Man, that is a class so many drummers wish they could have attended. It truly hurts to realize he's not with us anymore. Imagine how he would teach a drumeo class, he would love it. Rest in peace Jeff, we really miss you.
*i envy you, i would have wanted to meet jeff porcaro myself. you can't imitate the groove from him. What has become of you musically. have you developed further or have you stopped playing the drums? Greetings from Germany from the beautiful city of Cologne*
I'm not a drummer, but a pianist who also plays bass occasionally. Jeff Porcaro is a drummer and man whom I highly regard as being quite possibly the greatest drummer of all time and definitely the one I respect the most. Let him never be forgotten, and studied hundreds of years from now. He left us way too early, but also left a lot to be appreciated.
Something about those California dudes just so freaking cool. Jeff was a leather jacket wearing, coke bottle cap glasses donning, coolest cat to maneuver a set of drums and cymbals. Just incredible at such a young age. Super tasty.
This video is a rare gem, a chance to peak into the mind of a genius. See how easy it was for Jeff to play anything he heard with such finesse? Noone has even been able to do it the way he could. That's why there was only one Jeff Porcaro. ❤
Jeff was a technical genius, not to mention ambidextrous, on writing drum parts. Or should I say percussion. He proved you don't have to do drum solos to be the badass drummer that he was.
It warms, and breaks my drumming heart to see this! What I would give to have been there at P.I.T. in that classroom! I strive to be the type of musician Jeff was! RIP Brother!
I love how Jeff gives due respect to Purdie and Bonham for the shuffle beat influence in "Rosanna." While we all appreciate your humility and respect for other great drummers, Jeff, you owned that shuffle beat. So in the pocket. That beat was yours and will always be remembered as your beat. RIP.
What's amazing is how much of his sound comes from his hands because hes making that acoustic drum set sounds so good with no Mike's and no recording studio
Lol at the "so why don't you practice?" question. Jeff laughs... He doesn't need to. But he's humble and also wants to encourage the students to practice, so he says he should practice more.
This guy truly is magical. Jeff is one amazing drummer. Rest his soul man. I used to play drums, but I kinda went on to do the chour. Just cause it was something new. But I'll never forget who he was.
Always so humble! He said his time sucked in a 1983 Modern Drummer interview...if I had HALF of this guy's skill and talent, I'd die a happy man (and I'm not even a drummer or musician for that matter).
@@IronMan-tk8uc *i started playing the drums , if i had 1/4 of his talent i would be the biggest mother fucker on the planet . i love this groove . Greetings from Germany - Cologne*
His humility was legendary. The young guys in the class don't quite seem to realize he's just being humble. The Prof should've reminded the kids of this and how incredible Jeff's skills are and how iconic his work catalogue is.
@@wolflover789 mushanga groove is insane not to mention how hard it is to master ghost notes inside a shuffle groove especially on the 16th note following the 3rd beat that takes special amount of time to hone a skill your brain has like mental block in it to fight passed
He makes it look so easy too bad he was taken away so young. Can you imagine how much better he would have gotten had he lived to Buddy Rich's age? I remember him saying in one interview that he never played a drum solo in concert because he felt his job was just to keep time and stay out of the way. Kind of the same philosophy of Bernard Purdie who Jeff learned a lot from when he was a kid. And to think that I grew up just a few years behind him within about 10-15 miles of all the Toto members. Thanks for posting.
I love music, and I've enjoyed playing in bands the last 30 years, but man, I wish I would have had the focus and dedication and the "right place - right time" situation, like Porcaro, Lukather, and countless others had. RIP Jeff!
that's funny to me because I'm a drummer at heart but play guitar. and I'm not a big fan of the instrument. I'm always digging on the drum, bass, piano. but recently I've realized my two favorite guitarists that i can listen to all day are Angus Young and James Burton. But thx for pointing that out. cuz it's true.
@@mifolfree6683 You picked a great instrument. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. I always wanted to play guitar but play drums, piano, and recently started learning bass. Guitar is great especially if you have good rhythm you can do anything with it.
How have you been sitting on this video for so long, and dear God brother....where's the rest? This was 10 years before I was at MI, but it still brings back some memories. Thanks so much for posting.
Musician's Institute PIT '87-88. I was in the classroom lol - what fun!
Nice to 👂👍🤗

That’s awesome! Must be great to have a recording of it to watch now. That’s what I love about YT; you can find all kinds of retro stuff.

Porcaro or Phillips? I got my pick.
He was so humble.
How can you not love Jeff Porcaro?

True monster of the art of playing drums. His time and that laid back feel? Second to none.
RIP Jeff Porcaro your drumming is legendary! 🙏
He seemed like the most humble guy ever. What an incredible drummer and person!

Showing the audience the Mushanga beat. Brilliant.
His brilliance is mindblowing and he is such a nice guy. RIP Jeff Porcaro. 💐❤

That snare sounds so monstrous!!
He was one of the very few drummers in history to make the drums sound great without being mixed.
Ci manchi tanto Jeff!! Grazie per quello che ci hai lasciato
What's amazing is how much of his sound comes from his hands because hes making that acoustic drum set sounds so good with no Mike's and no recording studio
That's a definite. And that's true for all pro musicians a fairly large amount of their sound IS their hands.
Jeff , my hero 💔🙏🕯I miss you

Jeff Porcaro The Best in the world 🌹
I just LOVE the big grin he gets every time he starts playing the rumba beat!
That rythm-beat is monstrous..wow

What’s the “chour?”
I love Jeff Porcaro so much.....💜
Time Vault. Jeff had a solid groove that just flowed. R.I.P you are missed Jeff.
One of the greatest! RIP Jeff ❤
So tasteful, most musical drummer ever.
The way he's able to get the drums to sound on a camcorder microphone is incredible.
Uno dei pochi che ha fatto la storia della batteria
This is just so fantastic, what a damn shame he passed. Just has an undeniable sound and pinpoint groove he can apply to anything.
It’s funny to hear Jeff say he is frustrated because his skills are very limited. Lol. I would take his skills any day!

Awesome video - Jeff was a special human.
this is great, the master talking about his signature sound. thanks for posting.

Funny he said I'm not that crazy about drums in particular you know what I mean I'm not not a drum fanatic. Now that's rock and roll.

I think that's why he loved being in Toto. He got to write and create, as well as play his instrument. He always played for the songs, not himself.
Thanx so much!!!
Such a lovely feel - Such a unique talent he had that was appreciated by everyone around him

Mushanga! Great!
One of the very very grooviest guys to ever pick up a pair of sticks.
He sits super low. It was a custom back in 80-90s.
👍‼️

Sayyyy whaaaat!??? He didn’t practice? No drum set at home? Holy cow can u imagine if he did practice??? 😮
