How to setup the Korg NanoKontrol 2 in Logic Pro X for Full DAW and Midi CC Control

- At the beginning I had quite some problems setting up the Korg NanoKontrol 2 in Logic Pro X the way I wanted it to work: as full DAW control (Play, Stop, Record, Next-Previous Track) and as CC control (Modulation, Expression, Vibrato....). Now I finally found out and just wanted to share with you. At the end it was way easier than I thought.
Hope it helps, and if it does, please subscribe to my channel, I'll make more of these in the future :)

Martin and Nathan Jones, I came across your RUclips video and only NOW do I understand how to get a hybrid of controlling the instruments via the sliders(11,1,7 etc) and the stop, record rewind, next rack ,fast forward etc on the kontroller. Brilliant, thanks so much
Thanks Richard for your feedback. I'm always happy to hear if my videos helped and a big thanks to @Nathan Jones for his additional comments
your video helps, I bought one and returned it because I could not get it to work. Now I will buy it again. Thanks
you're welcome. I should ask Korg for a commission :)
Great video! Simple and concise, but definitely some fiddling things that myself and I'm sure many other users have missed! One thing I'd add is that in the Control Surfaces Setup window, under the New dropdown, you need to deselect 'Automaic Installation', otherwise every time you open Logic is will scan for new devices and add the nanoKontrol as a generic DAW controller, erasing all of your assignments in the Korg app. The Korg doesn't need to be added as a control surface in this dialogue at all, Logic just recognises its MIDI data. After I did this it worked a treat.
Hi Nathan, you're right. There are many of these small "fiddling" details that might come into play. Like mine once in a while adds new commands by itself. But at least, once you understood the basics you can resolve a lot of problems then fiddling in the right direction :)
Thanks, Martin, for the original post, and Nathan, for the additional comment. I followed Martin's instructions exactly, and still couldn't get it to work, but deselecting Automatic Installation, and then Scan All Models, set the nanoKontrol up just fine. Looking forward to using it in my projects!
Thanks Nathan, this had me pulling faces with frustration and this tip fixed it. And thanks Martin for the set up info!
Thanks dude! I was about to order this but I was hesitant, knowing the pain to come! This makes life so much easier.
Once the NanoKontrol works it saves you so much time....i really enjoy mine
You are the real MVP! Starting up from scratch in Logic Pro X here, I wanted my nanoKontrol2 to be a combo of play, stop, record AND expressions, not track volume and such for the sliders. I think the real problem here is that the nanoKontrol2 can be easily identified and installed in Logic Pro, but it doesn't really work (at least for me). Your video did an excellent job of showing exactly how to do this, making midi easy. I'd love to see how you make best use of the three marker buttons in Logic. Thank you once again, Martin!
Thank you for your kind words! Lately I use them for film scoring to place non rounded markers and jump between them :)
great! really helps!
Thank you! Glad it helps 😊
this was literally the only video i found that explained this correctly!! Thank you

Thanks!
Thank YOU! Hope it was helpful
Thanks so much Martin! I just placed an order for the NanoKontrol 2 because of your video. Using this video and the helpful comments (with your replies!) below, I'm hoping I can get it setup correctly with Logic Pro. I have a MIDI keyboard, but it doesn't have any faders, knobs, or anything. I'll let you know how setup goes when I receive it! Thanks very much.
Thank you for your nice words David. You'll see, this little beast is really handy
Thanks for the great video. I have been struggling with configuring the Korg myself, so I’m going to give this a shot. Very clear and very easy to follow, so I am hopeful that I will succeed following your directions. Stay tuned.

Great video, Martin - thank you so much. I almost sold my NanoKontrol 2 out of frustration but kept it after watching this video. It setup perfectly. I also decided to set the stop button to Capture Recording - that way I can just play rough ideas straight into Logic without getting Red Light Fever :) PS - your music is lovely. I subscribed.

Thank you really informative. It is probably not possible to keep separate layouts? For example the standard installation works nice for mixing whereas a setup like you show is preferable for composing. thanks
Thank you and as I know, you can't simply switch between those layouts, it's or....or
The problem at least in Logic is that if you want to use the Nano in Mixer mode and then for CC expression, dynamic etc you can’t switch from Logic, you have to do it in the Nano Editor.
Hi Nathan, thanks for the great tips. I followed the steps and it still works as volume faders on logic :( I use nano kontrol studio.
Dear Teasing. Probably you still have it as a "control surface" (I talk about this at the very beginning). Try to delete it there
Great video thank you
thank you. I will make more videos like this in the future :)
How can I assign selected track as number one...in nanoKontrol2 we have 8 nobs, I want if I selected track 6, then it become number 1 nob and all the track below becomes 2,3,4...8 ..I hope you got it, thanks.
Hey Malvin, I think that I understood your question, but I use the NanoKontrol only as a Midi CC Controller, don't know how to assign knobs to designated tracks. I hope the Korg support will be able to help you out

Hey thanks for the video. I just wanna point out that as of now, the Kong Kontrol Editor software isn’t compatible with macOS 10.14 or higher. So beware mac users who have the latest updates! Korg has yet to update their software to comply with Apple’s!
True, the Kontrol Editor behaves a little strange now, but should still do it's job. I have a more recent video and where still able to configure everything: ruclips.net/video/vY5Sdza_ec0/видео.html
@@MartinHeidenreichMusic The problem I found is that I can’t even open the software in the new macOS. I never had it before the update so I don’t think I can use it regardless
I really enjoyed your video. I am new to logic and I always wanted to be able to use my NanoKontrol studio this way. Could you explain how I might add the mute, solo, record and select per track buttons to all of this?
Hi Kevin, in Control Mode the Nano reacts like this, in CC Mode you might try to assign the buttons one by one. Never tried but it might work
@@MartinHeidenreichMusic could you tell me if there are CC values for the Track Solo, Track Mute, track Record and Track Select buttons?
@@kevingibbs7220 as I wrote before, never did it. Don't think that there are special cc values, if, you might find it in the assign commands menu, it's really vast
ruclips.net/video/pHHkb6SzXS4/видео.html Awesome explanation!
Thanks, very helpful video. I've successfully set up CCs on the faders and it works fine for Kontakt. However, I can't also set up Logic transport controls as you suggest. The assign window you show doesn't appear when I click Control Surfaces > Controller Assignment, just a much smaller window without the list of assign choices. Nanokontrol is in Assignable mode.
Hi Nick, it's easier than it seems: just go to the preferences, advanced tools and switch on "control surfaces". Then you will see the window that I show in my video. If you still have problems then just get back to me. If if should work then please just subscribe to my channel to don't miss other useful videos in the future :)
one has to do a video to conclude for for you: dont use the automatic feature hahah Thx! Man i bought this nano because FAd0 does nnot getactualized, i cant set Fad9, it is a total frustration! MY first cc. I liked very much how potent it looks. HOwever i settled for the nano control now and got very satisfied with the touch and the fact that it is really nano, having R,M,and S. But miss a bank change and key to 4 directions. It misses a master fader as well. FOr film composers it is great still, i can use it on my piano and still have scores and all the stuff next to it
Thank you Emanuel for your nice words. Happy if it helped. Personally I love my NanoKontrol, programmed some of the buttons to open various windows in Logic, soooo handy
@@MartinHeidenreichMusic i discoverd the cycle through windows recently, and it helped a lot resuming with one click . And is stupid, caused i knew there was something like this. . I use two screen sets, this button, and full screen, and collapsed view for midi,on stream deck. I have two displays but even i centralize in one and leave the other for plug in or espace. Now i am just tring to figure out how to use banks in this controller, i want it as cc and mixer.
Thanks so much for this explanation. I am trying to connect a Korg NanoKONTROL studio, and many of the same settings seem to work. I can't get the jog wheel on the studio to work however. I was wondering if you had any thoughts about what might be the correct settings? I tried class: Global parameter: Shuttle Speed (advice I picked up from a forum) but that doesn't work. I'd appreciate any thoughts you might have.
Sorry Peter, I only have the NanoKontrol2, not the Studio Version, so I can't really help you.
@@MartinHeidenreichMusic thanks!
Very helpfull video!
Can I write CC data in a existing miditrack in realtime?
Yes you can, at least in Logic. Just press record again an then perform expression and modulation or what ever midi cc you want to write.
Thanks for this. So, as I understand it I can have one midi keyboard (my Arturia) playing the sounds on, say, Alchemy, inside Logic, while the NanoKontrol simultaneously modifies the parameter knobs?
To make it short: yes 😊
@@MartinHeidenreichMusic Yeah thanks 😊
Hi Martin, Awesome video and just in time for my new NanoKontrol2. I've completed the steps so I can use the sliders for the automation parameters and the transport functions. Is there a way to program the Korg/Logic so I can use the other functions solo, mute, record etc in the mixer?
Hi Christian, thanks for watching :) I'm not 100% sure, but it should be possible. If you go to the control surface settings and then into learn mode there are thousands of commands that you can assign to each button that you press. Maybe by switching the various "classes" you might find what you are looking for. Good luck

Hello! I was trying several times to setup nanokontrol with logic pro x,... it's becoming a nightmare... I really don't know why isn't working!!!
I do all You are explaining in the video... if somebody had the same problem and finally discovered why, please tell me! many thanks!
Dear Susanna, if you move your faders, do you see something in the Event list?
@@MartinHeidenreichMusic nothing...
Pretty good, thanks. However, I want faders to control faders 1-8 in Logic, but I can't seem to make it work for some reason.
I guess you mean the faders 1-8 on the mixer? Then you need to exit Midi Mode and get into the control mode. In the manual you find How To switch modes
@@MartinHeidenreichMusic Yes, on the mixer. Thanks, will try that,
Hi, Martin. The nanoKontrol arrived yesterday. I set it up the way you said, and it works great. However, when I press the Record button (on the nano), the red light comes on. When I press the Stop button, the playhead in LP stops, but the nano Record light is still red. Is there a way to set it so that red button light goes off when you press the Stop button (as it does in LP)? Thanks!
Hi David, sorry, but I guess I can't help. On mine when I press "Rec" the red light flashes once but it doesn't stay on
You've got to set the nanokontrol up for 'LED through' mode.
I've done as you've suggested. CC#11 registers fine, however I can't get CC#1 to work. It seems CC#11 is controlling both the dynamic and expression modes in Kontakt. I realize this is not a help channel, but I must be missing something very basic.
Hi Steve, it is difficult for me to understand what might not be working, but it is nearly impossible that one fader sends multiple CC's. What does the event list say if you move the fader? Probably you find the answer there.
Hi! I have the same problem... CC 11 and the others fine. BUT CC 1 don't... Can you say how to fix it? thanks
I deleted everything then start from scratch and it just worked.

@@Iliorr Hi Xabier, maybe just try as Steve Febbraro did. For him it is working now
I would love to know what exactly that horn patch was, it sounded so good
Hi Jacob, definetly a great sound :) It's the 6 French Horns from Jaeger (Audio Imperia). One of my favourite libraries, not only for the loud and epic stuff just like I've shown in my Scorerelief 2021 entry

Question: I can setup a few like play, stop and volume for one fader but it does not let me set all values for the other sliders to the mixer and so forth. How would I do this to assign scenes and faders to individual mixer tracks for audio and MIDI?
sorry, as I know (but maybe that's just me) it's or a midi cc controller or a mixer controller. As I need only the midi cc part, it works just great for me
Martin, is it possible to hookup two NanoKontrols (or preferably one NanoKontrol and one nanoPad) with Logic Pro? Thanks.
Hi David, quite sure it works, but honestly I never tried
Thanks so much Martin! Do you know if it is possible to load different scenes in the same song?
First I'd like to use it as a MIDI controller for the automations (like in this video) but later, when I finished composing, as a typical mixer controller (volume, pan for 8 tracks).
Is there a trick for this? Thanks a lot!
Hi Corrado (sounds quite Italian) :) I don't think that there is a simple trick. You would need to record everything with the Nano as CC controller and then add it as control surface. But then you would need to cancel it again and start from scratch to use it again as a cc controller (I guess)
@@MartinHeidenreichMusic OK, thanks so much for your quick and kind reply! And... yes, it sounds Italian because I am :-) Peace in music.
@@CorradoRossiMusic Fun fact: Vivo in Italia da 20 anni :) Buon weekend
there's a plugin - as per my comments above - though it seems the scenes button doesn't work in Logic. I'll keep trying....

Hello and thank you so much for your video !!! Thank to you, i could install and use my nanokontroll2 to controll CC values on logic. But...I have another question : if i want to use the nanokontrol as a cc controller but for an instrument on a midi channel 2? How could i do? (for example : i got kontakt in it, with on channel one : violin sustain and channel 2 : violin tremolo... I'd like to be able to automate expression and dynamics on either of these channels)... Hum... Is it clear? Not sure...
(EDIT) i've found a way via changing "global midi channel" in korg kontrol editor. But do you know an easiest way? without changing/saving, etc in kontrol editor, maybe directly in logic or at least kontakt?
Dear Julzantoine, not sure what you mean. If I put to instruments in one instance of Kontakt and then change the channel in my track of logic, yes, I can hear the different instruments but the Nano works anyhow. Maybe because I keep it on global/all channels. So it works fine. Even if normally I use one instance of kontakt per track :) Hope this helps. If not, just let me know.
HI Martin, I followed what you did on the nano control but now I lost the sustain when I play the piano, sustain pedal don't work
.. Can you help me out?
Hi Stephen, can it be that you assigned midi cc64 (sustain) by mistake to one of the faders?
Amazing thanks a lot, but i have a problem. I want my nano control, to be used as it is, volume of the mixer and play stop, etc. and when i connect it to logic it function as a keyboard, i mean if i push play bottom, it sound a note and it doesnt play the playhead. Can you help me what can i do to use it as a normal mix controler?? thanks a lot

Hey seasonal greetings…Can you assign effects from logic?
I.e..so I can dub
Hi Louis, not sure what you mean with effects. If you go to the assign command page you see all the commands that can be mapped. If I remember well, nearly everything in Logic can be assigned
Hi Martin....Thank you for this! I'm about to order my NanoKontrol 2 and this info will be very useful. A question: Assigning "Vibrato" ? I'm looking at my list of CC numbers/functions and don't see it. It will be useful to have as many of Spitfire (and others) have a vibrato parameter. That aside, I'm assuming that, for example, Portamento amount CC #84 as well as any other CC commands can be set up exactly as you showed on this video. Any help greatly appreciated!
Hi Barry, thanks for your kind words. Vibrato is what makes many of Spitfire's libraries shine :) Easiest way: within the library just right click on the vibrato and choose "learn midi cc automation" and there you go. Normally I put it on the fourth fader, but obviously, that's up to you
I’m pretty sure vibe Brado is cc 21 in Spitfire. Try assigning that in your NanoKontrol. That’s what I’ve done and it works great.
Hi Martin, quick check before I go ahead and buy the Korg NanoKontrol2 - If you have ever used the Spitfire Orchestral samples or anything else, they have this really simple feature of right-click on the expression/dynamics/modulation/vibrato slider on the Logic Pro interface, say learn midi function and simply move any of the faders. Does this occur in the NanoKontrol as well? Also, how did you feel about the size? Was it too small? I can't seem to find an affordable 60 mm fader port to control Midi cc values like you explained. Any help will be appreciated!
Dear Sai, yes, that right-click function works just great in every library (Spitfire Audio, Audio Imperia, Project Sam, Heavyocity...) Important that you are in CC mode. The size is a good compromise, at least for me. Finds its place on the keyboard and you can work with it, you just have to get used to the short travel of the faders, maybe a little bit longer would be better but for me it's really enough. As I said, you will get used to it, the touch and feel is really good and the faders have the perfect friction (at least for me). And if I mess up whilst recording then I just correct it in the editor :)
@@MartinHeidenreichMusic Thank you! That is great to know. I will go ahead and buy this and see how it works. What is the next best thing if the Korg NanoKontrol2 doesn't work? The Novation LaunchControl XL seems to have 60 mm faders albeit for double the price. Can I control the CC values with the faders in that? Any experience/critique?

I'm setting up a control surface with Logic /Nano Kontrol Studio - I'm on Logic 10.2 on 10.14.6) Problem: When I go to Controller Assignments, everything works fine, BUT:
Problem 1: 'Play', 'Stop' and other transport buttons are missing from the 'Global' Class of parameters.
Problem 2: When I select the Key Command Class, then the 'Show...' button doesn't work - I click it and nothing happens.
Bear in mind: When I use the default installation of my control surface, the transport buttons are included and work fine. It's just when I set it up manually (which is necessary for my situation) that the transport buttons go walkies.
Thanks!!!! Any ideas as to what's going on? Any fixes or workarounds?
Hi Jay, being on Logic 10.6.2 I don't know if the Missing commands are a bug of 10.14.6. And yes, with the default installation the transport buttons work as default, but the faders are assigned to the volume of the channels, no way to get them working as CC controllers then (if that's what you want them to do)
@@MartinHeidenreichMusic Thanks for getting back to me Martin! In the end I used the key commands editor to make the assignments, which worked well.
Great video. every time i launch logic it defaults the nanokontrol to being a mixer. i just want to use it for midi cc. now every time i launch logic i go into control surfaces pref and delete it. is there a way that it'll remember that i want to use it for midi cc only?
Happened to me too, but I'm not sure how I got rid of it. Maybe that flag "ignore all surfaces when inactive"? something like this
Thank you for this - it is the closest I've come to making this work so far. @@MartinHeidenreichMusic Thanks Martin! I think I know what you mean? Sorry, I don't know Garageband at all. I could only help with Studio One.
i have installed and the editor. The icon in logic does not look like the nano knotrol image. Do I also install the midi driver?
pretty sure you need to install the midi driver too
Thank you for this. I'm really struggling. All I want to do is control the track volumes with the sliders but I can't seem to get it to differentiate between tracks and sliders. Can you advice? I'll have slider one "learn" to slide the volume on track one but then when I do it to track two/slider two- it still only controls track one. How do i Get sliders and tracks correlated? Thank you so much for your straightforward explanation in this video.
Sorry, not really sure how to do so. If I remember well it's not via the learn function but by adding the nano as a control surface in the setting. There is something like "add automatically" and then the faders should control the volume of the single tracks
Use the plugin - www.korg.com/us/support/download/software/0/552/2910/ -
but i want to find out how to use a button to change from cc to mixer. You have both there but not flipping or switching all buttons. You did not use faders as mixer
Right, I don't use those faders as mixer, only CC
Is there a way to send Programm change cc32 to scrollt through a library?
Not really sure, but you could try to program two buttons to send CC 32 in the kontrol editor. I use mine even to open different windows or editors using the buttons "R" "M" and "S" next to the various faders
ok I followed the steps, and i did it.
but now, how do i make it be a mixing controller again????
Good question, just using mine as CC controller. Probably you just need assign it automatically to Logic and it should return being a Mixer
@@MartinHeidenreichMusic
Ok so i found... a work around. not really a solution but still.
When i follow your procedure - the nano kontrol appears in logic as 'microKontrol' and with the functions i assigned as a midi controller. cool.
if i unistall it in midi setup within logic and then do a scan and automatic installation it then appears as 'nanoKontrol' and works as a mixing controller. cool.
I am opting to keep it as a midi controller for CCvalue functions and i have my ipad with logic remote working at the same time and i write automation for the channels that way.
If need be i reinstall it bla bla bla as i said before.
but at least there's a work around.
I disconnected everything and deleted from surface control and still the nano will not respond to the cc values stored through editor.
Hi Hando, if you move the faders of your Nano do you see the CC values in the Event List?
i don't know what is wrong with mine, i have followed these steps. I have spitfire intimate strings, i want to be able to control the expression and dynamics. Using korg control editor I have cc 11 assigned to fader 1, cc 1 assigned to fader 2. Fader 1 does work, it changes the expression but fader 2 doesn't do anything. All the knobs on the nanokontrol have automatically assigned themselves to expression, dynamics, reverb but i don't want to use the knobs i want to use the faders. I don't understand this it's taken me about 4 hours so far it shouldn't be this difficult.
Difficult to say what might be wrong. Check the Event list if the #CC1 from fader two gets into Logic. If so, then check in the Spitfire Audio PlugIn if #CC1 is assigned to modulation (which it should by default). Hope it helps
@@MartinHeidenreichMusic thanks Martin I'll give that go
I found out what was wrong, i went to control surfaces - preferences - midi controllers and unticked the nanokontrol. Logic was hijacking it each time so it was not allowing it to be used in midi cc mode!
@@donnykaraoke1 great! I'm happy if it works now
@@MartinHeidenreichMusic but now each time I turn the Mac on I have to unplug and plug back in the nanokontrol before logic recognises it, any ideas Martin?
How do you open the Korg Kontrol editor in my computer?
download it first! haha
@@aurelialunceford2696 Looks like you sorted it out :) Have fun with your NanoKontrol
Thanks for the video! The only problem I'm having is writing in automation to a pre-recorded track using the nanoKontrol. For instance, if I want to add or edit the dynamics (CC1), I set the track to "Latch" mode, hit play, and when I use the fader I've assigned to CC1 to write the automation, it doesn't record it. Any idea on how to make this work? Thanks.
Hi Tom, not sure if I understood the question, but if you want to record MIDI CC data into a region, why don't you press "recored" instead of "play"?
@@MartinHeidenreichMusic Hey Martin, thanks for the reply. When I record new midi, the CC data writes just fine. It's only if I want to add CC data after (press play, using Latch or Touch) where it won't write.
Kork??
Korken? :D
For some reason, I have to hit the cycle button twice... really annoying. Logic sucks with midi control surfaces.
Other daws suck with other problems. Good that there are so many alternatives, everyone can choose the DAW that sucks less for his personal use
@@MartinHeidenreichMusicyes, it's just impressive how much it can suck with something like that, when usually love the hell out of it.
Too bad it no longer works with the updated MAC OS
Didn't try to set it up with the latest update. Last video I did about it was this on ruclips.net/video/vY5Sdza_ec0/видео.html on BigSur and Logic 10.6.3 The interface of Korg's software presented some issues but fortunatelly the programming went smooth. All the rest is done in Logic anyhow
@@MartinHeidenreichMusic it stopped working with OS Ventura sadly
Crap. I guess I'm screwed with my Nano Kontrol 1.
I don't know the Nano Kontrol 1. Is it that much different?
@ Not as such, but it's not supported by Kontrol Editor. 😒
