- This video produced in 1986 represents an important point of time when the "modern" development of the technology was initiated. John Greenfield recommended that vetiver grass technology be used in India for soil and water conservation. Before introducing it to World Bank financed Watershed Development Projects in India, he went back to Fiji to see how vetiver grass hedgerows had performed from the time they were planted (when he worked for the Fiji Sugar Corporation) 30 years previously,in the 1950s and 60s. He came back with this video that was convincing enough to start a program in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu. This video and the subsequent applications that resulted from the Fijian experience led to the revival of the technology and introduction and use by thousands of users through out the tropics and semiarid areas of the world. More at www.vetiver.org. Note the video is part in Hindi and part English with no subtitles.
The video includes an on site discussion with the farmer about the performance and benefits of the vetiver hedge; a demonstration of surveying a contour line for the vetiver hedgerow, and the preparation and planting of the vetiver. There is a second part at the end that shows some of the wider applications of vetiver in Fiji - comprises photos narrated by John Greenfield.
