What do they eat?
As their name suggests, leaf-cutter ants cut pieces of leaf. A large colony of ants can strip a tree of leaves in just one night! But, they don’t eat the leaves. Instead they take them back to their nest and use them to grow fungus which they then eat.
Where do they live?
Leaf-cutter ants are found across a wide area in Central and South America. These ants construct vast nests in which to grow their fungus with thousands of chambers connected by a network of tunnels.
The colony
In each colony there is only one queen who is the only ant in the nest able to reproduce. She may produce 150 to 200 million offspring in her lifetime! Colonies can be up to 10 million ants strong. According to their size and shape, ants fulfill specific roles such as workers and soldiers.
Predators
Most ants in a colony will help defend the colony against attack but there is a special soldier class with powerful, sharp mouth parts who will attack large intruders including humans!
