Thomas Wesley Pentz, better known as Diplo, is one of the most dynamic forces in music today. The Grammy-winning artist is as much an international brand as he is a musician, DJ and producer. The founder of both his global dancehall outfit Major Lazer as well as the record label/culture lab Mad Decent, Diplo is also one of pop’s most in-demand producers and has worked with artists such as Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, Madonna, Bruno Mars and many more. He continues to tour the world over with Major Lazer and under his own moniker, and is set to headline numerous festivals worldwide this summer including Bestival.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
He wears a suit to a rave and a tshirt to Oxford.
Very interesting observation
It is called 'creating cognitive dissonance'. One of the easiest and least imaginative ways to attract attention.
It is like when you are 14 and you make a drawing of a delicate flower and in the background there is a dark mushroom cloud.... or one of those t shirts with Hitler but he has a spliff in his mouth and a flower crown.
Edgy.
shut the fuck up
Long sleeve.
@@theawecabinet I have an honest question. You said it's "one of the least imaginative ways" to attract attention....what would be (in your eyes) a more imaginative way then. I'm being serious lol you have sparked my curiosity
Never get tired hearing musicians talk about their history and love with music. Diplo needs a documentary!
Caroline OMG yeah.
Why do people always comment and say what other people need to do or should do. Why not just appreciate what you just watched
@@jb2166 it just suggestion. Why so bitter lol
@@jb2166 why do people always comment on comments commenting about others' comments?!
Quiero ver documentales de diplo los hay 🤔
Diplo comes off as one of your close friends that made it big. Happy for him!
he is a close friend to all of us
as soon as he sits down, spills out a crazy story lol
Rightttt. Lmao
Lmao I thought the same shit I’m like wow that other dude didn’t even introduce him and he’s like....So I’m drowning in this river in India! Lmaoooo
Priceless knowledge dropped. Thank you to Oxford for getting this all together and thanks to Diplo for taking the time to do it!
I think it's the first time I watched youtube video this long from start to finish
The amount of genuineness and wisdom i've learned after hearing this from Diplo and Major Lazer is beyond aspiring.
This is amazing. I never cease to be inspired by Diplo. Grateful I had the chance to be at the Mad Decent Block Party in Johannesburg, still one of the best shows I’ve been to in my life! 🇿🇦
loved how he got even more comfortable by the end of the video. also he sounds so humble with the difficulties he went through which is so rare in an industry where everyone cries about how they 'suffer' as an artist. love you, dip!
The man's a genius. Hard ass hell working and by far the best producer/DJ in the game
Logan Flynn Not even close.
@@carlos_kay lol
@@carlos_kay I disagree
Skrillex it’s better. Anybody can remake his sounds. Also he have 9 grammys
@@Ezequiel2022 who the fuck cares lol
I got so much respect for this fellow. Ain't an ounce of pretentiousness in him.
he has his moments
He is watch hot ones
the coolest dad around
You can make as many bad songs as you want, as long as you have one good song.
Two sides of being an artist - business and creative.
If you don't move 100 mph right now in the music scene, you're going to be behind everybody else.
There's no filter in music anymore, creatively and access wise.
GEMS, love this interview.
Diplo, your story and answers were really inspiring. Wish I could have come to your boilerroom set in london last week.
why the fuck you saying "you" you really think he rewatched this interview from the Oxford channel and is reading comments?
You are arrogant and hopeless.
"You can make as much bad music as you want, or as you might have to make, as long as you make one good song people will remember that."
Great interview! Diplo is so well spoken and a maestro in the industry!
man when are you conquering america
If you are watching this video you clearly know who he is. Stop trolling and asking who the hell is he.
Diplo is an OG in the EDM scene. Very insightful interview with a legend in the Industry!
The fact that he was open to answer other questions personally after the runtime despite an extreme busy schedule, just shows what a legend he is in the EDM scene...actually no, he's a legend in the music scene as a whole, respect!
El me inspira a hacer mis pequeñas melodías 😊😎 Diplo is a Genius
I reckon he smells amazing
Seems like a cool fellow.
Haha that's awesome man. Yeah you should definitely take it as a compliment. Next time you're dancing and someone comments be like: Diplo told me that he thought my dancing was crazy. Crazy good!
I feel like a lot of people who don’t know Diplo’s backstory can’t appreciate how cool the music he makes really is. Not saying that’s you’re viewpoint, but this is just a piece of his story. At one point when he lived in Florida he slept under someone’s table. He’s the most inspiring guy to me and I’m not even into making music. Inspiring feels like an understatement lol
he's not.
Easily the most inspiring guy I’ve ever seen. Glad to be a part of your musical journey as a fan, you make me want to go greater
You are the most amazing artist in the world! Your music and collaborations make my heart and all my body rocks! You are the best!
Great interview. The guy is an example of how to get out of your comfort zone.
19:39 green guy clapping his shoulder
lol
lol
,😂😂😂😂😂
HAHAHA
awesome interview.. very inspiring
This is honestly the best video I’ve seen. Since I want to be a DJ and producer.. man this is so amazing to watch
Damn, he is a hard working dude. Respect!
So who else was vibing to diplos old school tracks and moombahton in brooklyn back in the day STAND UP!!!!! I remember taking my moms minivan to go out to club output and dance til 6am AMAZING nights. I knew his shit was gunna get huge one day you cant deny those flares, the influences from munchi and dave nada sabo all those guys. Horsey is still my sh*t . Love you dip
I guess you could say he's diplomatic
Ruben R Films no
More of a DIPLOMATICO now xD
Really great insights from Diplo
Next interview: crazy AWOL Brent.
Blake Loomis hahaha
This is incredibly inspiring for so many spheres of creatives. Whether you like his music or not, he's a reminder of how important it is for an artist to be well grounded in business and being ahead of the curve. So many artists from all spheres get caught up in label issues and the rat race around that, that they forget what they are here to do.
It feels so good to listen to people who know and remember their shit.
Awesome Diplo , love ya bro. I also love to dj and experiment with different music and sounds....u are very inspiring 🤙
Such a warm soul, so rare these days. Especially in his position
👼🌏👏👏
This dude is f-awesome...down to earth and really passionate about his craft...and so real, no snobby attitude or something. Thanks for existing diplo, love your music man!
Thank you so much for motivation, Diplo.
Diplo is the man, his workrate is mad
LOVE his music, really LIKE his character, seems to be very smart and knowledgable, not only referring to his music, and humble - nice combination. Though, I don
t wanna judge a book by it's cover.
Unexpected Diplo !!
Astounding story, you’re very inspiring!
I would have sold my kidney to ask this man even one question.
He is so real I love that
You are a beautiful human I appreciate your art and the insights you are passing on to us. ❤️♥️💜
Loving this! Nice one Dip
Probably the only 1 hour video on RUclips that I'll consider worth my time.
i usually dont enjoy long interviews like these unless its by some1 I really like but this is awesome.
DIPLO! YOU KILLED IT AT SUMMER CAMP 2018!know put that in your search bar and smoke it.
Thanks Diplo - great talk 👍
Was never too sure about this guy, but after watching this video, I really like Diplo. Cool and very grounded guy!
this was a great watch
awesome speaker and super interesting background
Wild man from Florida quits job at Subway and speaks at Oxford. What a world. Love this guy.
This is why all us DJs call Diplo the Don! Much respect man
all you popshit EDM fistpumping DJs maybe yes
@@acecatman dick
Diplo only can get better. Thanks Dad!
Major Lazer's whole story and Diplo's background are fascinating and great food for their music.
This is so cool! Thanks!! :D
5:50 "Dude, I'm gonna die on this rock." I don't know why but that is so funny to me.🤣
Great talk and great Q&A :)
You know its good when the story starts with India 🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳
yes😍💕
Haha..yeah bro😂✌🏻
haah . hell yeah broo
Diplo is also one of the best EDM producers (I'm from India always dreaming to become an EDM star)
Yes
So inspiring
He gives me hope as an artist.

I always was a big diplo and skrillex fan.. always listening to their music when they realease, etc but i never got to be on a concert or something or to meet them...
amazing. full of knowledge
So inspired by this!
Would have been cool to hear him expand more on his early days and how he started getting gigs and scaled up - good interview though!
I genuinly love oxford. I hope, I'll get to experience the school ... one day.
I thought Diplo was a douche, but he actually seems pretty down to earth to me.
EDIT: Hi Diplo (if you read this).
Turd Ferguson Twitter beefs, etc.
Connor Waldo same tbh but it really is mostly because he hung out with riff raff. I think alone he’s a really deep fun dude.
I love Riff Raff
love him til you actually see him. I still love his music, not gonna lie but the celeb side of him really thrown me off.
Connor Wlado lol Diplo is just super sarcastic online
This is life inspiring
19:39 lmao the guy I. The green jacket clapping his shoulder
Diplo: " I never said to myself I wanna make a hit song"
also Diplo: "I've learned what it takes to make hit song"
Coincidentaly...
Amazing journey ❤️❤️❤️🤘🏼
He is a professional and this was the only way we were going to learn anything from him.
Thank You!
54:27 i thought he asked for his skype LMFAOO
Zallard hahahaaaa
Zallard same wtf haha
Amazing!
@42:58 then COVID happened...also, love me some diplo, mad respect for all the stuff😎
well-spoken
DIMPLES got me gagaaaa lawd have mercyyy
never thought it would start with him explaining India in the 00s
I love you @Diplo!
The best diplo
Legend
Big Thank u From D J David To ❤️ 🔥🙏🏽🙏🏽 💯 🔊 Diplo
So inspirational
I fucking love you. People born on November 10 are the best. ;)
he's actually pretty cool
lol if I was in the audience I'd be so immature at questions like 'are you single?'
19:39 that shoulder clap tho
37:01 you knew that type of question was coming....
I just wrote a very thoughtful essay addressing the issue of wimmin DJs somewhere in these comments (in case anyone is interested).
You are right, these questions are inevitable ..... and extremely patronising to women!
The dude spends 30 minutes describing the long road it took, as well as healthy dose of luck, to get where he is.
She wants him to wave his hand and make women famous and admired, and of course, he cant tell her the real truth, because as you noticed, a patronizing answer befits a patronizing question
I don't get why it's his responsibility...it's like the person asking the question thinks every guy that does this actually makes it big, there are thousands of guys still going through the shit he did for years... *this* is what makes you a great DJ, not just someone that mixes one song into another.
Its a perverted mentality that permeates thru higher edu institutions where they posit that for someone to become successful, 99 other people have to be oppressed
Equality of outcome coming to a music industry near you...
Lmao at 20:50 bottom left
Haha id be taking pics too if diplo was in front of me 😂
For ppl asking who he is, he is not only diplo, but he is part of major lazer, LSD (Labrinth, Sia, Diplo) and also jack u (skrillex, Diplo), and he also is the creator of mad decent which is a record label with millions of followers/subscribers
Very inspirational to see diplo tell his story at Oxford! 🤣
he's amazing
that question that implied that he has to get out of his way to make opportunities for female dj's is just ridiculous
Exactly, I was like what the fuck girl ?
Did anyone made any opportunities for Diplo, Tiesto, Cox and others ? Hell no.
Diplo talks about perseverance and all the struggles he went through and she had the audacity to ask such a stupid question. 🤯
Amazing
I really want to meet this guy, Diplo, one day! I also want to be a close friend of his! Why can't I meet him???? He's such an awesome and great guy!
