they also promote some real shit things about beauty too, like "glasses are ugly" and "body hair is disgusting on women" when in reality both are perfectly fine and normal looking things. some people actually look better with glasses! body hair is a personal preference thing though, it's not ugly just some people prefer none while others don't care, and some seek it out exclusively in a partner.
also, you're absolutely not reading into it too much at all. it's the most obvious message anyone gets from these things.

i'm an animal lover, i love animals more than people, so seeing animal abuse, even fake animal abuse, upsets me.
i'm also extremely empathetic, when i see someone being sad, hurt, abused or just generally experiencing any form of misery, i instantly get emotional, even if that someone is a cartoon dragon.
and every now and then, this ad will pop up in my head, and even as a memory, the ad still crushes me and makes me cry.
