As a senior and a retired teacher , I never paid much attention to game players n developers as many of my students spent, I think, too much time on them. After the release of Black Myth -Wukong I start to understand more about the gaming industry, especially the gamers(how united they can be when face/fight with the so-called new ideology). What they really want is only a good game to enjoy for fun and relaxation. Beside, a good game can sometimes help you reflect, change views and attitude towards things. Thx to Black Myth Wukong, I have a clearer understanding of the gaming industry and the meaning 'unity is strength '.

I've always wondered why gaming is so looked down upon as a hobby by non-gamers. People praise people for loving chess, for example, but because a video game is in a digital format it can receive criticism. If you think about it, games are quite special. They're a culmination of so many art forms from art style, music, acting, animation and so on all in an interactive format.

I got some serious philosophical insight from taking serious things like “hey, this game talks about Norse mythology how cool, but what about the real one, what does their runes mean, or with black myth wukong Im learning more about Buddhism as it’s based on a real story of a monk that traveled to India and came back to china with lots of Buddhist text that influenced their culture quite a lot.
Why? Why Buddhismhas to say that is so impactful? What is even mythology, why so many myths resemble each other? What they try to tell us if you read between lines?
All of that partially thanks to some games and the symbols, themes, myths, the reflection of a real world problems that they expose you.

Conquering challenging things is usually the most satisfying feeling for us humans. Any achievment that we worked hard for gives us.. meaning. We tend to try evading them by all means possible, but the feeling of getting an actual win compared to one that was granted to us is incomparable. Congratulations! ❤

You’ve captured the essence of the game and novel - it’s about the journey. To mature, devote and find our inner strength and spirit.
As someone who don’t play action games, I struggled very much especially in the first chapter. Wishing for a lower difficulty setting, but ultimately so glad there isn’t an easy way out. After 40 attempts on Withering Wight and White clad, u get the hang of boss combo movements and attack & dodge timings, once u get into this rhythm, everything else after wasn’t hard anymore. Training with them was well worth it

I'm coming up to the end of NG+1, and Erlang was making me doubt myself when I first faced him. People told me I rely too much on my level, but they never told me the best stance to use against him. I, personally, love the challenge the game has to offer because it really makes me stop and analyse why I may be losing - what I'm doing wrong, what I can do differently. I hope that people ARE willing to give the challenge a chance, because it truly is a fulfilling experience.

yellow wind sage, yellow brow, duskveil (phase 2), cloud treading deer, yellow loong, and sun wukong were the only bosses where I genuinely believed I couldn't carry on. but I still persevered and finally beat the game after 100 hours. just like you, I don’t usually play action RPGs and had never played elden ring before, but I’m so happy I played wukong. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so accomplished from a video game in my life. I mean, it’s just a game, but having spent countless hours and days on a single boss fight, the feeling of winning was incredibly satisfying. I’m currently on NG, and for me, it’s just a revenge tour to destroy all the bosses that gave me PTSD, and it’s been sooo much fun killing everyone on the first attempt, lol.

I’m exactly like you: I choose easy/story mode in all games. I’m here to have fun! I bought Elden Ring when it came out. Seemed like my type of game. But no difficulty choices, I would die, LOSE EVERYTHING I HAD, and then had to do it again? I returned the game. I got Wukong and afterwards realized there were no difficulty settings and I was concerned. Fought that damned Wandering Wight and was ready to return this as well. But then I found some help on RUclips, beat him and “got good” as you say. When I needed the help, I went to RUclips, but I am so much better at this game now! I just finished NG+ and will be starting NG++ because I have to beat those damned lantern dudes in the Pagoda to get the last curios and my platinum! LOVE this game. Actually in the original novel, Sun Wu Kong loses a lot to different Yao Guais where those dudes either have celestial cort connections or are close with the Buddahs. So the game is kinda lore accurate because those Yao Guais are very powerful. The wild Yao Guais usually just get killed while these guys with powerful background usually kick Wu Kong's ass and getting back to their masters safe and sound. The novel is suspected to be an implicit criticism of the Chinese government at the time, reflecting on how the people holding the power are hypocritical but cannot be touched.

The vulnerabilities of the bosses are subtly woven into the narrative, encompassing in-game conversations and textual content, making them easily overlooked. Yet, for those well-versed in the classic "Journey to the West," they might discern the bosses' weaknesses and the strategies to vanquish them, which commands great admiration for the tenacity of players who manage to defeat the bosses without resorting to any debilitation tactics.

I remember Ninja Gaiden when it came to get good. Never thought another game would be as fast paced and at the same time challenging. I level grinded to make it a lil easier. But I must say the fights are that good, so far. The fact is that I lost because of my mistakes against well made bosses and that I had to learn how to play correctly to enjoy the game. All wins must be earned-no handouts here. It amazes me how after 10 to 15 attempts, I still see a new attack come out of nowhere to say that you've gotten better, but don't you dare relax. The variety is through the roof.
I just entered chapter 4 at level 93 and level grinded til I maxed out a few things on the survival skill tree. I'm now at level 153 and I still quake in my boots when I think about going back to try to beat that Blacksmith for the 23rd time.

Watching playthroughs on RUclips is a happy pastime for me. If a game is ever too much of a skill issue for me, I'm fine watching someone else continue on. It's like passing the controller to your sibling for a turn. I still do that sometimes with my sister when we get together. We are in our 40's now, but it's what we did as kids too. I especially loved playing RPG's with her. We would always buy game guides and that way one person controls the game and the other is a navigator.

I personally think the difficulty is done right with this game, maybe even better than Elden Ring. Instead of a cheap difficulty slider, it offers plenty of tools to overcome challenges. Just like Mimic Tears, you’ve got overpowered clones. For bosses where spells don’t really work, you’ve got spell binders. And I wouldn’t say the special item to counter the boss is “just a bit easier” - for me, it’s night and day (Chapter 4 boss, omg). Good catch that this mechanic is a callback to the original novel!
Speaking of accessibility, the free and instant respec really puts all the game mechanics into play. I had plenty of items to respec in Elden Ring, but never bothered because the bosses never required me to change things up. Most players don’t have time for NG+, NG++, NG+++ - just let me try things in the first playthrough!! This feature should be in every RPG game!

Im pretty new to Souls games Elden ring being my first and I found Elden ring waaaay harder even with summons but maybe that was a build thing im terrible at making them and level a bit of everything to an extent instead of maxing . I found this game to be pretty forgiving but still harder than I expected since they kept saying it wasnt a souls like. Took a bit to get used to the flow of combat with how heavies will be a bit delayed and all, alot of bosses I could run through in a try or two but there definitely were some tough ones .100 eyed Doaist master at the end of chapter 4 was probably the hardest for me outside of the last boss and that wandering wight in chapter one had me thinking I was supposed to run past and come back later like the tree sentinel in elden ring. I never had any I dont think I can do this moments but I know those very well from Sekiro, that was definitely the hardest game for me.
I think the bit of forgiveness in the game makes it much easier to get extra greedy with attacks and get spammy with dodging. Theres definitely a few bosses ya gotta take it slow and focus on dodges and just getting a bit of damage in.
Ive absolutely loved the game and am on my 4th run and just cant get enough, that video you get at the end for the true ending was so incredible, all the in between chapter videos were so cool too.
Once I got the last trophy I started a fresh save and have been reading each journal entry as they unlock and the stories and info and art those have is incredible,I check out the art in the earlier playthroughs but the stories shock me alot of the time,so weird and cool

The difficulty of this game has spanned quite a large spectrum. Its either really difficult or rather easy depending from person to person.
Personally only felt that 4 maybe 5 bosses were really tough, but everything else was pretty chill. However looking at the general reception of the game, alot of people struggled with alot of bosses.
That said, the gameplay itself isnt even the main point of importance of the game imo. This being a gamescience version sequel for journey to the west has been a really emotional piece for me.

40 year old dad, gamer by night. I'm not GREAT at video games. I struggle through most FS games but done eventually beat them. In the Elden Ring DLC, I couldn't beat Bayle and used a cheese build for the last boss.
In Wukong, I found the spells to be pretty forgiving. Maxing out A Pluck of Many could make it almost solo some bosses. That helped me through a lot.
Only the true ending boss gave me as much trouble as a typical from soft boss. He took me about an hour, whereas most bosses take me four to five tries at most.
So I'd say the difficultly was forgiving, but still satisfying.
I also agree that it's a beautiful game overall. I can't stop taking screenshots in NG+ and I love discovering more lore entries to see how everything ties back to the source material.

I remember with Witcher 3, i started with Story and Sword, went down to Just the Story, but then worked my way up to Death March. The ability to adjust the difficulty made the learning curve much more enjoyable for me. Conversely, when I first played Elden Ring, i can't tell you how many times I dodged that boulder in Caelid, or shot that chicken in Mohgwyn Palace, so i could essentially bring down the difficulty level. Anyway, you never cease to amaze, and I look forward to your boss guides in the future!

I am 100% with you; difficulty settings should be a standard imo and no reason for them not to be since you can just adjust things like aggro, health, damage, etc. Even an option that pops up after a number of tries like “would you like to enable accessibility features?” I play games for the story first and foremost and my favorite games are ones that captured me with the plot and characters. Gameplay really is secondary for me!

I really dislike the action rpg way of managing accessibility. I like to have a more heavily directed experience. As long as all the difficulty options are well thought out I will always prefer a difficulty system.
All though I partially only think this because I think action rpgs are over saturated and standard action games are pretty rare now. In the last 5 years we’ve had only 8 competent action games by my count. Those being dmc5, sekiro, gow ragnarok, sifu, bayonetta 3, the two 5th gen monster hunter games and black myth wukong. Whereas we’ve have seen countless ARPG’s.

Hi! Kite! Thank you for sharing your amazing experiences of this game! After finishing the game, I saw your video and I deeply related to you! I always love RPG games but I just suck at ARPG or any souls-like games. I can never finish any kind of this even if I like watching them😂 I just not talented enough I guess.
But when Black Myth Wukong released, I immediately buy it and decide to finish the game no matter what!As a Chinese, not only because this is A First 3A game from my country, but also because it is a story about my childhood hero--Su Wukong!
And the game is surely very, very challenging to me! 😢Man!Who knows How many times I die and fail in the game! But I did it!114 hours ! I beat the game for first time! And I cried when the game ends and the credits rolling. I feel like I was having the journey and every fight was hard, but I made it in the end. Just like my hero Su Wukong, I experienced my journey to the West. Before the game, I doubt myself can finish it, and now I JUST HARD TO believe that it's over😢
Again, thank you for sharing, Katie!Your words just remind me of that day I finish the game and all those sweets and bitters during playing it. And I couldn't help to share it on the comment. Sorry if it is too long😂

Honestly thought this game was a wrap for me after struggling for days with the white clad noble. I kept trying and kept getting killed. After leveling up to about 32 I was finally able to beat him and my god was that satisfying. After that I really didn’t have that much trouble with any bosses until yellowbrow in chapter 3. Thank god for RUclips though because this game offers little to no guidance lol. I found that most times I wasn’t under leveled I was just fighting the boss the wrong way. But I also did experience a lot of controller input lag in CRUCIAL moments during boss fights so that was another challenge to overcome. All in all I really liked this game, but I wouldn’t put it on the same level as god of war.

Correction Wukong is not the main character of Journey to the west, The main character is a Monk who free wukongs 500 years after the prologue.
People get confuse because The Prologue is very long and Well Wukong is the most popular character, eclipsing everyone in it, it doesn't help that the supposedly main character is just the Damsel in distress...but is a guy.
The rest is pretty accurate. "If wukong is so OP why he struggles so much"? well like it was mentioned in the video the enemies wukong face either counter him in some way or are strong as he is, or he is dealing with some sort of handicap, sometimes he faces problems that he cannot solve by just murdering everyone...despite of him encouraging his friend to do it his way. Many times he just flexes the many layers of immortality he has and how many ways he can die without actually dying or lets not forget that one chapter where his friends drink from a fountain that makes them pregnant, hahaha

I feel the game is balanced for players to struggle if they do not explore or try new builds. Each boss seems to be tuned to be strong against certain styles, but weak to others. If the player keeps changing their specs with regards to each boss fight, the game is considerably easier. It's not tuned for casual play, but it's not tuned to be hard. It's somewhere in the middle.

I cheesed my way through the first playthrough with that infinite mana glitch. Then they patched it. And I couldn't believe I still went through the ng++ difficulty. This game certainly provokes the thought on why we play games. Whenever I had a choice I mostly went normal because easy feels a little embarrassing to me but this one really gave me no choice. On the other hand it feels really rewarding when I finally beat a boss myself, something infinite clones never gave.
I support the idea of accessibility mode. I guess one reason BMW doesn't have it might be related to lack of manpower and tight deadline. But another reason may be the theme of this game is "equality for all"/众生平等. It will be quite philosophical if no difficulty level is an intentional choice.
These said, there have been a lot of "wheelchair guides" in Chinese. Those could be a relief if it's really too hard for you or some boss just gives you way too much grief. But the guides are not cheats tho. You still have to fight yourself just the tactics were figured out by others for you, which reduces the fun a bit not too much.
I really like the game not wasting any of my time and always spawns me closest to boss when I die.

Chapter 3, Kang Jin Star and Non-Able.
Chapter 4, second Bajie fight, Scorpion Lord and Duskveil.
Chapter 5...actually i was quite overleveled...not many problems,,,i surprisingly even defeated both forms of final chapter boss first try...

I usually had 1-2h session and if I get stuck on boss after 10th or 20th attempt then I did a break. Could be few hours break or one-two days. After a while the boss that was initially tought was killed and I felt so good. This game for sure delivers such feeling constantly. You get better at it and you are rewarded. Unfortunately if you get stuck on certain bosses your options are limited. You either get better at this game(respec or different tactic) or you go play other one. I encourage the first option :).

Mechanics of the boss aren’t hard to learn and the game prepares you for most boss fights. With an exception of the Yellow Loong, the game hand holds you every step of the way. It’s only up to yellow loong where I realize I couldn’t rely on items too much. Everything had to be used sparingly and at the opportune time. I respect devs who choose to offer multiple difficulty options and, at the same time, manage to balance a consistent gaming experience.
However, I do believe that lowering gaming difficulty too much will diminish the reward system of a game. With game like this with a purposefully artistic intention of going thru a rebellious adventure, being a easy walkover can degrades the meaning of how difficult life will be when someone try to fight back to great power and authorities. The difficulty is part of the game experience which directly related to the message an art work is trying to deliver.
Also, people is less likely to feel sad and truly care before they suffer.

  • @jonathanmaldonado7913

I love Black Myth Wukong and love the difficulty escalation, but some of the difficulty is just ridiculous. The biggest problem I've had was the boss tracking and homing. It's like they always had 100% lock on 24/7 which made them do things like 180 turns mid swing or zip right up to me from 10 feet away mid combo. One time Yellow Loong was doing the attack where he jumps into the air then does a big ground smash and when I dodged AFTER he initiated the dash he SWERVED MID DASH to catch my dodge. At that point, it's not even actual challenge. It's just stupidly difficult.
I like challenge. I tend to play ganes on their hardest difficulties. I've beaten both God of War's on Give Me No Mercy (Never felt like replaying those games so I never got to GMGOW), I've beaten several playthroughs of Ghost of Tsushima on Lethal right from the beginning, I've beaten both Jedi Fallen Order and Jedi Survivor on Grand Master from the beginning, and I've beaten all 3 Insomniac Spider-Man games on Spectacular and Ultimate (I know those games aren't insanely difficult but going 18 hours without a single death on the hardest difficulty of Miles Morales says something). I've also beaten Sekiro without using any enhancement powders and barely upgrading my tools and yet STILL none of those games difficulties could even try to come close to Black Myth Wukong purely based on BMW's egregiously perfect boss lock on and tracking at all times.

I think a lot of the problems stems from gaming companies have gone very easy on difficulty levels when it comes to games that it's trained a lot of people into playing in that style. A good example of one of my friends bought Skiro I think of the name basically the game is relied heavily on counter attacks, combos, dodging, etc. he's never played a counteract system because he's not a fighting game fanatic so it was fairly new to him. He hated it. He felt that the game just wasn't fun. Anything that people have to put a heavy effort into it. I think turns some off because they don't want to in reality. They need to be pointed into a direction, a good example of telling somebody. Hey, if you're playing stellar blade, you really wanna master combos, escapes and pay attention to the enemy as well as doing counter attacks, and the game starts to make sense.

Wukong is a good entrance to Souls-like genre, it feel weirdly "fair" for it's difficulty, doesn't have many moments like how in Souls game you run through whole dungeon just to get abused by a gang of small enemies or a poison swamp, and bosses get harder but you still feel you get stronger as you progressing

Thanks for the vid! I'm on the fence about it. I've some Qs - Are there more weapons besides your stick? Like any bows, staves, daggers or finger seals etc. Combat looks kinda samey, ya know?
    2) Almost all of the review is on combat. Is there much story? Or is it just bossfight intro/ death cutscenes and those little animated bits. Did any of it grip you?
    3) Also are there any other types of gameplay, like exploration or puzzles? Sláinte! 🍻

Staff is the only weapon type and you have a variety of spells and abilities, but it’s fully melee. And I’ll be honest, if you haven’t read Journey to the West or aren’t familiar with Wukong then you might be totally lost with the story; it starts off with one of the most famous scenes in the novel and I think the expectation is that we are to already know the characters and the setting. The game definitely has a good story and I loved the twist, but it’s very much dependent on you already being familiar with the original novel!
There are secret levels and characters to unlock but I’m not sure I’d call them puzzles? More like following the clues? No traditional puzzle solving like in God of War. There are 107 bosses in this game and that is certainly the majority of the gameplay!
      Hope that helped!!

Yes, fast attacking characters always makes us greedy for more hits before dodging.😅

It’s not a dealbreaker if the game doesn’t have a difficulty setting but I like difficulty options. It doesn’t mean I just want to play easy mode every time and have no challenges. Easier modes, imo, help the player get used to dodging and parrying, without being punished as severely. Once the game becomes too easy then they can up the difficulty for more challenge, smaller dodging and parrying windows, as well as bosses being tougher and deal more damage. I am playing the game as it is though. I’ll play it regardless of a difficulty option. I am currently on chapter 2. I am level 110. Yes I’m grinding sparks. I’m not expecting my character to be OP. I beat the Tiger vanguard first try because I specced the sparks into transformation spells. I got health, defense, and attack maxed, with one point in the rest of the transformation spells. I put points into pluck of many and immobilize. I believe it helped me defeat the Tiger vanguard. I almost died lol but I beat him. I feel that the more sparks I have, the less I have to move sparks around.

There’s a level farming spot mid game (chapter 4), it makes the game much easier
