@eDuncan If I may share my experience - I've been vegan for almost 2 years now and have been grateful at every meal since then.
Every meal has been a conscious choice - one that divests from the direct exploitation of the other beings we share the earth with, as well as significantly reducing the strain that I am placing on the earth's systems.
I'd check out the film Earthlings to see just how bad the dairy/egg industry is. After that, the transition period can be just a few weeks, while you find alternatives to your day to day consumption.
Being vegan has never been easier.
      Best of luck!
Edit: Also the dairy industry IS the meat industry. Cows don't get sent off to retirement homes when their milk production drops after a few years or if they are born male...

Someone needs to edit the Wikipedia pages for Chicken Run and Dawn of the Nugget to include at least a short write-up of your videos. I was reading them to find out if they'd actively declined to have Mel Gibson reprise his role, of if they'd asked and he refused. Thankfully, it seems they didn't ask him, though there was some small controversy surrounding the recasting of Ginger's voice.

I really loved how Nick and Fetcher continued their growth in the sequel. They're portrayed in the first movie as not caring at all about the oppressor's rules, but being individualistic and self-serving in trying to survive under them. The way they find their own liberation in joining the flock is built on nicely by how willing they are to put themselves in danger for Molly, there's a strong message there about the importance of connection and making decisions that benefit future generations. Loved it.

I think I also need to re-read Brave New World at some point (along with a lot of other books from high school english). If I recall correctly, the theme of family abolition was also present as one of the anxieties of the time that Brave New World came out, as it featured a very dystopian take on the concept. But I guess that kind of shows how family abolition isn't really possible under a capitalist system because in the Year of Our Ford (or whatever they called it sorry it's been over 10 years) the only alternative to a nuclear family is infants who are produced and programmed in a factory to be Good Workers.

Chicken Run 2 is a great addition to the series, and a very vital and timely exploration of the politburo debates on revolutionary strategy of the mid 1920s between the left faction around Trotsky and the prevailing tendency within the Soviet leadership as articulated by Joseph Stalin. It is, in essence, Chicken socialism in one chicken country Vs Chicken Proletarian Socialist Internationalism. This is the central theme and driver of the main character arc of the protagonists. Of course the debate plays out differently to real life in that it's framed as a generational conflict (not that I minded, a gentle critique of the tendency is some established revolutionary situations towards ossification and revisionism) and also the correct line actually wins this time.
There's also some nice stuff in there once they get to the factory about ideology and false consciousness that seems to take a leaf from the Frankfurt School.
I also don't hate that they replaced Mel Gibson because ffffffffff.....

I think the creators of CR recognised that the ending of the movie presented a dangerous isolationist fantasy and sought to rectify it via the sequel. A small utopian communist haven isolated from the outside world is a fantasy many leftists turn to when they get overwhelmed by the oppressive force of capitalism, or don't have sufficient imagination to dream of global revolution. You can see this in cottagecore, some self sufficient living communities, eco villages, communes, etc. so many people I know (me included) have said "my dream is to live in a commune with my friends, somewhere close to nature". The dawn of the nugget says NO. That's not enough. You living a happy stress free life in a small isolated community is not a revolution. We need to work together to liberate everyone.

I think it’s open ended, imo the first movie is the liberation of the immediate community and the second is national liberation. Ginger saying it’s just the beginning at the end of the movie means either possibility (anarchist or communist, or both) is likely, with regards to the exportation of the revolution (international liberation). We won’t know unless there’s a third movie, which I wish I could help write cuz I have so many ideas 👀

  • @sammosaurusrex

Here is my critique of this communist masterpiece:
First of all, I read the romanticized vision of Ginger as revolutionary hero as totally sincere. That is, I did not see it as Rocky telling the audience a knowingly romanticized version of the story, but as the filmmakers themselves establishing for an audience who may not have seen the original movie what they thought its point was. This opening was not a conscious critique of "Socialism in One Country" or naive dictatorship and cults of personality, but a sincere misunderstanding of the point of the original film. In reality, it was not that Ginger rescued the chickens from slavery, but Ginger who served as a true leader by showing Chickens how to forge solidarity, cooperate and lean on each other for survival in such brutal conditions. This misunderstanding is further compounded by the genuine reverence and authority Ginger seems to have over the chickens: She truly rules by unquestioned diktat. Gone is the management of humans' natural inclination towards conservatism and sticking to "the devil you know," no longer is Ginger the most respected figure of a community (first among equals if you will)--Ginger now literally dictates policy to the masses. If Ginger says we hide, we hide.
It is this shift away from collective action and forging of solidarity, and towards revolution as something enacted by an elite cadre of skilled individuals, that is my chief problem with the movie.
Molly, then, is not portrayed in the movie as the standard bearer of revolution. Rather, she is portrayed as youthful and naive, and the film consciously admonishes Ginger for wanting to shelter her from the world, because by refusing to show her the dangers of Liberalism (which, in the text of the film, is simply the danger of being eaten), she naively walks into the new security state.
I also did not like the depiction of surveillance capitalism and consumerism, because the movie did not actually critique it. In the movie, the problem with surveillance capitalism is not that chickens are given apparent freedom with strict limits, and policed if they cross invisible lines within those freedoms (as it is in reality). Far from it: The chickens are literally hypnotized by magic technology and watched by the equivalent of the personal NSA agent meme. The problem with such critiques of things which are not actually happening is that far from attacking real systems of power, they create fantasy worlds in which bad guys do overwhelmingly evil things. There is no tension of the chickens who say "but we've always laid eggs, why should we change" as there was in the first movie, and as our modern day systems of consumption really work. The chickens have been literally fully deprived of their agency. The movie in using this plot device is falsely setting the limits of when revolution is justified: "When capitalists behave so evil as to literally control your brain with collars, then rebellion is appropriate."
And the movies final issue (and cardinal sin), I would summarize as: They do not build the plane. Think about that collective action of building the plane in the original movie, the thrill of clandestine solidarity, of workers coming together to snatch the freedom that is their right from under the boss' nose. How does that work out in Rise of the Nugget? The vanguard of five or so chickens break in and singlehandedly fix the problem. Then Ginger gives a rousing speech summarizing the new party tenets, and everyone claps. Who could ever believe something so phony? What's more, this is a direct echo of what the movie told us was Ginger's role in the beginning: Ginger is the hero, the visionary leader, the bravest chicken there ever was. Ginger and her care for chickenkind are what matters. Other chickens barely factor in at all. This is not a story of collective action and solidarity, but uniquely skilled heroes who have risen to the top of a heirarchy and dictate the future according to their personal will. I can't think of anything that offends my sensibilities more.
And yes, the characters were flanderized, and I have no idea where they got the catch phrase of "cock a doodle doo" from, I don't recall that one being in the original. It felt like a cynical set-up for franchising, gross capitalist exploitation of people's memory of the original. I did not like it.

and to think we almost kill close to 100bil/year a uncountable amount of chickens for a commodity we don't even need that being eggs and meat.
if you ever met a cat or a dog you know they are someone. they have a personality. same with the animals used to create products that some may partake in out of a choice.
everything is a choice but that does not mean a choice is a good one. especially if it involves a victim, is unquestioned, learned at a young age.
if you give a fluffy bunny to a kid and the kid enjoys torturing and killing the bunny you would think the kid needs help.
when people work their life in a death factory that causes mental anguish and leads to ptsd you have the option to make a choice. do you believe your taste buds are worth more than the lifes of countless individuals.
we can't have a just world when we blindly standby injustice. follow your heart. my most loved trait in many humans is their ability for empathy and compassion. but we also have a problem with greed. don't let greed win over compassion for others

    1. Frizzle? Like Miss Frizzle of the Magic School Bus, portrayed by queer icon Lily Tomlin? I'm not sure those are undertones
    2. Mrs. Tweedy survived?!
    3. The chosen chicken is 314, and there's a pi(e) joke in there somewhere.

The dainty flutter of a single chicken‘s wings becomes the mighty swing of revolution once all their voices cluck in solidarity.
Although I‘d argue this film falls pray to great hen mother history theory a bit by placing ginger‘s character arc as so central to the revolution, it kinda leaves the rest of the chickens as a collective in solidarity by the wayside.
Which is why I think the opening of her as the big hero in Rocky’s retelling is presented without criticism. But that is more down to the structure of a move focusing in character relationshios rather than any ideological position - a reminder that the medium of a story fundamentally shapes it. There‘s no way to make a sequel to a movie with both returning and new main characters without overinflating the importance of the returning ones in the original story, I think.

Honestly, your Chicken Run video was convincing enough that I spent the whole of Dawn of the Nugget sitting there like 'Is this communist enough?'. I think I landed on about half the points (I'm not as familiar with 60s media so I was using the trope of story telling/history from your first video and comparisons to Hilda [a similar plot with the actress who plays Molly] to track the scepticism of the nuclear family) so this was a really good build on both my understanding of global revolutionary art, and my understanding of Chickens.
