  • I picked up a new luxury tool. Something that'll get used on every hand tool project. And it wasn't THAT much. Initial unboxing had me excited. It's not perfect but it does offer abilities others lack. Made in the US by a great boutique tool maker.
Note: I paid full price for this. I wasn't asked to make this video. I get nothing for it's creation. No kickback if you buy one yourself. It's just a cool tool and I thought I'd share.

The daily driver marking knife has its place on the workbench because it's always being used. That making knife is something that fits naturally in the hand, registers against your palm and fingers, and just feels like an extension of your body.

You are one of the most genuine guys i follow and truly exceptional craftsman and teacher. I wish you all the happiness that all Ferraris and Lamborghinis put together will struggle to bring. God bless and hope i learn from you more,

Not a big project (but some fun) to get some flat stock and make a version of this that has the tweaks to the design you mention and have exactly what you want.

Nice piece of steel with how many hours of labor invested.... things that look simple are often the hardest to make. How much is your time and expertise worth in what you do? I know my local mechanic charges more than this per hour.

9:25 did not know that... Thanks for showing! (I have missed the video where you showed that - or forgot).
Congrats on the new tool! Nice things make our live more enjoyable. And I don't think it's a luxury tool if you use it for basically all joinery. Enjoy it!

Based on your last video on this subject, I bought a thick blade Narex. I'm much happier with this design than any other marking knife.

Those marking knives you don't use - a simple fix is to attach a wood handle to them with thru pins to hold everything in place (besides epoxy).
Simple fix and makes them useful (again).

Luthier products from StewMac are aimed at pros and people who want the best. People complain about their prices, too. Hobbyists like me don't need this level of quality, but the video showed me how bad my current marking knife is. :) Time to upgrade, if only a little.

Matt Estlea marking knives are 70-95£ so I would say yours you bought is about spot on for a premium marking knife. Now I could never spend that, but it's not my profession or serious hobby (yet)
