    I think the last earthquake was a reference to the first episode with the cave woman. An earthquake separated her and her baby from her family and in the last episode, Kevin finds his family just after an earthquake

    Answering your question about the timing after the girls leave home and when they arrive at the lake, if you look at the back of their car, the metal cutter is on it. Yes, the metal cutter John asked his friend about on yhe firefighters house and the guy didn't find, so we can assume the girls went to the firefighters house before going to the lake.

  • @COMMANDRofAWESUM

    Kevin went to the grandfather's house before he went to the water too.

      +COMMANDRofAWESUM I think it's safe to assume that the girls didn't go straight to the lake. We see Evie grab a backpack and bolt cutters from the trunk of the car. It's possible they had to get that before staging their disappearance. The earthquake happens a few hours after they all left the dinner party. We know that because in the first episode it wakes up the Murphy household and they notice that Evie didn't come home yet, and she was supposed to be back by 11. When John calls the parents of the other two girls, he says it's 3 o'clock in the morning.

      but why would they not show us if Evie and her girlfriends went to someplace else first? I mean, we're watching their point of view, why hide something that probably could clarify the confusing scene you're about to show us (assuming they know we're about to notice just how inconsistent the timeline is)? it's either a mistake or an intentional situation.
      because let's say this time issue is not relevant to what may come (which kind of seems to be the case honestly, since I don't think we'll ever revisit Jarden in season 3), wouldn't it be much less confusing not to show us Kevin at all? you know just cut it out, we would still know that it's the same night, no need to show him doing his part of the story and mess the timeline gratuitously, right? unless, like I said, it's intentional.
      so hope is the latter, 'cause if it's a mistake, it's a really big one, I mean it fucks with the timeline so hard that it takes you out of the immersion.

    This show is amazing! I watched thw two seasons on demand in two days, forcing myself to seperate from the intriguing complicated characters and plots. The one thing that has stood out was the eposode with Nora and Regina King , when she finally answered the questionnaire and how intense it was. I felt the energy coming through the TV. Did imply that the family members could be responsible for the missing family members, and the theory of the lens phenomenon. Cant wait for season 3!

  • @Panyc333
    @Panyc333 8 лет назад +7

    I agree with Alonzo. I thought earthquakes in Jarden are a harbinger of "miracles". Kevin in the lake, Mary's awakening, Kevin's family together even though he should be dead. Nora's "fix that Jesus" was a nod to this IMO.

  • @haunttheeditor
    @haunttheeditor 8 лет назад +30

    I dont think Mary woke up because of the earthquake, I think she woke up because she touched Lily. Also, I saw the last earthquake as a parallel to the seasons opening with the cavewoman and her family getting trapped inside her home (the cave).

    • @evbb
      @evbb 8 лет назад +10

      +Kody H I like that lily theory too. There's a lot more going on in this show that I can't put together with several of the characters.
      Lily is Holy Wayne's kid, and I'm not entirely sure if his shtick was bullshit or not. Holy Wayne offers Tom relief in an episode in Season 1 and Tom refuses, Wayne says something like, "You're all suffering and no forgiveness, aren't you?". Wayne also trusts Tom with protecting Lily's birth mom. To me, it feels like Tom is being willed to protect Lily by design, and this is further backed up by Tom showing up when Lily is about to be trampled to death to save her life again.
      Tom seems important, but I have no idea why. He even gets raped by Meg and she reveals her intent is to get pregnant. And who knows what Meg actually knows? If Tom is being willed to protect something important by design, isn't it also possible Meg is being willed to burn the whole place down by design?
      And then there's Kevin, who seems super important, but with the underlying bloodline stuff going on here (Which may or may not be connected to the Prehistoric Earthquake in first episode of season 2), is his purpose a benevolent or malevolent? They point out accurately in the review, the earth seems to be spitting him out every time he dies, and when I think about that in combination with your lily theory, I'm not convinced the earthquakes are a good thing.
      The only thing I really know about this show, is I'm excited for the next season. Those bastards know how to write good television.

      _she reveals her intent is to get pregnant_
      She revealed her intent was to get HIM pregnant, which is a little different. But yeah, I don't think Meg knows a whole lot. Her intent just seems about inflicting as much emotional distress on other people as possible much like Patti.

    Every episode of this season played a nondiegetic cover of a popular song with lyrics that pertained to the tone at hand, so it was brilliant that the 3rd act began with a poignant diegetic covered sung by the main protagonist. Also, this season was made up mostly of close ups and extreme close ups; all the actors did an amazing job of delivering powerful performances with their eyes.

    1. Back in the first episode of this season, we see Evie and Erika signing to each other. We only catch a glimpse of the conversation. What we catch is Evie saying: "Need" and Erika responding: "You don't need to worry". This was, at least, the night before John's birthday. And, of course, John's birthday is the day Evie disappeared. I think Erika was telling her that she (Erika) is planning on leaving the family soon which is probably one of the reasons why Evie decided to join the GR. On the bridge, the look and tears on Erika's face made it clear that she DOES understand why her baby girl is doing this.
    2. Back in season 1 twice we hear a news report talking about an Australian man who claims that he crossed to the other side and came back. I think the guy the Kevin talked to in the Hotel (the man who told him how to get out) is this man. He speaks with a stereotypical "Australian dialect".
    3. Speaking of Australia, the letter that the man on the watchtower gave to Micheal was addressed to a man living in Sydney, Australia.
    4. Evie is with the GR in that "Welcome to Miracle" building. She was the one singing with Meg.

    • @twdjt6245
      @twdjt6245 8 лет назад +3

      +majinshenmue I disagree with your theory on Erika telling Evie about her plan to leave .........because remember last episode when Evie encountered Meg when she visited not long after the Departure.....when they were showing Meg's past/background.....Evie says to Meg (that she finds crying on a bench) "Sorry you didn't find what you were looking for here....nobody ever does"....
      I think later on when Meg joined the GR and got into the higher ranks...she remembered that day and Evie, saw/recognized that she was a damaged person missing something in her life and a citizen of her target town......somehow got into contact with her and proceeded to brainwash her into the cult where they then planned the disappearance, etc. It would've taken a good while to plan all of that
      If your theory were true, that would mean that Evie and Meg somehow met, got thoroughly brainwashed, and planned the whole bridge and infiltration thing all in less than 24 hours? I think not.

    If I were Nora, the "fix that, Jesus" incident would have been spooky but ultimately not convincing. It would've suggested that (i) the world were so Nora-centric that tectonic plates shifted and affected thousands simply to give me an ambiguous come-to-Jesus moment... or (ii) that each time there's an earthquake, somebody out there is sassin' god...
    Besides, if point was to chide "lose your 'tude," why punctuate the demonstration with the miraculous awakening of Mary? The tremor collapsing the 2nd-floor bathtub atop her head on the other hand...
    And if I were Jesus, I'd have fixed the damn radio... or at least have made the "broken" radio recommence its transmission... That way, it'd be less on-the-nose and leave some wiggle-room for faith. And that would fuck with her a bit more too (a la Lindelof to us).

    Season one was a lot like Lost in terms of throwing stuff out there thad had no answers, not even in the mind of the writers. This season didn't go that route, it seems like they had a plan for what was going on and they ended up answering major questions like what happened to the girls and whether or not Mary really woke up, etc.
    Also, odds of 9000 people not disappearing given a 2% chance would be 0.98^9000= 10^-79. A very very very small number.

The deepness of the conversations it stirs up is overwhelming in a good way. There's some Pavlovian conditioning going on with the main piano theme, my eyes well up every time it plays. There was some time issues with Kevin beating the girls to the lake, he went to the old man's house first. Anyway great show, I hope it returns. Fingers crossed HBO, you do this for the fans.

    5.37 * 1015,734 is the statistical odds of Jarden not being subject to a Departure. In relative terms there are 'only' 4 * 1079 atoms in the known universe.
    You are, statistically, more likely to win the lotto, every day, continuously, for 20 years than Jarden's population not being directly effected by the event on October 14, 2011.

      Idk 2% of the world's population departing does not necessarily mean it is evenly distributed around the world. If you're saying that the people of Jarden have extended family members or friends outside of Jarden and none of them were departed either then maybe the plausibility is far fetched, but throughout the season the point is the 9,261 residents in Jarden did not depart we never delve into the residents' relationships outside of Jarden.

    You know, everyone seems to miss the point of the show. It's not the disappearances. They just serve as a vessel to relay the message. What do the disappearances all have in common? At the exact moment those people vanished, someone was wishing they would disappear. The moral of the story is to "appreciate what you have." Kevin walking in to see his whole family waiting for him was the culmination of that lesson. The rest is just filling in the blanks.

    Can somebody checks the hour on Evie's phone when she leaves it in the car planning fake departed? Because the earthquake is said in first episode to happen around 01:00 am So if the hour on the phone is right then it is definitely not a slip from the writers but as they say in the review : the girls made a few stops before heading to the lake

    I thought Kevin went to Michael's grandfather Virgil's house because he was gonna tell him how to get rid of patty. Then he ran off the go drown himself in the lake. Even so the timeline is so off. Also, i forgot but did Michael take him to Virgil's house that night or just gave him directions and he went on his own? Again all while "sleep walking"?? And if Michael was there with Kevin and Virgil, ?? And after the earthquake when John n Michael went to go look for Evie, was Michael privy on that Kevin was in that lake at the time of the girl's "disappearance?? Lol

    I felt the show left lots of unanswered questions -- like, what's up with Kevin, and all the earthquakes and deaths and resurrections? Is he Jesus or something? Why did he have to keep killing Patti? Why was she hanging onto him in the first place? Is he just crazy, or is there really something supernatural about him?
    And for God's sake, why was there so much smashing of electronics in this show?
    I love the show way more than Lost, which really descended into narrative criminality, but still ... I don't know if The Leftovers actually made some kind of sense that I just don't see, or was trying to make sense but didn't quite pull it off, or didn't even try to make sense, a la Lost.

      Exactly like lost. The writer is a piece of shit. I feel like a moron for giving him a second chance. He fucked up. Especially if that was the last episode of the series.

    They better pull off a third season. I cannot accept a series ending where the mild terrorism of the Guilty Remnant goes unpunished or there's not even an explanation as to why the people in Jarden would deserve to have their town thrashed and several of them injured or maybe killed in the process (seeing as there has not been any retaliation so far, and it's friggin Texas we're talking about). It might be just me as the GR has always been the part of the show that makes me cringe as their motivation and reason for existing remains unexplained for the most part, at least in a convincing way. Maybe that's the point and you're supposed to hate them visceraly but I cannot excuse the stupidity of the characters who assume that they have something to offer or that 'they know something' just because they act weird (very Lindelofian).

    I didn't think Nora fought very hard when that crazy lady took the baby. If someone took one of my step-kids I would scream, flail, punch, kick and otherwise fight like a honey badger. Nora really didn't fight that hard.
    Also the dog ran away from the town because of the final earthquake. Animals can sense when earthquakes are coming.
    As for the season 3 being about the Murphys, Patty did say something like, "I can't figure out if he is a part of your story or you are part of his," To Kevin.

    I didn't like how the show so directly revealed that magic is real while still trying to avoid explanation for the departure. Felt like a cheat really, and contradictory to the foundation of what the series is about. I mean, really, what was the point of introducing that?

    Earthquakes without aftershocks, a small but frustrating oversight...
    And the earthquake occurring simultaneous to the disappearance was an annoying misdirection on behalf of the writers.

    • @Punko1969
      @Punko1969 8 лет назад +2

      +Damon242 +Damon242 It's not an oversight if the earthquakes aren't natural occurrences. If there is no fault plane to settle, then there would be no aftershocks.

    • @Damon242
      @Damon242 8 лет назад

      Punk0 you'll have to clarify here what you mean by "fault plane". I live in an earthquake-prone area and have never heard of that before.
      What is there that suggests that these earthquakes aren't natural occurrences? Lack of aftershocks is a common issue in television depictions of earthquakes, but there isn't anything in the season that ever suggests that they're supernatural

    • @Punko1969
      @Punko1969 8 лет назад

      Damon242 The timing of the quakes are what suggest that they aren't natural. The first one happens at the moment Kevin drowns himself, I can't remember what was happening during the second, but they are clearly syncing up with events in the story. That's not natural, or they are giant coincidences stemming from bad writing. Considering who's writing, I'm guessing they aren't coincidental. Kevin seems to keep being sent back from a sort of purgatory, and should have died multiple times. That's not natural either. If they are going to try and give scientific explanations for what has gone on, the last season is going to be a mess. There are so many things that go beyond natural in the show, including millions of people disappearing at once, that I don't see where your resistance is coming from. Not only are those two quakes tied together, but I'd be shocked if they weren't tied to the one that happened when the cave collapsed at the beginning of the season. Wasn't it right at the time of a child birth? Doesn't Kevin seem to be being reborn every time he dies? Taking Lost as an example, Lindelof is no stranger to symbology like this. The sad part is that he also doesn't like completely explaining everything and loves ambiguity, so we may never know all the answers.

    Leave it to the young turds to insert gun politics into a movie with almost no guns involved.
    While I love the Leftovers, season one would have been a great ending. Season 2, not so much they introduced more wrinkles into the disappearance like connecting Nora to Azrael...yet somehow managed to ignore it for the rest of the season.
    The problem with season 3 is what are they going to do. The essentially wrapped up the Garveys though they have plenty of potential material with Lily and the GR.
