The explanation of why Daniel didn't raise at the end of the hand was so concise and made a lot of sense to me, so I really appreciated how he logically explained why there wasn't value in raising against 48 possible hands that beat him, as any weak hands would fold anyways so there would be almost no value to be gained. I appreciate how he can explain things in a broken down way so I can follow along with his reasoning.
This series, after every episode, I say to myself... THAT was the best one yet, and then along comes another one and now I have to say, again, THAT was the best one yet. Loving them all, thanks so much for your time young man.
It feels good to get the logic behind those decisions right. Instead of just dumping the knowledge, I thank you for asking those questions and giving us the time to think about them!
This hand is a great example of why me and most other poker players are never going to get close to your level of play. You gave clear insight into a great amount of depth of strategy and background study to get to this hand in this spot. Even beyond your normally high standards. Thank you for sharing Daniel.
Daniel the knowledge I'm learning from you I took to a local Tournament yesterday and took first place out of 43 people $100 buy-in..........YOUR THE REAL GOAT
Makes total sense every step of the way. I've seen a few of these now and it seems evident that Daniel really did play pretty much a perfect tournament. It's one thing to understand the theory, but to be mentally present every moment over an extended length of play would exhaust a lot of people and they'd get sloppy. The top players don't just have smarts, they also have mental stamina.
Hey Daniel, you've knocked this breakdown video out of the park! I'd say you definitely got great value out of top set. However, of course, your hand wasn't the nuts because of the 48 total combos that have you beat on that board. It was crazy to think at first, why not raise with the Queen on the river. But your explanation of value betting and what calls a specific raise certainly helped clear things up for me. And of course, you got blockers! Also, your previous breakdown video on spot bluffing and chip defense was super helpful. Having the confidence to bluff in certain spots and range bullying is a particular skill that I am currently working on. I'm going to use these strategies you have explained to help myself in future tournaments, both local and the WSOP this summer. Thanks man!
Thank you, Daniel, for sharing your knowledge with us. Haven't played poker in a really long time, but your passionate approach to the game and creative delivery brought me back to it. Keep up the great work.
Daniel u cant believe how much i have learned from these episodes. We can't thank u enough for this. Don't listen 2 ur wife u can share everything you know😂. Bless u and ur family❤
I swear these videos have done as much for my game lately as any other resource -- he really has a gift at making the complex accessible. And @daniel's wife don't worry, none of us are ever going to replicate his speed and accuracy. 10/10, as always
6:41 With high and low straights, sure I'd bet that. I mean what happens when the King comes down and he pushes all in? That's what just happened with Nik Airball vs Berkey, when Berkey had a set of sixes. Berkey lost $275,000 or w/e in a cash game. Straights and flushes kill sets.
first of all i gotta say i really enjoy these hand breakdown videos. I just had a question about the pre-flop, (without knowing the specific ICM pressure) don't you just 3-bet, call the 4-bet and fold to polarized sizing on A high flops/turns? And also is it not better to mix up the ranges on the betting side instead of the calling side, so you don't value cut yourself on big hands? (Where you would sometimes 3-4 bet 89s k10s or other marginal hands). Rest of the hand was played to perfection though. Really nice call only on the river.
Really wondering if Nicky P mixes in a semi bluff of his AQ top pair and bets 2x pot if you can realistically call considering how much of his range has you beat
Hi Daniel! Been a fan of yours since I started playing 14 years ago and I'm even a friend of Pastor Dave out here in AZ! I do have a question, wouldn't it also be beneficial to check raise on the flop to avoid that potential tough spot that happened on the river? Draws of any kind have me very cautious when I flop a set.
I would say that the 285k kinda represents half of what you might’ve raised if he instead had bet 100k so in essence, he sort of did your raise for you anyway without you having to worry about losing too much if he did have AK
Yup, that's another good way of looking at it. The amount of value I want on this river is about pot size, and since he already bet it, the job is done. My hand is valued at pot, but beyond that, all of a sudden a set shrivels up on that board. If I raise to say, 625k, my hands doesn't rate to win any longer if he calls
on the river, if it's hard for Daniel to find bluff hands and a check raise would look like heavy value, and an under bluffed spot, wouldn't that be a great spot to bluff a hand like 109s? middle pair that blocks 89?
dwann really helped Dan's game. He really took his beating on high stakes poker positively and simply improved. Many of the old school players cannot survive today. Dnegs is probably at the same level of Ivey now and in some ways has exceeded him. Ivey a better natural player, but daniel has all this new funky math stuff down.
Hey daniel I've got a quick question about limping, could you accomplish the same mix by mixing min raising and say 4x or larger raises in a similar way to accomplish what that mixing limps and raises did during this tournament
What about an over-bet lead on the river? Is that fishy enough to generate a bluff catching call? Or is it not worth the risk because he always has AK in his range and you don't so he can rep the nuts with a raise?
So when you choose to overbet you are really polarized towards the nuts or nothing. The issue here, is because I didn't 3 bet preflop, it becomes far less likely that I can ever hand the nuts (AK) but it is a much bigger part of his range. If I overbet the river, a player of his caliber may recognize that and raise me with a hand like K5 or A5, blocking AK. Not saying he always would, but if you overbet JJJ on that river and get raised, it becomes a fold and that would be painful!
I wonder if Daniels blinking tics provide information when he looks at his hole cards...some serious blinking going on when he saw them Jacks...mind you it wouldn't surprise me at all if he was aware of it and takes steps to avoid giving information to a long time 'live game' opponent
I still agree that raising the set of Jacks on the river is a bad play, but when evaluating our bluffs don’t you think we could’ve turned a pair of Tens or smaller pocket pair into a bluff? Those hands would x/c flop, check turn, check river. That gives us a little more reason to x/r the set of Jacks because it gives Villain a little more justification to call with top pair. But again still probably not worth it.
Awesome knowledge as always! I'd love to do a video where we roll up on a 1-3 table and after we shock everyone with your presence we offer them $ to stay and play you for a bit. 😅 It be like poker meets Mr. Beast. Maybe have crazy stipulations and side bets. SEO 🚿 thoughts.
No offense but why in the name of everything that's holy would he ever want to do that? To give back? He does that already w/ his WSOP vlogs and offering people ops to buy his action at no mark up. Sorry tworocksdonkey but you are drawing dead on that absolute terrible of an idea. I have an idea that's just about on par with your idea- Why don't I pour pigs blood all over myself and jump in a tank filled with great whites, or maybe I'll practice my tennis swing and a asian hornet's nest. I oughta...!!!..** Come on, Mush, you'll have better luck betting on Kryptonite to win in the 4th at Aqueduct Racetrack.
Hey Daniel, love your content! Was wondering if playing as close to gto as possible still works for low stakes games with friends, where people play more unpredictably and with a wider range. Keep it up!
GTO will always work, it's not exploitable, but it is suboptimal at low skill games, you should exploit the (obvious)weaknesses of your opponents rather. Also, no human on earth is capable of playing GTO.
I understand why a raise on the river would not be a good play for value. But as a bluff, what would the criteria be or some good bluffing candidates to check-raise that river to fold out some of those medium hands?
No, it is not a good spot to check raise bluff... I'll give you a second to figure out why.... He will have the nuts more often than I will. His range is much more weighted towards AK than mine.
I like watching these on mute and then playing them back with volume to compare my own hand analysis to Daniel's and get all giddy like a little school girl on the rare occasion when my analysis matches his lol.
You have so much to teach all ages of players, ur knowledge of the game is appreciated. Whether watching U at the table or on ur RUclips channel, content is valuable. Like, better the look on the last frame...hair and beard has a more youthfulness to it. Over 70 here, and working on this matter... looking elderly for such a young, energetic...? Not me! Appreciate U second to Doyle. As a poker enthusiast... My knowledge has increased in diet and exercise as well ... been on a health kick for 2 years now the Mediterranean diet since February. Working out has become my new job since retirement started. U have stayed consistent and opened new avenues to go down. Want to B playing Hold Em at a WSOP series table with U. Def raise with the JJ.... Usually have great insight Dan but you are cooked here. You only really lose to like 2 hands here, feel like you lose value whenever you wouldn't reraise 2nd set on a board like that. You lose to 4 hands, and can fold if they raise over the top (possibly).
I really don’t think Daniel will be fine with going genuinely broke lol he’s a poker pro: he’ll always have that itch to wanna win big. It’s one reason why he’s successful
Daniel I shit you not, I was in the same situation two days ago. I was playing 2-5 at my local casino, already down a bit and I got pocket Jacks, best hand I’ve gotten all night. I raise from the the BB and get 3 callers, probably because all night I was getting caught bluffing or showing bluffs. Anyway, flop is J 10 3, I bet and everyone folds except the UTG+1 player. Turn is blank, I bet pot he calls, river K. He checks I bet, he doesn’t snap call, no flushes or boats were available, he thinks for about a minute then calls and shows AQ.
Daniel is always so generous with his time and knowledge. A natural teacher who's passionate about the craft.
Not to mention...... his ability to remain relevant in the world of poker. One of the few pros out there that made his money from poker. Most do not
I love the game and truly enjoy seeing people have huge learnings on ways to fix some leaks

This video, and the discussion about the River check-call, is excellent.
Im curious to know what if after river card Petrangelo would go All in (selling AK or K9 for example) what would be Daniel reaction
Same here. Almost certain he has to fold. Which is crazy.
I would assume a Broadway wants to get paid so wouldn't go all in

And now I'm left wondering if Nicky P won the very next hand when he got AQ again.

If you aren't raising this river then you simply can't have enough bluff check raises
Since you don't have many nuts, you don't need many bluffs. You almost never have AK here so you don't need to raise ever at that size.
