    When I was younger I sometimes sparred with a friend, he was a lot more into kung fu movies than I was. One time he tried swaying and throwing some drunken fist moves he'd seen from the movies, and I am not going to lie, they were really hard to predict. We were not serious or anything, but I could totally see how the moves could work, specially if mixed up with the regular stuff.

      I mean, sure if you're against someone who doesn't train, then you're probably faster and are throwing unpredictable moves. But against another person who knows how to fight? Yeah you're probably going to get beat up if they're anywhere close to you in skill.

      @@justalurker3489 That's kind of a lot of codified traditional martial arts in a nutshell: They tend to presuppose that you're going up against someone who, if not untrained, is at least not as trained as you are. After all, they weren't developed for combat sports or warfare, they were developed for self-defense and self-mastery, and generally "self-defense" means some malnourished punk who wants to mug you, not a hardened veteran looking for a fight to the death.

      @@UrLeingod But I thought a lot of martial arts were actually developed to fight and defend against invaders or to be used in warfare and stuff. @@ReblazeGaming Most of history is not actually warfare though. Most of history is pretty unremarkable peacetime where the underlying contradictions of society eventually bubble up into wartime.
      In peacetime warrior traditions and martial arts continue to be practiced, but without actual battlefields where the equipment and soldiers of the time are trained to the most extreme extents, techniques tested etc, they will devolve into what can allow the authorities of these arts to survive. Dojos tend to "devolve" into sport and self defense classes because these are the only real expressions of martial arts in peacetime. This is true of Karate and Muay Thai, Taekwondo and Jiu Jutsu. Without warfare requiring martial arts, martial arts become nothing more than a sideshow.
      As such the way we experience martial arts as people born in peacetime will always be greatly divorced from how martial arts in the purest expression of combat can look like. Personally I think that's for the best, even as a martial artist.

    Even if you can't find any examples of "real" Zuiquan, Emanuel Augustus proved the thesis of the style true.
    You can in fact zap away the opponent's energy and will to fight with creative evasion, you can also infuriate the judges and have crowds throw trash at them while booing when they refuse to give you the W in fights you thoroughly dominated.

    • @GallowglassAxe

    Something interesting about Drunken Fist in fiction that I think is worth mentioning:
    As far as I'm aware, Drunken Fist doesn't *lose* when it's employed... and I think that's part of the trope of the "unbeatable joke character". (Naturally, I can't be certain here, I may have only seen about 10% of it's fictional depictions if we're being generous). I think part of it is because "lovable antics" and "tension" don't mix very well: If our hero is being a goofball in a fight or just having too much fun then it's super entertaining to watch, but there is almost never any tension in the scene. The goofball character is always in control of the fight, and if that character isn't dominant in the fight then it's just not fun anymore. These characters will win every fight you put them in, but will never fight any fight that matters.
    (This isn't limited to drunken fist, by the way. Zangief is a perfect example in SF5's story: He's just having a grand old time and really doesn't seem to break a sweat in any of his fights, even against capable world warriors like Balrog... but that's because if we were to put Gief up against M.Bison and have Gief lose... well then watching Zangief after that point wouldn't be as much fun.)

    • @BHRaccoon
      @BHRaccoon 2 года назад +8

      A very good observation! The mood of scenes with Drunken Boxing characters rarely lends itself to them losing. I do recall, though, that Rock Lee did lose in Naruto when he first employed Drunken Fist (or at the very least was on the verge of losing before being rescued), and his fight was against one of the more important foes in the series at that time. However, his opponent beat him by finding ways to make him sober up, as it was discovered that he could only use the style while actually drunk. In that way, the only method that an enemy was able to use to defeat a Drunken Fist practitioner was to *remove* Drunken Fist as an option in the fight.
      In other words, the style itself was still unbeatable!

    • @Macrochenia
      @Macrochenia 2 года назад +2

      I think part of the reason it never loses in fiction is because it's pretty much universally a heroic martial art. You just never see antagonistic characters who are practitioners of the style.

    I feel like Bo Rai Cho could have been a great character, considering how cool he is conceptually, if he fought like a mix of Po from Kung Fu Panda and Despa from Ranking of Kings . A fighter who has the technique to be an unstoppable badass but his body can’t keep up so he instead melds his knowledge with his weight to take advantage of it with some unorthodox attacks but MK just made him the funny fart and puke man. What’s strange is that those moves could be changed to remove the grossness and still work the same such as breathing a burst of fire to replace the fart and a move where he spills a puddle of his drink to replace the puke. Such Wasted Potential

      Maybe thats why he stands out more, I guess if one is not a fan of a charcater that imcorporates burfs and farts in a fight but for Bo Rai Cho he stands out from the norm. Everyone else style of drunken kung fu is sorta the same the way you see them, pretty much to catch the opponent off guard by their crazy movements and offence. However some differentiate like Chin Gentsai who somewhat fights with a weapon which is a Sake bottle. And in the case of Bo Rai Cho he imcorporates that by his weight and domeanour.
      Also the fact some of these characters fighting style and looks are somewhat based on Jackie Chan /Freddy Wong it surprises me when noticing Bo Rai Cho might be imspired by Sammo Hung who also is fat and a great martial artist(& probably Jackie's friends).
      He maybe disgusting but I still like him. Plus in a game full of blood and gore, burps and farts are nothing.

    Speaking of Tabletop RPGs, Pathfinder 2e also has the monk, a pretty straightfoward class with the whole idea of martial arts: using inner knowledge and the mix between strength and speed to get the upper hand, and the fight styles are represented by the different stances you can take. Most are either focused on Strength, Dexterity or Wisdom, but the Stumbling Stance differs from it. It is a stance that favors Charisma and Dexterity, Dex to hit the attacks and Charisma to fool your opponents with a well-placed Deception check. When you enter the stance, you gain bonuses to feints and your fists gain the Backstabber trait, dealing more damage against foes who are caught offguard by your bubbling movement, and if you get hit by an enemy, you move yourself in such a way that you are able to make your next attack more precise. You can even feint before doing your Flurry of Blows and beat someone even more!
    Also, fuck Bo Rai Cho. All my Drunken homies hate Bo Rai Cho.

    You're done with MK, I get that. But somehow it manages to keep slipping into these videos here and there
    the Bajiquan video showed an aspect of 3D MK in general I think is kinda silly. Characters have listed fighting styles, but almost never look at all like the art in question. The style names are legit, but onky Tae Kwon Do looks at all like that, for 3D MK Standards.
    Hell, for Armageddon a lotnof fighting styles were stripped away and given to someone else. Meaning the arts really meant nothing to who that charafter was outsife of the function. And Li Mei didn't even keep Baji, she kept Lui He Ba Fa.
    And sometimes it made no sense, like Kali Sticks. When even Sonya kills people, bringing a weapon designed to be a Sword training implement to a fight to the death just doesn't make sense
    They only started to have characters who looked like they used X martial art (not counting Liu Kang) in MK11, and even then ABI counted that as the last straw

    You've opened my eyes to a what I think is a *brilliant* mechanic with Brad Wong's walk. The idea that a character's walk cycle is uneven with bursts of forward movement followed by slowdown, or the other way around is... super interesting to think about and gives the character a sort of "passive footwork" that I think has a lot of potential. Sadly, I don't have any Dead or Alive games to try him with, but it's got me thinking of all kinds of mechanics you could use to mess around with it. If this hypothetical character starts slow and has a quick forward move, maybe some moves change his position in the walk for a few frames after you land them, making the first steps you take after using this move be the sudden quick move before slowing down again, and also makes me wonder about what potential we can dig out of non-standard walk cycles for other characters.

    • @SugarPunch
      @SugarPunch  2 года назад +2

      I didn't get a chance to showcase it, but Tekken 7's version of Lei Wulong also added movement options to his Drunken Boxing stance. He can do a steady shuffle moving backwards, but his forward walk is a disorienting stumble that starts slow, then suddenly lurches forward swiftly while actually swaying into and out of the foreground/background. It's VERY difficult to keep an eye on him before he suddenly launches an attack out of it, and it looks VERY cool when he does it! A few of those Lei clips actually have it.

      @@SugarPunch ya know, now that I think of it, the only other non standard walk cycle I can think of is Parasoul of Skullgirls. Though in this case, it's meant to demonstrate poise and precision, not a lack of control (real or feigned).

      It has to do with the style of the sword. Some swords have a bamboo grip and soaking it makes it easier to hold. There is no significance to it being alcohol as water works just as well, but most depictions in media don't have a badass samurai carrying around a cask of water, haha.

The game has basically 2 (or sometimes more) characters for each fighting style, making them essentially moveset clones with few differences here and there. Yuli is probably the only female Zui Quan practictioner in a fighting game, and Qingtao is her master (complete with the Beggar So appearance style)

    If you ever watch fights, whether official or not, you'll notice one thing that most fights have in common. It's not knockouts. It's whoever gets tired first loses. Knockouts flashy and cool, but even if you are an expert, there is still a level of luck involved to perform a knockout. When tired, fighters' form starts to break down, their reaction time slows down, they become more distracted, their agility lessens, their strength decreases etc. If you've ever sparred or even punch a punching bag for 5 minutes, you know exactly what I'm talking about. This is why boxing, being the most "simplistic" martial arts, works so well. Tae Kwon Do, Drunk Fists, Capoeira and the likes all use a lot of energy, and some of those moves don't translate to hitting the opponent. If you're about the same fitness level as your opponent, you'll tire out more quickly, which means your chances of losing the fight increases.

    Yknow, I'm a little surprised that you didn't bring up Soul Calibur's Voldo.
    While he may not strictly be a practitioner of Drunken Fist, he absolutely follows the tenets of it- being able to attack unexpectedly from quite literally any position- including during rolls and after knockdowns!- his idle animation is infamously a moonwalk with exaggerated motions, and when stripped of the context of "Drunk" many of the moves in a few different styles of Drunked Fist end up looking like this sort of Hellraiser Cenobite nightmare motion with terrifying flexibility, which uh... listen, I think we've all had a nightmare about Voldo at one point or another.
    Again, certainly not the standard archetype for it, but I think it would have been worth an honorable mention.

    In Soul Calibur 4 and 5 Yoshimitsu has a secret meter Iron Fist Meter that allows him to randomly access Drunken Fist stance. He becomes invulnerable to any attacks even unblockables. It causes him to switch to any of his stances that have tech dodge built in. For example in drunken fist if you hit him low he will go into dragonfly or flea stance, if you try to hit him high he will go into meditation and other attacks cause him to spin and appear behind you. The only catch is if you are not attacked in the first second then you are stuck in the drunk stance and can now be hit. Basically punishes the opponent for attacking you in drunken fist.
