- Hi, we are Bec, Sam, Isabella & Euan. After selling our house in the UK & travelling Europe in a motorhome for 10 months, we have bought a derelict farm in Ireland. We are keen to try and live an off grid life, free from debt whilst bringing the farm back to its former glory. We are doing this on a very tight budget and plan on doing as much of the work ourselves.
Please follow along on our journey...we need all the support we can get!
This week, we discuss our change of mind regards layout and we attempt to stabilise the barn walls.

Come on people…..help them by clicking ‘like’! 75% are currently watching and not liking. This is a great channel, hard skilled work, great filming and editing, lovely family, super animals and TOBY! What’s not to like?
YES YOU ARE BANG ON Heather a great channel deserves 110% likes .
I always click like as soon as the video starts because I know I'm going to like it. ALSO, I understand if you comment, You Tube will bring the video to more people. I always comment.
So much effort goes into constant filming and editing! The very least we can all do is LIKE every time you click on. A (kind) comment also helps!
I totally agree that this is a great channel great content, what's not to give then the thumbs up, they so deserve it, as I've really seen some shocking channels that get more thumbs up than these amazing people.
Hit the thumbs up straight from the beginning you will not be disappointed I promise❤😊
I admire your work ethic, your love of family and your persistence. You’re doing an amazing job….keep up the good work. You’ll look back on all your hard work and enjoy what you’ve created with your own hands…your future.
I laughed out loud when I saw all the chickens inspecting the work! I like your change of plan and the idea to have a little herb garden with a stone wall.
right? they're such funny little creatures.
They are so curious. Into everything we are doing just in case there is a free meal in there somewhere. 🤣
I watched Becca and Sam from almost the beginning. It is a joy to watch them and their progress. They are smashing people and work very hard. Love them !
Aww thank you Lise! So lovely ♥️
Sam I think you are an amazing Man, after listing to your story in the last episode I do think you can achieve anything you want as you have a wonderful attitude now to life and your family. I will continue to watch and support your channel. I wish you all the best in your difficult but rewarding build. 🏴🏴🏴🍀🍀
Just ❤️ the way the whole family work together so we'll
I am sure yeah will end up with a beautiful home
I appreciate that! Thank you. Let's hope you are right. 👍💪
These are not a family wistfully dreaming about what could be, this is a family showing others what can be done with hard work, sweat and a just few tears.
Aww thanks. Definitely sweat & blood this week. Luckily no tears. ♥️
Great to see your son helping. Let him help as much as he can and use it as an opportunity to pass on your knowledge to him. Family videos are popular on RUclips
We couldn't keep him away! He is desperate for his new bedroom to be built! 🤣
Recently discovered you after recommendation from Louise and Emily (Campervibe).
Fascinating watching your hard work and progress on this project.
My wife was born on a farm in Bandon, Co.Cork and moved to the UK when she was 3 years old.
Took her there a few years ago to see the old farm house and thought that it would be wonderful to purchase the place and do it up for her but it wasn't to be.
Keep up the good work, looking forward to the next episode.
Aww what a lovely thought Ireland is such a beautiful place to live. We feel so grateful. Such a shame you weren't able to get it.
Love the bonus video and love the new plans. Always thought the old barn could be a fab lounge especially with your idea for a little courtyard. Sam is busting his ass with his work ethic, whatta player. Onward & upward folks, you truly ROCK 👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾
I'm so excited for the courtyard. Sam, less so! 🤣 I'd better start learning how to build dry stone walls!
@@theirishhomestead those ideas you posted in your video were beautiful....do not weaken 🥰
The love Sam has for the family and this work is fantastic
Thank you. We are lucky to have him ♥️
That was heavy work - well done Sam! 🎉
Your dream used to be my dream, but it didn't happen for me so I'm going to stick around to the very end to see your dream come true.
Aww I'm sorry to hear that. You never know what the future holds if you put yourself out there. Go for it. 👍
Hey guys, great to see you both!Agree with the change 100%….much better as a lounge.
What a team you are!!👍
Thanks 👍 Yes having the largest room as the social area definitely makes more sense.
Fantastic channel. I lookout eagerly for each episode. Take care all of you “ including Toby your donkey” l love him ❤
Thank you! Will do! Hopefully, Toby will be on this weekends video. ♥️
Another fantastic video and the Bold TOBY doing commentary in the background.🐴👏👏
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you.
Don't be embarrassed about wearing a helmet. I've had a brain injury and it's no fun.
I don't think he's embarrassed I think he genuinely feared for his life. Really hope you have recovered.♥️
Is it Saturday already? Take care of your back Sam - that's a serious lot of heavy work in a day.
🤣 thankfully, no, it's still Wednesday! The weeks are flying by way too fast right now!
Good morning Bec’s and lovely family 😍 So no nice hearing Toby and how is he 🤔 Mid week video fantastic 👍🏻 Sam working so hard clearing that floor and end walks no wonder he was pooped 🙄 Great that Sam will save those window shutters 😀 love the new changes to. Take care love Stevie xx
Hi Stevie. Toby is doing well, thanks. Sam has really been working his socks off this week. 💪♥️
Nice surprise to see a vlog this morning! You're making brilliant progress. The stonework is looking fantastic. The new plan works so much better and I love the idea for a stone walled courtyard. Roses do so well in an Irish garden. My late Nan's little bit of garden had every old tin bucket or trough from the farm filled with dahlias, geraniums and roses. It was simple but beautiful. Definitely use that old kettle! You'll also notice many front gardens with huge Aran lily bushes. I introduced my 85 yr old Irish Dad to your channel yesterday and he found it really interesting. He was identifying all the old contraptions you were finding about the place. 'Good luck to them' he said. 😊
I'm so proud of you all ... I've been watching you since the first blog .... having had à similar expérience to you in SW France in the '90s with a ruined stone house (Quercy Blanc stones - magic !!!) I have been in ALL the building situations you have experien éd (and many of the heart - searching, doubting, stressing times where challenges have to be met face on) .. 'been there, done it' ... that's why I'm so proud of you 'cause I feel it ..... and, YES, I agree with a former comment (sorry, I've forgotten you name😔 ... you ARE watching out there so for heav en's sake tick the like buttons ... PLEASE ❤ .. Love to all your family, also know that you are understood ....🫠😗🫠
Thank you for sharing that beautiful description of your Nans garden. I can see and smell it now! So lovely to hear your dad wishes us well. Thank him for us. ♥️
Thank you so much. Yes, we have had some very nervy moments recently! Lots of sleepless nights! We know it will be worth it, but blimey, it's a lot some days. ♥️
So nice to see it has warmed up enough to get your winter woolies off. We are just putting ours on, with Temps of 8 and 10 degrees in the morning. Your bedroom walls are looking more and more stable.
Oh lounge, too quick posting.😊
Im so impressed by you and your families determination to find a better life living in ireland.after watching your previous video after your visit to the alchoholic annonimous meeting and listning to your very long journey away from the alchohol and into your hard work the love of your dear wife into hopefully a great recovery.i wish you all the very best wishes and love to your new venture into happiness good luck to your life in the emerald isle❤❤❤Gary
Thank you so much, Gary. It's been a long road and still a way to go yet with the cottage and my recovery, but I will get there. 👍
Becs I too was thinking of a stone trim to the courtyard. So many opportunities to dress it up French style. Ideal design for the new living quarters.
Oh yes I have so many photos on Pinterest! Trying not to get too far ahead of myself though. Got a house to rebuild first lol.
Who needs terrestrial tv when we have your channel.
🤣 thanks. Glad you enjoy it.
You are doing great with concrete pillars but if you have short bits of rebar try driving or drilling them into the existing walls as an extra tie in the original wall just a suggestion but you are doing great most enjoyable for an old builder/roofer with fifty years experience great memories for me.
Thanks, I spent quite abit of time last night fitting lots of rebar with chemfix resin, thankyou for your wisdom it gives me such a confidence boost that I'm doing ok
Brilliant mid week video most unexpected, fantastic work from you guys you both certainly know how to graft!! That vision is coming together 👍🛠️🇬🇧😘😘❤️
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for watching & supporting us. ♥️
You are such hard workers. I'm full of admiration for you and I love your change of plan. It's going to look fabulous!
Thank you so much! I think so too. ♥️
The greatest build I see here, is confidence
Looking forward to following more of this journey to a wonderful, individual home.
Thanks for bringing us along. Kev
❤ what a wonderful comment, and you know what I think you are right too. ❤
♥️ Thank you
Thanks Kev. That's very kind of you & yes I'd say we are getting more comfortable in the build although the walls have given us some serious worries & sleepless nights.
Brilliant work this week guys! Pretty soundtrack too🌸🌸🌸
Glad you enjoyed the music. Thanks
Someone is building muscle on these heavy tasks epic
I think we are definitely getting stronger. 💪
It's getting exciting now! Bring it on!x
Thanks! I am really starting to get excited about the interior plans now. For so long I have tried not to think too far ahead.
Well, Toby sounds like he’s feeling better, lol. Love the court garden idea!
He certainly is on the mend, thankfully.
What a great idea! That will make a beautiful lounge!!!
Thanks. It will definitely be a more useful space that way. 👍
Difficult work but you powered through. Much respect.
I appreciate that. Thanks v
How lovely! A midweek video! Love the music!
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.
596 comments, just thanking people on youtube is a marathon. Bless the work & this precious family time, -that you will all remember for ever! Be kind to yourselves! and Thank you for sharing your story, it inspires and encourages others/me in my similar task of renovating an old cottage.

Thank you so much guys. Toby is doing so much better now.
Like the new plans they sound really good, it looks better and better every week, youre both amazing x
Thank you so much!! I looked back at an old video Euan showed me and we were both stunned at the difference!
Mammoth job, love the pictures of the wall around a cottage, fab idea.
Thanks. I'm so happy everyone seems to love those as much as me. ♥️
What an apocalyptic thunder storm at the end! Crack on, great work as usual.
Yes it was so loud and very intense. We love a good thunderstorm.
@@theirishhomestead me too!
I was raised in a house with shutters. So lovely you are preserving that concept . ❤❤❤❤
In this context I don’t think shutter means the same thing.😊❤
Ooops sorry spoke too soon. Where Becca was talking about the windows that’s was the shutters you were talking about. Sam was talking about a different type of shuttering for the concrete.😊❤
Yes the shutters are one of my favourite things about the cottage. ♥️
Love it! And so glad you brought back the birdsong as the intro! It's unique and peaceful plus even uplifting!
Yes! Thank you! I love it myself
👍👍👍. Thank you
You're welcome 👍
Love the way you are getting stuck in Bec Sam is a hard working lad hope he dose not burn his self out OMG that rain nice to hear Toby talking to you
Yes it's a worry. Sometimes it's hard to get him to stop. Burnout or injury is a real worry.
beautiful. hard work paying off. great to hear toby getting back to himself. this home is going to be stunning.
Thanks so much! Toby is definitely much improved.
Sounds like a fantastic plan guy's, the best of luck, I love watching you all 👍😉🇨🇮☘️Eire
Thanks 👍
Love what you are doing, your work ethic as a family is brilliant.....same weather here in the not so sunny Bury , keep up the good work guys. Have to say I love the music you have on your videos, I find it so relaxing ❤
Thank you! Will do! Glad you enjoy the music.👍♥️
What a pleasant surprise for a rainy Wednesday! Thank you!
Glad you were happy to see an extra video.
To be fair , I was waiting ti hear your change of plan for the old stable coz Lou & Emily told us when they came to borrow your strimmer 🤣 , well done with those walls , great bit of digging there mate
Ha, ha I did not see that! How I missed it I do not know. Thanks John. 👍
Love this new plan! Hard work on these days, for you both and happy to see you're son helping out.
Yes the past 2 weeks have felt very physical. I am feeling it and looking forward to a weekend off.
We'll just rename you "Sam the Digger" since you couldn't borrow/rent one. When you build that cavity in the bedroom, build another next to it and put in a walk-in closet for Becky.
Sam, you've done an amazing amount of work this week. If they don't know what a "poker" is, take heart. I often go into my hardware store and ask for a "doohicki" or a "what-cha-ma-call-it" and then spend at least 15 minutes describing what it's supposed to do!
Blessed Be!
Thanks Abigail. A walk in wardrobe would be great but not sure we will have the space now we are in the small room. Hopefully they don't burst out laughing when he asks for a vibrating poker! 🫣🤣
love the new plan, your bedroom will be really cozy, and a living room looking over the walled herb garden - perfect! well done you guys great episode😊
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. I'm so excited for the walled garden.
Oh, how I've missed the Irish Summers. 🤣😂🤣 Keep up the good work guys. 👍👍
🤣 thanks.
Can’t wait to see the changes we have in store, I have an image in my mind and it’s truly amazing 🤩
Thanks. Me too! It's getting easier to see it as more work gets done.
don't forget the door latches, they really make the cottage, love the idea of the stoned garden, Sam is doing great, with your help of course, and Toby's encouragment;
I plan on a half door or stable door as some call it there. I just didn't find the right photo. I just hope we can make it a reality.
@@theirishhomestead Wow great idea, the half door; I'm sure you'll make it a reality. Dying to see the final result, bon courage
Bonus video! What a treat - if this is the graft from only a few days you guys will be flying through this in no time!
Thanks. It felt like no progress since that video though. The shuttering has definitely slowed us down.
I love watching this channel. What an amazing amount of progress you have made since the beginning and how hard you are working to achieve it. Hope the sunshine comes back soon and makes the conditions easier for you.
Thank you so much! It would be nice to have the sun back soon. Everything seems better when the sun is shining. ♥️
I had to check the day when i saw your video pop up, what a lovely surprise 😊
Ha yes probably threw a few people off! 😉
You're channel is absolutely brilliant thanks guys for letting us watch have a great day
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching.
Toby sounds great, back to his braying self. A few good days of hard work. Then the rain. A chance to rest, conceptualize, plan, order materials or tools. Enjoyed the music and the before and after visual concepts.
Yes he is doing good thanks. Yes the afternoon off was appreciated. Tea and a movie was all we did.
Stellar work Sam. It's going to be an amazing property and unique to you and Becky. Loved watching your progress and can't wait for the next episode. Stay safe!
Thank you. It's feeling like progress is finally happening. 👍
Sometime a change is good as a rest who you kidding your a trojan and working like one good progress and a good work practise crack on
Thanks Barry. We will definitely continue cracking on. 👍💪
Your hard work is really showing now the stone work is beautiful ❤
Thank you so much! ♥️
Really exciting to see whole of ground floor. It will be wonderful. Video quality really EXCELLENT. Congratulations. X
Thanks so much! 😊
What a brilliant surprise video. I’ll be expecting this on. Wednesday now. Ha ha thanks
Ha ha let's not get ahead of ourselves yet Eddy.
Well done,👏🏻 I’d say this has been one of your best vlogs yet.😊The two of you have become so much more confident in front of the camera (far less er ums)and your editing etc is much smoother.I love the way you explain what you’re doing clearly and with humour and without waffling for ages or patronising the viewer, unlike some vlogs I also watch and fast forward in places 😂
I also like that you don’t put fake situations in that are supposedly funny ,you are sarcastic and have a natural appreciation of wryly humourous moments that’s very Manc.I never thought I’d enjoy learning so much about stonework,I’m even inspired to make a raised bed with stones here in Stockport 🙈
Thanks Cathy. I feel very chuffed with that message. So glad you find us normal and watchable. I often compare us to other channels and cringe over my terrible editing skills, but to hear that makes me not feel too bad about our little channel. Much appreciated. Bec ♥️
Wow it looks so different now keep up the great work
Thanks. It's so exciting when we look back at how it was a few months ago!
keep ALL your stone
please do not bury it
its original to the area, you will have other projects when you are all completed, ie. stone walls for your drive 👍
great job
Oh we will not be getting rid of the stone. I have so many plans for it all. Walls, raised beds etc. We still have the big barn to renovate into a self catering let after this too. 🫣🤣
0:13 fantastic job …love what you guys are doing
Thanks. Hopefully the shutter will work. 🤞
I look forward to the galvanised sheets coming off the house!
Me too! 🤣
A midweek treat to see an update. That's a powerful amount of work you've done, it feel like you're leaping on.
Thanks. This week feels like a lot of hard physical graft and more to come on this weekends video.
Well done team.
Thank you. ♥️
Really like the new floor plan, I think it will provide a better flow to your living spaces. Great admiration for your work ethic, dedication, foresight, skills, and the love you have for your family.
I agree. It will maximise the space we have to use as a family. 👍
Well done fair dues . Things get done around your place .
We do have our not so productive days but making the most of the longer days while we can 💪
Just pure brilliant the way you shuttered the wall. I really enjoy you videos
Thank you very much! ♥️
Such a nice surprise to see a video from ye this morning! The house is coming along fab, the work you guys are doing is just brilliant!
Thanks so much! 😊 Glad it was a nice surprise.
Please please please consider underfloor heating, it is so much better IMO not to have pipes and radiators all over the house especially a period cottage like yours. It will look great and the speed of progress is impressive. What your undertaking and achieving is not easy.
Keep it up, wiah I could help.
Kevin m
worth every penny
We have discussed UFH with our engineer and there are a few reasons why we aren't going with it. Time will tell if it was the right call. That being said there is still time for a change of plan. 😉
WOW guys you are doing a amazing Job 🤩 watching from Australia
Aww, thank you so much. ♥️
I love your new plans it will be amazing. And your walled garden will be the icing on the cake . Very pleased to get a midweek update thankyou. Your such an amazing family 😊🎉🎉
Thanks so much! 😊 I am excited for the walled garden. Think Sam is too but slightly anxious that his stone mason skills will be again put to the test.
Well done Sam and Bec
Don't forget to wear as much heath and safety gear as you can
Ye have such great vision for yer home
Brilliant work🎉
Thank you! Will do! 👍
Fantastic job Sam won’t be long now and you can get to the rebuilding stage
Now can’t wait to see that 🤗🤗
Yes we can't wait either. That will feel so much more in my comfort zone.
Sam and family - you’re just so admirable. What you’re accomplishing is amazing. What an incredible result you’ll have when it’s all done. Wouldn’t miss an episode.
Thank you so much! Very happy to hear that. 👍
Amazing work. We moved into a 1700’s stone farmhouse last year, the only heating is the Rayburn in the kitchen and a log burner in the sitting room, there’s no double glazing on the back windows, there are no radiators or underfloor heating and I can honestly say this is the warmest house I’ve ever lived in. Don’t underestimate how much heat stone holds once it’s warmed up - the whole house is a storage heater. Mind you we don’t have any insulation, so that might impact things. We are reluctant to modernise it!
Love the living room ideas and I don’t know if you had a Rayburn before, but you are going to LOVE it!!!
Aww thanks this is great to hear. I'm so excited for my farmhouse kitchen. A dream come true that will be. I really wanted it to be the cosy hub of the house and hopefully that is what it will be by the sounds of it. ♥️
Well done guys! Love the stone/courtyard idea. See how nice it looks with the cottage natural, NOT painted white...I hope you change your mind about painting yours outside. Please leave it the stone---It's lovely!
Thanks. It's such a difficult one as traditionally in Ireland they were lime plastered. We plan on leaving it stone though and seeing how it goes
The Irish Homestead is one of my favorites! Everyone works so hard and I’m able to see your vision for the projects completion. Great family! Love the variety of projects. I’ve learned a lot! I’ll be around to see the finish!
Aww thanks that's lovely to hear. Much appreciated Nicholas
Love the idea of the new lounge, the door ways with new lentils would look great as glass windows, lots of warm light to warm the room up. Well done😊
Yes it was important for us to add as much light in as possible. Hopefully it will also increase the light in the kitchen too. Thanks b
Remind yourselves often when days get hard- the deep satisfaction of job well done, visible, real progress, family together pitching in, good sleep from tired bodies, caring for each other to fuel yet another day... The structure is looking SO good, & change in lounge position a great plan. Good stuff 👍👍
Thanks! Love your user name BTW! Yes there is definitely a lot of tired, falling into bed situations right now. 🤣
Clever to concrete the corner gradually from the bottom working up ... if you box right up then pour it in from the top the pressure of the liquid concrete often blows out the bottom boxing/shuttering/formwork
Yes Sam was on it with that as to be fair I'd have done it the other way and probably stuffed it up.
That's back breaking work, I see Toby has found his voice.👍🇦🇺🇦🇺
Yes he's a bit more like himself again now thankfully. But he is definitely quieter at night which is great for everyone 😉
@@theirishhomestead Maybe Toby can have a friend soon.
Some jobs are transformative, this has definitely been one of them. A lot of graft, but worth every shovel!
It sure is! Sam is feeling it, but the drive to renovate this place is strong. I think once the stonework is done we can breathe a sigh of relief.
The outside walls are looking so lovely and your suggestion of a curved wall will be so lovely. You are doing so well.
👍
Great idea to switch around the rooms, it's going to be great!!!! And Sam, as for you being lazy in the winter and using oil, no one could ever accuse of being lazy. You are such a hard worker, both you and Rebecca continue to put so much into this build. Well done guys, keep up the excellent work
Thank you. Mind you this build may cripple me and oil will be an easy option as opposed to chopping logs. 🤣
Hi, that's the great thing about plans they can always be changed when better dreams come along. Keep up the great work.
So true! And are likely to change again 🤣Thank you
Your courtyard dream will come true, look what you've done so far! My goodness that picture is everything I've ever dreamed of in a garden, to look that way! Much love from Oklahoma USA Jackie 🇺🇸💖
Thank you so much Jackie. I just hope I can recreate it. 🤞♥️
Lots of Irish cottages had half doors, you should consider one in the kitchen as the back door or even in thecsitting room. Very traditional and you can have the top half open on nice days without worrying thst every cat, dog, chicken, donkey and other will wander in.
Oh yes I definitely want a stable door on there! That had always been my dream. A stone cottage with a stable door! I'll be in heaven.
Hello Toby, Hello Mr Rooster 🤗 Some exciting plans ahead! You are so close to having one connected building. Fantastic progress with each day and then the rain! ♥
Luckily the rain only lasted a day so we are still on track. I cannot wait to knock through into the kitchen. 👍
@@theirishhomestead I'm soooooo looking forward to that moment too!!
Wow a double side wood burner would look fantastic in thoses two rooms
Your idea of a stone wall and a courtyard garden sounds lovely. It will be a great addition to your home.
I think so too! Just hope I can make it a reality.
It's so exciting to see your progress, and this week you've really done a heck of a lot. Just make sure you take decent breaks. If you go too hard and fast, you'll run out of steam, and then it'll take a while to get going again. The chickens are obviously the site inspectors, and Toby is the CEO 😂
Thanks Clare. Have to admit we are already in bed! Today has been a lot of graft on the shuttering. I'm sure I did 10 concrete mixes today. We are done in! I think a beach holiday is in order 🤣
OMG what an ending to so many days hard work i love your Ideas / Dreams it will be beautiful just like your nature Bec and crew xx.
Aww thank you David. ♥️
Bloody bestest channell everyone ,i absolutely love you lot sam bekka n kids n toby cant wait for more video, thankyou for a wednes mornin watch ,greatttttt xx
Thanks so much that is so nice of you. ♥️♥️
Sam and Becca, been watching from the beginning. Each video is better than the next. Very hard working and great progress each video! Keep them coming…and thank you!
Thanks so much!! ♥️
Family that works together stays together. ❤ Thank you for sharing!
I hope so. We are much closer as a family since we left the UK. 👍
Wow! Well done! It's exhausting work, but you'll be so happy with the end result 💖🏆
Yes! Thank you! Cannot wait for that day to come right now. Its been hard graft today. ♥️
