Testing out my new 5-head unit for an experimental aeroponic rig...works very well and solid construction; John was also helpful during the research stage.
This is a really old video, but I think I got them on eBay. They don't hold up well in a high humidity environment. That's why we started making the fully encased waterproof fans you can find on our site.
have you ever seen or done a refillable reservoir using 5 gallon water jugs you get at Home Depot/Walmart? Looking around there's no good ready-made options. Have you ever considered making kits similar to this video to sell?
A lot of people use the 5 on/ 5 off timing. Every setup is different though. If you have 30 plants, and are using 5 gallon buckets, you may need 10 min to get the concentration you need. Imo, run it until you are packed full of fog, and then go 5 off.
I'm building a system myself and was curious, does the fog not leak out of the exposed fan hole when the air builds up? And if so, could one build an air tight system that circulates the fog from res to root chamber and back?
I've had customers ask about a closed loop system in the past, but I'm not sure if anybody has done it. You always a little bit of fog either way. The one drawback I see to a closed loop system is no fresh oxygen being brought into the root zone which could cause problems.
They are really pretty quiet already. The Mist Maker is no louder than lightly boiling water. I think the fan is probably louder then the Mist Maker, and it is pretty quiet itself.
It can be hooked to either one. With a smaller mist maker, you'll need to use a hybrid setup though. Here is some info I give all my fogponic growers to help get you started. It's always hard to give an exact model to use, but bigger is almost always better. I always recommend buying the largest unit you are comfortable affording. The bigger units put out the fog very fast, and reduce the required run time, thus reducing your water temps. For 100% fogponic grows, the biggest mistake is buying too small of a unit and not getting enough fog. It has to be very thick. A 6-12 disc unit is advised for 100% fogponic grows with multiple sites. You can use a smaller unit if you have a water chiller (so you can extend your run times) or if you do a hybrid grow such as fog with a shallow DWC or NFT in your case. In other words, the bottom 25% of the root is in nutrients, and the top 75% is in fog. You can use a smaller unit with this method. To get the fog thick, you need to run the fan as slow as possible. The more air you add into the root zone, the more diluted your fog is. I always use the 80mm fan for fogponics. The 120mm is overkill. To get a starting point for cycle times, turn on your Mist Maker and run it until the fog is as dense as possible in the root zone. This is your on-time. Shut off your Mist Maker and see how long it takes for most of the fog to dissipate. This is your off time. This will give you a good starting point for your cycle times. It is hard to give you exact times as every setup is so different. thehouseofhydro.com/fog-blog.html you can find alot more info here. If you have any other questions, just let me know! Hi. I know ultrasonic difussers distort the O2 level in the atmosphere. I had one in myLiving room and it messed up the burn mixture for my gas fire place turning the flame intense yellow orange and no blue. What does the O2 concentration read in the fog box?
This is an uneducated guess, but I don't think they change the oxygen levels as much as the water droplets just taking up space. I wouldn't think the ultrasonics deplete oxygen. I haven't had anyone say they encountered problems based on O2 levels. Typically its people overheating their nutes, and causing depleted nutrient levels in the fog.
We unfortunately don't stock that fan anymore. It was from a different manufacturer and the waterproofing just wasn't up to par. They just didn't last in such a wet application. We usually recommend going with our 80 mm waterproof fan kit from our website. It allows you to get a very slow airspeed, and is extremely waterproof.
Why didn´t you use a 80mm sever fan on the lit instead of that tiny noisy little thing? Due to the way better performance of an cheap 80mm server fan you can run it at as low volts as possible still pushing enough fog while being barely audible. I use a 30x140mm 18W@12V Sunon server fan (100dB@10cm distance; 60dB at 50cm) for my 90x50cm closet and with modern LED lamps, I´m running it at just 5V and I can barely hear it while it still shovels quite some air. Just saying, smal fans are very noisy therefor I would rather run a bigger, more capable fan on lower voltage (rpm) than running a smal, noisy fan on higher voltages.
These videos are quite old... We don't carry the smaller fan anymore. Or smallest fan We currently offer is the 80 mm waterproof fan located on our site. You're correct, it's a much better option!

In another video you make mention that a fogger in a 12 x 12 x 12" container will create enough agitation to push the fog out therefor is the fan really necessary?
I'm not sure exactly what video you're talking about. I would think I was probably talking about a pretty large mist maker. Definitely not a one, three, or five disc. In my opinion, the fan is going to make sure that you get every bit of fog out. Without a fan, you will probably lose a good portion of your fog just because it will re-integrate into the water reservoir if it's not pushed out.
