Spicebush Swallowtail caterpillar
The Spicebush caterpillar is probably the cutest caterpillar you’ve ever seen and unlike any other you’ve seen too. This cartoon-like creature is like something from a fantasy novel.
The mature caterpillar has “snake head” eyespots. They are green with a pale yellow lateral line running the length of the caterpillar. The underside of the caterpillar is pinkish-brown, and each abdominal segment is ringed by six blue spots outlined in black. One dot on each side is below the yellow lateral line. They have two pairs of false eyespots: It’s this combination of the eyespots and a swollen thorax is believed to mimicry either green snakes or tree frogs. This fools predators like birds.
It lives in a silk-covered leaf tube. They spin silk to tighten a leaf around itself, giving the caterpillar a safe place to hide during the day. It feeds at night. The mature caterpillar continues to feed at night and rest during the day.
Two most common host plants are Spicebush and Sassafras.
Their distribution is in the eastern regions from southern Canada to Florida, western Oklahoma and central texas. They live in yards, pine barrens, wooded swamps, deciduous woodlands, fields, roadsides and parks.
The chrysalis hibernates over winter, and during this time, they are usually brown to mimic dead leaves. The pupae that form during the spring or the summer months are usually green, resembling the new foliage.
The Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly ‘Papilio Troilus’ When the wings are open, the dorsal side of the primary wings is primarily black with dull white to ivory spots along the margin. The hindwings have orange spots on the costal margins.

I'm dying of cuteness overload!
Yep!
Absolute "cuteness overload" and the caterpillar is nice too xx
It's a cutiepillar
I'm surprised it's not the lead in a Pixar film already.
Ever since I was a little boy, I’ve been fascinated by the caterpillar‘s eyespots.
I assume Satoshi Tajiri, being a huge bug nerd as a child, was aware of these things when Caterpie was designed. That or some similar one.
I also thought it looked like a Caterpie!
@@KyrieW Caterpie and metapod are both based on spicebush swallowtails!
IT’S A CATERPIE!!!!
I watchrf this video cuz I thought it looked like a caterpie 😂
I’ve been growing their host plants from seed for several years now just so I can get them in my yard. Really interesting caterpillar and if you have more then one spicebush you can have berries for migrating birds.
I have had so many of these butterflies around my property but yesterday was the first time I saw the caterpillar! :D Thank you for the great video.
Their heads look like hamsters😭😭its so cute
The creator! Is real and has a heart of compassion! Is magnificent and wants to share so much with us, yet we are not humble; only on our deathbed!
Looks like a children’s book

And there is Butterfree
They are extremely commom here in Western-Central Mexico. They've been living in Avocado trees for a long time. Every one in my family are scared of them because they believe that they are poisonous. My grandma even kills them. Right now my avocado tree is loaded with them. They are everywhere!!! And what I love is that they become huge butterflies and most of them are yellow which is very beautiful. Add to that that I grow Zinnias so my garden gets filled with hundreds of these butterflies. It's a very nice site!!!
They are not poisonous! She shouldn’t kill them, they are God’s creatures too!
@@smithsmitherson8106 I pursuaded her into not killing them after showing her what they turn into.
They’re friendly and not poisonous, i kept them till they hatched into butterflies when I was a kid
@@tractorcat6414 They're cute as caterpillars and beautiful as butterflies.
Can't sayI ever heard of this caterpillar before. You're right though it is pretty damn cute! You always manage to find these little obscure creatures, really interesting

It's Metapod!
Cuuuuuute!
CUTEEE
The maker of this video left out one of the most interesting things about this caterpillar. It adds to its imitation of a snake with a little fake snake tongue that comes out if you touch it too much.
THE ORANGE ONE IS A SHINY CATERPIE CATCH IT!!!
They’re so beautiful 😍
i love that little thingy. i wish they were also here in germany.
looks like they have huge cartoony eyes
It looks like God used Windows 95 Paintbrush when he designed it.
new favorite animal
The cutest!!!
your intro gave me a seziure 🦋
Butterfree could have looked like that
سبحان الله الخالق العظيم
I had these caterpillars on my favorite plant and I didn't know about them. Their defence mechanism gave me Anxiety
Oh wow I’d love to see one!
would probably make a popular pet if a caterpillar wasnt the early stagies off butterfly s
Much better off wild though right?! :)
@@AnimalEducate butterflys yer because they need alot off room but the caterpillar is small and slow moving so it would be fine with enough space because its less harmful to keep small animals as long as they aint captured from the wild and r given enough space which ununfortunately they r often not there cages r t o small because they r often made for peoples budget rather than animal welfare
I saw one at school in the field today 🥴
caterpie
From certain angles they can be cute, but for the most part these guys creeeeep meeee ooouuttttttt. I just get a super uncomfortable feeling looking at them especially up close and/or straight on. In general I just get creeped out by any kind of animals with false eye spots. :/
