Make no mistake, Diamond Dave's powerful vocals and stage presence were an integral part of VH's massive success.

For me this is by far VH's best song. Its an almost perfect hard rock song. The bass, drums and guitar are all in sync. And while he wont' win any singing contests, David Lee Roth's vocals just fit with that hard rocking sound.

trust me when I tell you. When everyone just heard that opening riff from Runnin. Everyone back then was like "WTF, is that?"". no one heard anything like that before and then everyone listened to the rest of the album and it was history. just groundbreaking.

When this album just came out, my brother's best friend Brian had just broken his leg and could not get around. He asked me to ride my bike to the record store in the New Sudbury Shopping Center. I was around 12. I didn't know what I was buying. I just remember him giving me $2 to get it for him. When I asked the hot 18 year old clerk for the new Van Helen album, she was shocked at a young kid like me even new who Van Halen even was. (my mom's name is Helen). When I got back and we put the record on ... we were f'n blown away ! You have to imagine that we had never heard anything like this before ! Well, the next thing you know, the huge speakers were now outside on the porch and the whole neighbourhood was introduced to David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen !

One underrated aspect of Van Halen is the quality of the backing harmonies of Eddie and bassist Michael Anthony in many VH songs. Please react to debut album Side 2 blues-based rocker Ice Cream Man. It's a catchy tune with suggestive lyrics.

Having been a child/teen in the 70's.. with bands like Led Zeppelin, Rush, Pink Floyd, Van Halen, Journey, Boston, etc.... we were hearing totally new sounds on a daily basis. It was the norm for my teenage years.. we had no idea what we were getting to live in and experience all the time at that time... the greatest decade of music came out of the 70's in my opinion. Glad I can say I've seen most of them live more than once. (wish I could say I got to see PF live... my one regret).

I remember buying this LP and taking it home. My parents were away for the weekend, so I got on my drums and just cranked it up on one of those old stereos mounted in a huge wood cabinet. We had never heard anything like this. That was the great thing about rock. The greatest bands would produce seminal songs that changed how other people played after them. Van Halen was one of those few bands that was a serious influence to a huge number of other musicians.

I was 13 when this came out. In Los Angeles (where I grew up) 94.7 KMET used to play this tune RELENTLESSLY. You can’t imagine the reaction this sonic explosion of audio genius had on everyone in 1978. Tom Sholtz and Boston blew the world away in 1976 with their amazing songwriting and guitar tone but Van Halen blew up the universe. As a drummer,I can honestly say Eddie Van Halen was an absolute influence on me musically and rhythmically with his sheer balls and attitude. He played guitar like a man! God bless EVH-he is greatly missed and loved. We need more creative artists like him in the world-NOT AI !!!

I was in 8th or 9th grade when Van Halen released this first album and I was hooked. This song and "Cradle Will Rock" (from their 3rd album) are probably my two favorite songs. Both are evidence that a song can be kick-ass with a slower tempo.
Enjoy listening to this band and then remind yourself that your parents probably had sex for the first time in a car while a Van Halen cassette tape was playing in the car's cassette player.

  • @lisam5901

When this was released, we had never heard anything like it. Eddie Van Halen (R.I.P.) laid the groundwork for future guitarists and Van Halen was the blueprint for metal from that point onwards - they picked up where Zeppelin left off.
In concert, it was an energy that was incomparable. Good times....

This was the teenage rage back then - it was so "new" that we didn't know how to act when we first heard it. After that, we'd play this tape (yeah, a tape) on our car stereos with the windows down on the way to Croatan Beach (in Virginia).

I fell in love with the band in 1979. A boom box in art class was blasting out the "train" horn And my life has had Van Halen in it since that day. I'm 59 now and I still have the 1st 5 albums. I listen to them frequently. Those truly were the best of times. What really spoke volumes about the band. The VH symbol was hand drawn on, the majority of my high schools students book covers, and or notebooks. It didn't matter who it was or what their taste in music was. Cowboys were rocking out to VH. Thanks for reacting to my all time favorite band.

When they were kids learning their instruments, Alex actually played guitar and Eddie was on drums. Eddie had a newspaper route, though, and while he was away everyday Alex would climb on the kit and practice drumming. It quickly became apparent where each of their talents really lied. Alex christened Ed's guitar tone "the Brown Sound" for it's unique, warm feel.

I mean what can we say about this amazing song at this point? And about the thunder that was Van Halen? With this album, Van Halen set the stage for the entire Glam-Metal era of the 80's...and they did it in 1978. They were the first ones. Them. Not Quiet Riot like Kevin DuBrow boasted (and whom came along a full 5 years later), but Van Halen. I mean, there ya go. Nothing more to say here, really. RIP EVH.🌹

Great reaction to a great song. This led right into Eruption.. together, those first two tracks provided one of the best 1-2 gut punches in rock n roll history. I'll disagree with one thing tho, at this stage David Lee Roth was as bright a star as Eddie Van Halen. His larger-than-life persona and vocals were critical to the early success of the band.

Got to check that one out. There are others that everyone likes like Jump, Panama, Hot For Teacher, etc. However, the song I am recommending feels like they are just jamming in your living room or something, not over produced but still tasty if you get what I'm saying.
