I should add both brokerage and bank checking accounts are for the benefit of my retirement account. The checking account allowed me to invest in all assets except stocks, bonds and mutual funds which I used the brokerage accounts. I was allowed to do ACH plan to plan transfers from brokerage accounts to my bank checking account and from checking back to brokerage.
Unfortunately, items like education are a personal benefit to you and wouldn't be a proper payment directly from an IRA. IRA funds must be used for investments that benefit the IRA, and you get your benefit through distributions. An ESA however (Coverdell Education Savings Account), is and plan that can be self-directed, invested, and the investment gains can be used to pay for qualified education expenses for a designated child or grandchild. Hope that helps!
Hello Mark and Mat, I listened to you both on RUclips, The right way to invest in a Self-Directed IRA. It was not clearly explained the difference between a Traditional IRA which is set-up by a brokerage company and a Self-Directed IRA setup by Directed IRA Yes, you can have a Trust or LLC checking account for your retirement account. I have a Solo 401K inside of a Trust using my Trust document I was able to setup a Trust checking account with any bank or a brokerage account. Thanks, Patrick.
How to buy CDs with A SDIRA LLC , my custodian does not make this possible. I have also standard Trad IRA and Roth in my own name with Fidelity, but can’t transfer funds from BOA (Where my SDIRA funds are) to Fidelity. Yet it is the same IRA, I have to take yearly RMD on both.
There are some custodians that allow the purchase of CD's in your SDIRA. You want to make sure you speak with a representative that can let you know if they allow your investment types.
my roth is in my etrade account which I manage, is this considered a self directed? or is there legal verbiage that needs to be attached to it to be considered self directed?
Many companies claim to offer "self directed" IRAs. Most just mean you can pick the stocks/bonds/mutual funds you want. With Directed IRA "self directed" means you can invest in private/alternative investments like real estate, crypto, private lending, etc. That is the "truly self directed" account Mat and Mark are referring to.
This sounds great. Can you please help me understand the exit strategies. The IRS expects me to deplete this account before I die. What do I do when RMDs kick in and what happens when I die. Do I just sell off the real estate and or the whole LLC?
Hi Jay, If it’s a Roth IRA there is no RMD. If it’s traditional then yes you have RMD (currently age 73). At RMD age you do have to start taking out some money. For rentals or notes owned by an IRA usually the cash flow or payments cover RMD (rmd is around 4% at first so 100k asset end would be $4k a year). If the asset is not income producing (say raw land or illiquid private fund or stock with no income) you could satisfy RMD from other assets, cash, or even other IRA accounts but if none of those are options you would have to sell the asset to satisfy RMD or you could take it personally as an in-kind distribution as well (requires valuation of asset to distribute out of IRA and then you own personally, taxed on value of distribution).
@@MatSorensen thanks for the quick reply. Yes, thinking about Qualified accounts, and also my heirs. An in-kind distribution would likely put my heir into a painfully high tax bracket, homes are expensive here. No step-up in basis on these investments when I die, so it seems I should spend down or convert qualified accounts into Roth as early as possible. Thanks!
Yes, but it depends on the state where you’re buying real estate. Using an LLC in a state that allows privacy is the best start. My law firm KKOS Lawyers can help sort that out and your options. Also, for IRAs owning real estate directly we have an option to just list your account number is read of your name on the IRA ownership vesting. Call our team at Dirceted IRA on that one.

Great content as always!
Thx Tony!
Hi Mat and Mark, can you trade options in a self directed ROTH IRA or traditional self directed IRA?
Can I use my solo traditional IRa acct to pay for education, not a loan but direct payment towards education

Unfortunately no. That’s prohibited.

You need to be at a provider that allows a Self-Directed IRA.. You can learn more at our site WWW.DirectedIRA.com/Learn

Are there any banks take a SIDRA LLC?
Yes! We actually have a directory of banks that work with SDIRAs directedira.com/resource-directory/
is there any way to achieve anonymity while self-directing and buying real estate?
