      @@lok0br Steve Wozniak was very focused on support, compatibility and upgradability. He would've open-sourced the company if he could, but Jobs was business first and throughout his life he pushed his company and ideas forward, but it means rapid succession and obsolescence of products. The first iPad was killed after just 2 years, the last PowerBook G4 was still being produced despite being obsoleted 2 years later in 2008.

      Not really.
      The Apple 2 saved programs to audio cassette tape. Audio cassette tapes recorded audio sound between approximately 20Hz to 18KHz.
      The data the Apple 2 recorded to the tape consisted of tones of two frequencies, if I recall. Short duration tones.
      So almost anything that can record audio and play it back can act as a storage device for the Apple 2.

      The c64 tape drive (datasette) is digital and uses a proprietary connector. So you’d need an 3.5mm breakout board or something like a Tapuino, an arduino based tape drive emulator, kind of like the sd2iec but for tape.

    • @ashtonsretrocomputerroom
      @ashtonsretrocomputerroom  6 месяцев назад +1

      The C64 datasette is digital so, you would have to use one of those tape to 3.5mm “car stereo” adapters. There are also digital to analog converters or other arduino based tape drive emulators available.

    • @jimmyburke2611
      @jimmyburke2611 6 месяцев назад +2

      @@ashtonsretrocomputerroom I was thinking more of being able to play an audio file on my computer when plugged into a regular cassette recorder then be able to take that tape and put it in the datasette. Is that possible or does the datasette write to the tape in a way that a normal recorder can't?

    • @jimmyburke2611

      So basically the car adapter idea with more steps.

    • @ashtonsretrocomputerroom
      @ashtonsretrocomputerroom  6 месяцев назад +1

      @@jimmyburke2611The datasette connects to the c64 with a hard wired proprietary connector, where as computers like the Apple II use a standard off the shelf cassette player, because it has 3.5mm input/output.
