ADIRONDACK WINTER 46er // Sawteeth & Rainbow Falls

- Sawteeth was a special Adirondack Winter 46er. It was my sons' first winter summit and inches me closer to my ADK Winter 46er. Sawteeth is a great hike through the Adirondack Mountain Reserve (AMR) and Lake Road past the amazing Rainbow Falls to the summit of Sawteeth. We decided to take the Scenic Route down that had great views of Ausable Lake and the surrounding mountain ranges.
We enjoyed a pre-hike meal and beers at Big Slide Brewery and post-hike pizza and club soda at Stewart's on the way home.

So very proud of my sons for their first winter 46er. They stuck it out on the difficult Scenic Route. It was one of the toughest physical and mental challenge of their young lives. I am also happy to say I only have 4 winter summits for my winter 46er (Street/Nye, Allen, & Gothics). Here I come Allen!
I was just thinking I might do Allen this winter... PM me if you need company. I need to break in my new Kahtoola KTS crampons. Maybe Giant this week.
@@RDJim Eric from the video is joining me, Allen will probably be on MLK day. We are considering renting skis to break it up a bit.
The most dangerous time of the hiking season, Ice season... Great job guys....
It was definitely icy, glad webbing is part of my winter gear. We also helped another group up the one steep part with the webbing.

Another great video. Sawteeth was my first high peak and just so happened it was the dead of winter. Discovered what pine traps were. I had no clue what the high peaks were way back then. We skied in and because I was stupid, I didn't bother changing out of my borrowed mother's (too small) cross country boots. So I also discovered blisters that day. Should we look forward to seeing your 46W application coming in this season?
I would definitely like to ski Lake Rd next time. Sawteeth was one of my early High Peaks too, was good to go back. Rainbow Falls was awesome frozen. As for 46W, I have Street/Nye, Allen, and Gothics. I am planning S/N and Allen over MLK Weekend. Then my friend and I are planning to finish together on Gothics this season.
Awesome video! Kudos for taking the scenic route in the winter. My partner and I took that route up last summer, boy was it a hustle! The word “scenic” is a bit misleading, though the outlooks were worth it. We’re also doing Allen, more towards the end of January. Good luck on your Winter 46’er! Love your videos, some of the best ADK content out there!

Awesome video!! Love your channel. I’ve climbed giant and rocky peak in the winter so far, and blue mountain as well (not a 46er but amazing climb w awesome fire tower).
I’d love to become a winter 46er, for me my favorite time to hike is the winter, I love the challenge and the beauty as well. I did some backpacking in Yosemite this summer and although it’s one of the most beautiful places on earth there’s nothing quite like our Adirondacks!!
Luckily I live in Syracuse so I have a bit shorter of a drive than Buffalo!! Keep up the great work, can’t wait for the next video. Maybe I’ll see you out in the mountains sometime!!
Thanks for the great comment. Giant and RPR is one of my winter favorites. The col between Giant and RPR is steep in a couple of places. I have not been on Blue Mountain, I did not realize it had a fire tower. I started at paddle trip from Blue Mtn Lake. Winter is the best, no bears, no mud, no rocks, no bugs, and fewer people...as long as you have the right gear. I agree that we have something special with the Adirondacks.

And yes giant had some seriously technical spots, without crampons and my ice axe I would not have felt safe to keep going. We were trailing a group of very unprepared girls in shorts and lights coats. Needless to say they had to turn around.

@@derekhand7904 nice job, McKenzie is a proper mountain especially in the snow. Definitely compares with a High Peak, maybe harder than some. I appreciate the nice comment, it helps motivate me to bring more content. Good luck on the rest of the Saranac 6, you got the hard one out of the way. Great hike! I’ll hopefully be headed there this winter. I was worried when you said you were going to go down the scenic route. Glad everyone did well. Last time I tried going there it was -23 degrees with windchill. We turned back at the bridge/lake. Too cold to be fun. Are you planning on finishing winter this season?
The scenic route has some great overlooks, but I would not want to do it again in winter, either direction. I am hoping to finish my winter 46er this season. I have Street/Nye, Allen, and Gothics left. The plan is to hit Street/Nye and Allen over MLK weekend and then finish with my friend Tom on Gothics when schedules allow in Feb. I climbed Marshall in -21F at the trailhead. It was cold!
@@OutsideChronicles street and nye are pretty easy comparatively. Anything below -10 for me is bordering on not fun anymore. At least you didn’t sink in any mud on Marshall!
I just found your video 1 min ago and My coworker told me about waterproof sock as. I am a Mail Carriers so I am outdoors 8-12 hours per day and I live in the very cold state. I currently looking for items to keep me warm and dry for the entire winter season. I never heard of waterproof socks but I heard of heated socks which the ones I purchase did not heat my foot. Please respond and let me know what other items you tested to keep you warm when working outdoors. Such as heated vest, heated gloves, heated glove liners and heated pants. I walk in snow all day long please comment.
Thanks for the comment. I have not experimented with any battery powered heating devices. I have had good luck with the Zippo Hand Warmers and have been trying out HotSnapz, a reuable chemical handwarmer. The Zippo Handwarmers work for like 6 hours. The Hotsnapz work great but only has about 1 hour depending on the size. Other than that, I would recommend heavy weight Darn Tough socks.
Great job everyone! Still using the Khatoola spikes? Looks like them. Got some from REI because they were available in store but then saw mention of the Hillside.
Two of us had Kahtoolas and two had Hillsounds. They are both great products. If someone were buying new, I’d say go with Hillsound, they are just a bit more aggressive. But if you have Kahtoolas, I would not say you have to run out and get Hillsound. I’d actually recommend looking at more aggressive like BD Contacts, Camp Stalker, or Grivel G10. But those are only needed on occasion in the Adirondacks.
