Best Strategy Long Stay In Portugal - Hack The Tourist Visa

  • How to hack the 90 Day Schengen Tourist Visa, for a winter in Portugal of 6 months over winter for non E.U. citizens. We explain how you can stay in The Schengen region which Portugal is part of for 180 days or 6 months.
This is perfect for Canadians and Americans who would like to spend the cold winters in The Algarve Portugal but find the 90 day visa not long enough. We have checked out a winter stay in Portugal with the Portuguese Consulate in Toronto and they confirm this is acceptable.
When in Portugal apply to the The Immigration and Borders Service (SEF), by phone to get an appointment to extend your tourist visa. The allowable extension is for 90 days. You must apply for the extension before your first tourist visa expires.
When safe travel opens up this is how we will access a long stay in Portugal for 5 months, we don't wish to emigrate too Portugal but would like to spend more than 90 days in the country over winter.
    Thanks for watching.

Hey Tina and Norm!!! Great topic today on Tourist Visa and stay in Portugal. Getting in touch with the Consulate is definitely the way to go. They will have all the updated information on any policies/rules for travel. We have heard of the Schengen area before. That's good you can apply at the SEF service for a Visa extension. That's good the process isn't too difficult, you just need to be diligent and on top of it. Great video and love you guys to the mother effin' moon. 💖🥰🌛😘

Thak you for this informative video. I also come from a non EU country (Australia), although I had "Right of Abode' in UK. I thik this is so useful, even though I doubt I will ever get to use it. In Melbourne, Australia we are still in lockdown, on curfew and mask-wearing inside and out all the time. We can't leave the country without a special permit so we all feel like very bored prisoners!!

It’s very surprising how being so strict with you all your numbers aren’t better, hang in there things will hopefully get better soon have a wonderful week .We got to visit Melbourne and New Zealand on a cruise we did in 2016 we loved it glad we did before Covid .

Great advice. I have found over the years that there are a few good ways(legally) to get around visa restrictions. You just have to do your research and/or ask some long term expat in the country that you wish to stay in. I lived in an Asian country for ten years and used a tourist visa(2 month limit, extendable twice) for about 6 of the ten years simply by flying to a nearby country on inexpensive flights every 6 months. I liked just getting away for a week or so and indulging in duty-free shopping, sightseeing and enjoying the food in a British run colony(at the time). Eventually I broke down and got a resident visa which took a lot of paperwork and gave me the privilege of paying taxes in that country. 🤣. I had just gotten tired of the whole rigmarole of waiting a long time at the police station every two months and making sure that I had all of the necessary forms completed. The one problem with the resident visa was that you had to apply 3 days in advance for an exit visa to leave the country(the government wanted to make sure that your taxes were paid). You could get around that if you had a citizen of the country " sponsor" you. They then became legally responsible for making sure that your taxes were paid. Sorry to have gone on so long but my point is like yours, there are ways to extend your visa in foreign countries, you just need to search them out. Take care and have a pleasant week. 👍🤗❤🛫🙏🌎

We would love to return this year but the COVID restrictions make it very complicated. So this winter we’re going to travel around Mexico for six months.

Very informative video, thanks Norm and Tina. We love Portugal - the people, the weather, the country - the lot! Our first trip was to the Algarve. We stayed in Albufeira and travelled out from there across the Algarve. We hired a private driver for 3 days trips - Gabriel Lima of GL Tours - he’s fantastic! You can find reviews and contact information on Tripadvisor. We enjoyed our stay but found the excessive drinking, stag and hen parties, got really tiresome in Albufeira. We were warned about this before we went but decided to stay there anyway. The carry ons at night got so annoying that we left a few days early and took the train to Sintra. Absolutely spectacular, completely different landscape and microclimate. Highly recommend. We hope to go back in 2022 for a long stay perhaps locating somewhere else along the Algarve and travelling out from there.

Thanks for the video! A few questions maybe you guys have the answer to: if someone is intending to stay for 5 months only in Portugal, should they buy a flight with a departure date 5 months later assuming this will all be approved? Same for accommodation? Also, how soon before the 90 days expire should someone schedule an appointment with the SEF? is this something that could/should be done before arriving? last question, it seems like they ask for a reason on why you need an extension - what would you say is the reason (outside of just tourism)?

I thought you might like to hear this story of ours its really related to one of your previous videos
My husband and i met on a blind date and went on to get engaged for 4 years we got married and the reason was was that I used to give my mum 2 pounds a week keep and my husband used to give his mum 5 pounds a week
We found we could have a mortgage for 4 pounds a week so we thought let’s get married
4 years later our brand new home was paid for
That was 50 years ago next year
We have lovely children and grandchildren and we took early retirement
For me it was 10 years and my husband 7 years ago

If you are planning to stay in Portugal over the 90 day period on a regular basis I would first apply for your short stay visa through the portuguese consulate in canada at least a couple months or longer before your planned departure. This will allow you to apply after you arrive in Portugal for temporary residence. After one year you can then extend online for an additional 2 years. This what I did in 2019 before the pandemic . we were not able to return to Portugal til this year but they extended the deadline to apply for extention to this December. Guys. As informative as this is, one of your commenters pointed out that there is a tax consequence after a certain amount of days ~183, and a tax residency test. Now, a double taxation treaty with your home country and Portugal pretty much determines the consequences of rest of this test. So, if you cannot prove that you have a permanent tax residence elsewhere, then the tax man is going to hold his hands out towards you. P.S. Portugal loves to tax you. Even though you don't have American accents, I would like to mention that with a US passport you can stay an extra 90 days in Poland, Latvia or Estonia (I don't remember which one exactly), Ireland, and France for an extra 90 days due to pre-Schengen treaties. You can also just spend 4 months in a non-Schengen European country like Croatia, and afterwards you'll be permitted another 90 days within the Schengen area because the 180 day rule looks backwards, and isn't fixed. However, there are obvious disadvantages to being a perpetual tourist, mainly crisis, health, and tax wise. EU residency is very easy to obtain (Bulgaria, Estonia, Spain), and it is even easier for retirees or someome with a fixed passive income stream in Portugal, esp. if you'll be doing this for 10 years. If you go the residency route, you can also work obtain citizenship, after 7 years. Residents and citizens have more rights than tourists. In my opinion, Portugal costs as much as WV in the US, so costs are very low, comparatively speaking. If you're British, then it should be a steal.

We are not looking for anything other than a long stay, 90 days, so we can travel to other places while maintaining our access to Ontario Canada universal healthcare and we like being in Canada during our wonderful summers, we have a recreational trailer on a campground with a lake. Could you try to clarify for me please? Whilst doing this "hack" and you've extended to 6 months, does this allow you to "drive" to Portugal and back home rather than fly in and fly out? You say that one has to stay in Portugal for the extended 90 days (or however long, less than) but if you've still say 20 days still left of your 90 in Shengen, can you leave Portugal and cross Europe for the rest of those days?
