time for another friendly neighborhood hawaiian tour guide commentary! hot spots and insider information, GO! 0:34 teddy's is good. minah went to the one next to the zoo on the southern end of waikiki. this is where i rant about how expensive and stupid waikiki is and encourage you to eat somewhere else. but teddy's is one of the places i think is worth the price. i'm not sure they sell dave's ice cream at that location, but it's been a long time since i've been there and it has been renovated since then so maybe. if so, it's even more worth going there! 0:47 never been to CIP because i don't like the location. it's at the corner of a condo, right on a very busy sidewalk and an extremely noisy road, and there's no parking. the place is always packed, so people must not mind the location or the price, but i'll trust minah's assessment on this one. 0:58 i don't know why in god's name people eat at mcd's but for the convenience. i guess it's a travel thing. it's known for having various menus all over the world. not sure if the ones in korea are any different from here. if you must know, our mcd's menu is the same as in the states, except for a couple of breakfast items. oh and in addition to the apple pie, we have the haupia pie (haupia is a coconut custard, that is sometimes served as a gelatin) and the baked sweet taro pie. 1:15 refer to minah's previous hawaii vlog for my info on leonard's bakery and satellite trucks. in short it's a winner, and something you must have if you're ever here👍 1:25 the acai in the cup is from island vintage coffee shop on kalakaua ave. in waikiki, the second is from jamba juice. never thought jamba was special but minah seems to love it! 1:52 that looks like it's from hula grill (at the outrigger hotel) but if not you can get that kind of food from anywhere that serves breakfast. except mcdonald's. 2:00 stuff you can get from any 7-eleven (two locations in waikiki) or ABC store (a gajillion locations in waikiki). i don't like getting food from those places because they're overpriced. that papaya container was probably like $5 and that sandwich was like $4 #notworthit ********all the locations so far, except the leonard's truck, are located in waikiki. the next few places are on the north shore******** 2:16 i wouldn't think an actual korean would even like our take on kbbq but minah think's it's great! the ribs look dry af but the shrimp looks perfect. those plates are like 40% cabbage and rice, and that's just how we eat here. if you're ever wondering why hawaiians are so big, now you know🤣 2:25 at shark's cove, in a town called pupukea, up the road from the famous waimea bay. across the street is an open lot with a bunch of great food trucks, where minah got the kbbq. my favorite truck over there is the pizza one, but all of them are good. 2:29 you can find people selling stuff out of their truck/van on the side of the road all over the island, particularly near the beach. most sell coconuts, fruits, pickled veggies (yum!), smoothies, and pasteles (similar to tamales) and fish. roadside vendors tend to be very friendly, but would rather you not haggle. 2:36 this is what shark's cove looks like. there aren't actually sharks there, it's too shallow and sharks hate people. there are lots of fish though, which makes it a perfect snorkeling spot. most tourists don't want to venture this far away from waikiki (it's like an hour away) but those who do are rewarded with one of the best snorkeling spots on the island. it's better to go at high tide, for obvious reasons. the rock enclosure protects from most waves, but in the winter the waves are bigger, so caution is a must. 2:41 sea turtles in hawaii are a protected species, and law prohibits getting within 10ft of one without a permit (mostly granted to researchers and conservationists). that selfie you want so bad can get you fined. which you'd deserve because only a douche bag would bother turtles. minah is the proper distance away👍 3:32 malama market in the historic town of haleiwa (20 minutes west of shark's cove) i can personally vouch for the triple layer princess cake. it's expensive but INCREDIBLE. 3:36 ********the vlog says waikiki beach but we're still no the north shore******** 3:41 north shore marketplace in haleiwa. ton of great eateries. haleiwa is a strange place. it has an old-time small town feel because the architecture is still vintage. but everything on the main road through town is just shops and restaurants. it's basically a giant shopping center. we call it the waikiki of the north, with the main difference being it's much smaller and old looking and doesn't have all the high end shops waikiki has. PEDESTRIANS ARE A PROBLEM. there aren't many cross walks, and the road isn't very wide, so people cross just anywhere. some of them take their time too. so if you're driving, stay ultra alert. if you yourself are a pedestrian, have some common sense so you don't end up on the news. 3:51 every one of the hawaiian islands is crawling with stray chickens. our ancestors brought them here during the time of the voyagers (moana had the dumb one in the movie). when tourists ask about the strays, we tell them the chickens all descend from a single chicken coop that was knocked over during a hurricane in the 80's. they believe us😆 anyway, health authorities advise not to eat stray chickens or their eggs. they're not sanitary, they aren't immunized, and their meat is supposedly too tough for consumption. they're not the same breed you see in the super market. 4:04 people think "aloha" means hello and goodbye. while it can be used as a greeting or parting, the word "aloha" is a broad term that encompasses the idea of fundamental respect, love and peace toward all people and all things, an idea we in the islands are raised with and try to live by. when used as a greeting or fare well, you're bidding them peace and good will. as for the shaka (this thing 🤙) it's meant as an informal symbol of the aloha spirit. it's mostly used to greet/acknowledge someone from a distance (it's weird to do it up close) or to bid farewell to someone. in the post-war era, surfers coined the term "hang loose🤙" to embody the laid back lifestyle of pacific islanders. the shaka did not originate in hawaii but is most associated with islanders. pt. 2 below
commentary pt. 2 ********NOWWW we're back in waikiki******** 4:15 refer to minah's previous hawaii vlog for more about the musubi. i personally wouldn't pay more than $1.50 for a decent one, and the best places to get them are mom n pop stores or 7-eleven. minah chose musubi cafe iyasume (at the shirokiya food court in ala moana shopping center). they look great, if you don't mind the price. 4:21 i hope minah enjoyed her beer. not sure if she's drinking primo or if it's just served in a primo cup. i personally do not recommend primo as a brand, but at shirokiya during happy hour, beer is $1. i'll drink mediocre beer for $1🤣 4:32 ala moana beach park, across the street from the shopping center. it's a nice place for a stroll after dark. with a friend of course. i'm a pretty big dude and even i would prefer to have some company 4:52 "social media seriously harms your mental health"😆 5:05 i have a hard time hating on cheesecake factory because their stuff is amazing. i just can't stand the price. 5:08 her figure looks amazing considering that by this point in the vlog, she's already eaten more than she did during her entire career at DreamT😆 5:14 note: a lot of places in waikiki have signs printed in both english and japanese. japanese people are the majority of the foreign tourist population in waikiki, due mostly to geographic proximity and the strength of the yen in the US. cultural and family ties dating back to the 1800's also contribute to hawaii's popularity in japan. 5:18 liliha bakery is a favorite among locals. i used to go there for breakfast before school, back when it only had one location. that's the one minah visited :) most visitors didn't know about liliha bakery before yelp came along. now it's so popular they've opened two more locations, closer to tourist spots, and all are lovely. there are a lot of good bake shops on this island. 5:26 if you don't love fat boy ice cream sandwiches, you can't be friends with minah 5:37 never had haags before. i just don't think ice cream should cost more than dinner. that's just me though. tons of other good places to get ice cream for less. 6:00 the performer on this street corner draws a big crowd every night around dinner time. on the weekend there are about 3-4 other performers along that main blvd (kalakaua ave. in waikiki), as well as some street picassos and some asshole with a giant parrot on his shoulder and charges you money to hold his bird. 6:14 there are a gajillion kbbq restaurants in town. i've eaten at about a dozen of them and loved em all. i really don't think there's a such thing as bad korean food. 7:08 DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE 7:15 this place is called buho cocina y cantina, rooftop restaurant and bar at waikiki shopping plaza. pretty chill, nice view (if you don't mind the noise) 7:28 yassing at kelley o'niell's irish bar on lewers street (one block away from her previous location). live music, cheap drinks. 7:30 one of the hot dog vendors outside of kelley's. there's another one across the street at moose mcgillycuddy's. both are great. and by all means, load it up, but do not get in the goddamned uber with your messy hot dog. eat it first, clean up, THEN get in the uber. trust me on this. 8:24 a bit of warning for tourists: that part of lewers street, between kelley's and moose's, is not a wise place to hang out after dark, even with a friend. that place is notorious for bad things. fights and pick pocketing are pretty common. prostitution and drug dealing are also done rather freely there. on any given night you could get your drink spiked. worst case scenario you get lured away by a sweet talker and end up god-knows-where. that's what i thought of when minah was approached by that guy. i don't mean to profile the gentleman or suggest he's nefarious, but those are the expectations on lewers street. park your car in front of the bar and observe for yourself if you don't believe me. in fact, after a certain hour on most nights, cops will actually station themselves there to be on hand when something happens. that spot is a toxic mix of locals, military, visitors, students, runaways and alcohol. i wish minah had someone to warn her of this, and i'm relieved nothing happened. most people go there without a problem, but the possibility of something happening just isn't worth it. there are other places in waikiki to hang out, you don't need lewers street. also, don't go to the playbar either (two blocks away at the kuhio banyan club). it's similarly notorious, just slightly less obvious, with a less diverse crowd and slightly more guns👎 8:40 please for the love of god, eat before you get to the airport. or pack some snacks. don't pay half a month's rent for ice cream or a sandwich. it's criminal. 8:52 so now we know why minah was here. it's wedding season. getting married in hawaii is incredibly expensive. it's hard to book a chapel or ballroom from january to august, and if you do it costs a fortune. a lot of people just get married in their home country and come here for their honeymoon and/or photoshoot. every day in waikiki you'll see couples wandering the sidewalks or beaches followed by their photographer. one of the cutest shots i've ever seen was at the busy intersection on kalakaua ave and seaside ave. when the lights turned red, before the pedestrian signal, a couple rushed into the intersection ahead of the crowd and snapped two poses, to the cheers of fellow pedestrians 8:56 this is one of the most instagrammable spots in waikiki. it's the lane between cheesecake factory and the outrigger hotel, on the way to waikiki beach 9:10 hibiscus, the representative flower of the state of hawaii (the actual state flower is yellow) sooooooooooooooo thanks for reading all that. didn't know it was gonna be that much lol. hope you enjoyed reading this. it took several hours to write because i lost it near the end and had to start over🤣 this is most likely minah's last vlog in hawaii, but you can also catch my tour guide commentary on other idol vlogs from the island of oahu, including: - fx amber's ranting monkey EP11 from the SM conference in 2016 (i forgot to do one for luna's alphabet from that conference. i'll do it sometime) - fx luna's vlogs from her vacation here in april 2019 - akmu suhyun's travel vlog from july - ladies code's sojung's vlogs from august (her and ashley performed at the annual korean festival) - all of twice's videos ("nayeon in hawaii" pts 1-3, as well as "jayeon" pts 1-5 with sana and momo) when they were here late last fall and coming soon: gsd hyeri's hawaii vlog!
Excellent video👍 Many people think that Hawaiian food is just a selection of foods from the heritage of the islands' natives (Polynesian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, U.S. Military). While that is certainly the case, these groups have been together for so long there that many innovative fusion foods have been developed.
I miss you minah and I love you ♥️. new fan here from the Philippines 🇵🇭 I'll support you forever. Saranghae ♥️. I watch absolute boyfriend to become a fan of you ☺️♥️.

3:32 malama market in the historic town of haleiwa (20 minutes west of shark's cove) i can personally vouch for the triple layer princess cake. it's expensive but INCREDIBLE.
