Great video. Thank you for this "bells moment". They are Indeed a powerful instrument. And they are much needed today. Your message will come across. Fair winds !
Having been a tour guide for Brugges, Ostende, Ypres or Ieper then later working on and off in Ostende I was always amazed by the culture and respect for the local history of Flanders. They certainly know how to have fun as well. I remember one New Year's Eve - going out on the evening of 31st. December and finally getting to bed late morningof 2nd. January. It's been a few years now since I was there but I'll never forget the proud, friendly and loyal people of Flanders.
We found the Flemish speaking people of Belgium to be extremely friendly and helpful. It was a very happy accident that we ended up keeping Britaly there for several years. We will always have fond memories of Flanders, as well as our trip through the other parts of Belgium. We hope you get to go back soon. Chris, Rossella & Emma 🙂
Thank you! It's very hard to know what to include and what to leave out with things like this. Your feedback helps us for future videos. 👍 Chris, Rossella & Emma 🙂
Very familiar sights for us. We were in Temse 2 days ago. Where you stayed for a couple of hours, there was a big warf (Boelwerf) up until 20 years ago. My grandfather's brother was a shippainter over there for his whole life. We used to waterski there near the bridge. In summer people picknick on the sandbanks at low tide. We live near Brussels, so we're looking forward to that episode 20:47
Hi Henri, I read up about the Boelwerf while I was editing this video - it's an interesting story and a lot of industry in the UK has gone the same way. I also read that the bridge in Temse was designed by Gustave Eiffel. It was high tide when we passed under and we had some trepidation as from a distance it looked like there was very little clearance for us to go under (On the red light - which I've still not got used to!). Fair winds, Chris, Rossella & Emma :-)
I live in Baasrode (4k behind Dendermonde) on the Schelde. There is a museum of a shipyard where they used to make “botter” boots in the past to go fishing on the Schelde for eels and transport goods inland from Antwerpen
As young lad the church bell in my village was a form of comunication and when the rang the was a moment of pause to see what the message was for exanmple the allways rung at mid day the Angelus.
to reply on your wondering that Belgium has quite some maritime activity. in the past there were several shipyards where shipes were constructed as well the last known bigger LPG tanker was called Petrogas II which was later on renamed to Harriette N steered under a Singapore flag. The Boel shipyard was finally closed in 1994.
Hi Jan, yes you're right - during the editing of this video I discovered that the spot we moored with all the new apartment blocks was all part of the shipyard at Temse, where they made some huge ships. There are also a load of star forts around and that leads to another interesting rabbit hole, with maps from the 1600s. Maybe we'll touch on these in another video... Chris, Rossella & Emma 🙂
Most of those bells had wonderful sound. They are not all related frequencies but sometimes the beat frequencies are related. It is similar to cymbals.... well cymbals have more unrelated frequencies. As for your other line: no man has not learned anything.... our path has gotten worse not better. But hope is not lost.
I had no idea bells were such complex things until I started looking into this. I think the people have learnt a lot now. The puppet masters behind the scenes haven't changed at all, but if we do not believe in their deceits and if we instead deny our consent to their absurd plans, they become powerless... Fair winds, Chris 👍
Great episode again. Thnx. And the bit of history on bells. Interesting. For me as a guitarist the sound of bells always makes me think of how a 12-string acoustic guitar sounds. Personally I think tyat both bells and 12-string are not 100% in tune and thus creating loads of additional harmonics.
Thank you! Absolutely loads of different frequencies and harmonics in all bells. This "J806" bell sounds particularly lovely to me - much more so than the post WW2 bells. There are so many rabbit holes to explore these days... Fair winds, Chris 👍
Being Belgium - American (Born in Antwerpen) it's always a nostalgic experience to see this type of footage..The past history of the "Bells" was quite revealing..Specially the added pictures from the past brutal and despicable acts.. Is it possible to add a map in your nice footage to follow the voyage.. Thanks for sharing..
Hi Frans, glad you're enjoying the videos of Belgium, we loved our time there! We have a map at the beginning of each video, so tracing our steps can be done from that. We'll look into putting up a map showing the route we took and posting it online. Chris, Rossella & Emma 🙂
Don't worry, you can be bald and grey at the same time. Sad about the noise complaints. It reminds me of people who move next to an airport and then complain about the noise. You knew it was there before you moved.
Wetteren looked lovely from the water, it would have been really nice to have time to stop and explore but we had a limited time available to make progress South. Chris, Rossella & Emma 🙂
@@SailingBritaly Nah, you did not miss much! Apart from the Belgian coast, Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp, there is not too much worth stopping for... (and that is one of the reasons why I lived abroad since 1994 ... now based in Italy - of course - :-) )
The video description gives more info on the why... I intentionally added a timestamp in the video so that people could skip that section if they wished. We can never please everyone so we just have to do what we think is right. Cheers, Chris
Apologies if you’ve talked about this elsewhere, but how are you managing the Schengen Shuffle? (P.S. I bought a boat following your boat-buying-blueprint. Thank you for that 👍)
Hi Warren, I'd love to hear more about your boat buying journey - drop me an email if you'd like to share more details! As for the Schengen shuffle, I have family in the UK and Italy and no government has the authority to limit the number of days I can spend with my family in a year. Most of these things rely on tacit consent and people not knowing their rights (there is a reason they don't teach people what these rights are in school)... Best regards, Chris 👍
Hi. How did your thru-hull sealing with CT1 go (as opposed to expensive Wika)? I remember you using it a few years ago and wondered if it was still going strong? BTW, how are the Lee Mack impersonations going?
😂 Reminds me of my job as an aircraft technician: "The jet suffered a bird strike." As though the goose had swerved at full speed to hit the 700 mph jet!...
1.65 m in salt water + an abundance of tools, clothes and other stuff, then lower density of fresh water = 1.70 m -ish (with some extra margin built in). Cheers, Chris 👍

Good to see you again Chris and family. I enjoyed the bell part of the video, it reminded me of AC/DC Hells Bells! 😂😂

Very much enjoyed your bell 'detour'. I had no idea that so many had been destroyed. What an odd species humans are.

The CT1 has worked perfectly (5 + years later). Prepping of both the seal and hull by sanding and degreasing is key... Chris 👍
