I used to make music cassette tapes for my cousin the world renowned folk musician Doc Watson and he would trade me some of his albums. I recorded all kinds of music but the Songs of Harold Arlen were his favorite. I forgot who was singing them but no one is better than Ella!
Barry - Your cousin, Doc Watson, as you know better then I, one of the 20th century's most influential, brilliant and important musicians, and one of my top ten favourite artists in any genre, RIP Doc! Peace Barry - Gus from England ;)
This one is very hard to find. I have all the other Ella Fitzgerald songbooks, but I've almost never seen this one on vinyl, and it's also apparently out of print on CD. So I guess I don't feel too guilty at all, listening to it here.
Esta maravillosa mujer era un Ángel cantando, nos dejó su vida y obra en el jazz y su magistral impertretacion. Dios te bendiga donde estés Ella Fitzgerald.
Martin Williams wrote in The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz (Rev. 1987) that " from among the 'song book' series the Harold Arlen album can be particularly recommended". (p. 56). Do you agree?
My introduction to a lot of these songs was probably 1940's Warner Brothers Cartoons back in the 1970's. Those Warner's guy's must've been pretty big fan's of Arlen.
Wonderful posts of Ellas songbook. Good quality, too. One suggestion though. Upgrade the turntable on your video! . its a really Cheap Crosby/ Vicrtolla type Chinese turntable. This makes these beautiful songs look cheap. May i suggest a 70/80s name brand table with a S shaped Yone arm, removable headshell, etc , like a Technics or Pioneer. Better yet, a vid od an old Console Cobra matic from the1950s. Cheap turntables like the one pictured will actually destroy records , s shouldnt be advertised.
Una voz celestial de esta gran cantante afrodescendiente en haber legado a la posteridad. Todo un icono de una era dorada en seguir cautivando por siempre.

The gold standard among female vocalists.
Ella Fitzgerald is simply wonderful.
I’m happy any time I get to hear the intro verse to Over the Rainbow. Si pretty. Harold Arlen is one of my favorite composers.

saw your cousin perform in 2007 at the hardly strictly bluegrass festival, he is sorely missed just like queen ella

Music for the soul. It doesn’t get much better than this
Ella es numero uno. Ella is the best.
Ella has always been great since the beginning of her career. This is incredible. I am a Brazilian, I live in Brazil and I admire Ella a lot.
Every time I hear that clear as a bell voice I think of the old Memorex tape commercials... is it live or is it Memorex
Such an amazing voice, terrific range!!
She had perfect pitch.

I have a copy, If I recall it's a 2 or 3 record set
Totally awesome.

If you came looking for a little real magic in your lives, this is the right place!
"Out of this world" kinda sounds like a James Bond theme, with that specific bass progression.

Wonder what songs or music Ella loved to listen to ?
❤️
I DIDN’T EVEN KNOW ABOUT THIS
Same here! I grew up on the Gershwin and Cole Porter songbooks but this is new to me!
She's done many songbooks each worth their weight in pure Gold for the ears.
