  • Does your rear power liftgate only open a little bit and then close? After watching other people having the same issues on RUclips, I decide to make a video myself of me changing out the rear lift supports that help lift the rear tailgate door on my 2010 GMC Yukon. In the video I noticed the lighting was kind of bad when removing the clips to remove the lift support (sorry about that). I just used a small flat blade screwdriver to pry off the metal clips....super easy. The first one I did off camera and recorded doing the second one.
This whole job took less than 5 minutes in total to replace both supports!
I used ACDelco 510-1245 Professional Rear Compartment Lift Support.
    Chevrolet Tahoe/ Suburban - 2007-2014
    GMC Yukon/ Yukon Denali - 2007-2012
    Cadillac Escalade - 2007-2012
There are many others to choose from, I just chose this one.
Here's the link where I purchased mine from -

    Thank you for watching!!

My problem is I think the previous owner didn't do this fix and now I think the motor is slipping, only goes about a quarter open then grinds unless I help it open, so not only do I need a new cheaper lift supports, but probably also a new lift motor assembly. Great!

What if it’s it’s not the struts? I say this because I had to put a toy back there and it didn’t fit and I hit the button and it went down it closed and then from there it would not open or close when I hit the button or the remote key?

Hi William…….hmmmm…..this might be a long shot, did you try sitting in the drivers seat and use the rear hatch opening button located just above your head where they garage door opener switches are? That switch can also lock out the tailgate from opening.

Nay.....not sure if you tried this yet.....but, above the dome lights which is just above the rear view mirror, there is a few rocker style switches.....usually the one on the far right is the switch to open the rear tailgate. If that is in the off position , your tailgate will not function. On the bottom of that switch it says OFF, on the top of that switch it shows the rear hatch opening .......try pushing on the switch to open the rear tailgate.

my wife came back from getting hay for our fall decorations and says, "somethings wrong with the rear gate". did the exact thing yours did in the beginning of the video. She wasn't happy I blamed her for breaking it; "was it broken when you left?" "no" "is it broken now?" "i guess" "well, it seems to me that you broke it" lol
got some new struts from rockauto for less than 20$ total. easy peasy. thanks for the video.

Thanks... easy fix, but I had to have someone lift the gate and I had to release the hinges about a quarter of an inch to open the gate wide enough to get the new ones on.

John.....Yes, I had to do the same thing also. I had my wife pushing up on the tailgate just enough so I could install the struts.
Glad it worked out for you! 🙂

I had to push like hell on mine. I had my dad hold the gate up the lort one came off easy but once I put the new one on the right one was hard to get off. I had to push the gate up a little more to get it to pop.
