Been looking for someone commenting on some of the shots in this scene. He does NOT seem in control of that kick and the no-handed cartwheel flip kick from his facial expression and the way his weight is shifted. It was like watching your Grandma climb on her chair to stand up on the table... Holding your breath in tense anticipation of the fall inevitably coming any second. Especially watch his forearms - they're all tense and rigid trying to make it seem like his fists aren't clenching toward his upper chest. Not surprised at all he clipped him, but why all of the slo-mo showing his awkward lack of balance and awareness? I know he famously insists on doing his own stunt work, but definitely can tell he wasn't fully comfortable with certain shots yet when they did these takes
@@strikerbowls791 I agree. It’s part of what makes this series great and different. They don’t need a lot of quick cuts to distract you from an obvious stunt double. Makes it feel real.
@@MyKittyPercy @Striker Bowls Not my point. Kudos to Tom for doing his own stunts - and yes, at this point in time, Cruise = Hunt essentially. I was just saying from my experience, having been in Taekwondo for most of my childhood and teen years, that he did not seem comfortably in control of a couple of those kicks (albeit the 2 most difficult in the scene), so the fact that one of them accidentally landed a hit doesn't surprise me. Correct, they don't need a lot of quick cuts to distract from an obvious stunt double... I prefer actors that perform their own stunt work because it shows a dedication to their craft and willingness to learn new skills. Well Tom did clip him in the face. Not only does his expression give it away, but even more is how awkwardly his weight is shifted around. His hands and forearms are all clenched tight and even though he's doing a flying side kick, he is leaning so far back his momentum is in almost the entirely opposite direction. Also when he does that no-handed cartwheel flip kick. Being in as many years of TKD as I was, you start to notice more subtle variations in body balance and where the center of gravity is shifting... can come in handy when reading an attack or knowing where to best counter hit. Ironically, I'm a pretty big pacifist nowadays but then again one of the tenants of TKD is that is for self-defense only.
