David - years ago you told a story, on one of your Twitch streams, of knowing a Japanese paper maker. Would you ever consider telling that story again for your RUclips channel? It was an awesome story and I loved hearing you tell it. I’d love to hear it again.
I don’t remember that one off the top of my head, but I agree! I want to hear any of the stories that he’s willing to tell and archive here. I think more access to stories like those is a wonderful thing. Especially in today’s world where so much story telling is a fast, flash in the pan type type of content on reels and shorts. Not to say I think those are all bad per se, but I love that David’s videos are longer videos. It feels like bringing the old and new together. Yes, it’s a RUclips video archived on the internet. But it feels like sitting down with a person who has lived far longer than me in a life far different than mine. Just a chance to slow down, learn, and experience.
i think we're all in agreement that David could tell any story and we would be waiting for the notification. "David Bull describes the time he clogged a toilet at a dinner party: 1.2m views."
I went to visit this exhibition earlier this year after getting into Japanese prints precisely because of this channel. Now mokuhankan are producing these very same prints. Full circle! Thank you so much Dave!
I recently visited your shop with some friends, I was the one who bought the "cheap thrill" and the hiroshige! You tested me on the eight veiws depictions. I just wanted to leave this comment to say thank you for your kindness while I vistited! I hope to visit you again soon before I leave Japan. My friends will tell you I was truly starstruck after meeting you! Can't wait for the next video :)
I just realized that this channel technically falls under the Lost Media genre (which I like) and Dave and his Mokuhankan team are taking their steps further by recovering, preserving, and reviving precious lost art so they can be appreciated by today's and tomorrow's generation. That being said, I'm absolutely looking forward to this project!
I'm not sure it was ever "lost" 😄😂 The old publishers are today publishing contemporary woodblock prints of very high quality e.g. Adachi or Watanabe. Hundreds, if not thousands, of artists are today self carving and printing, many at higher quality than 100 years ago e.g. Tachihara Inuki (ukiyo-e) or Miyamoto Shufu (shin-hanga) or Paul Binnie (contemporary).
As a student of Japanese art and a professional carver, I appreciate your knowledge and explantion of various aspects of woodblock prints. I obtained an excellent volume comprised of drawings by Hiroshige of everyday life some of which were projected to be part of a print. I share your love of this wonderful discipline. Your passion and love for the art will shine forth in any project you undertake. Best wishes from Virginia, Cork Camden
We are watching a legend carving his way into art history. He will be up there, among great ugiyoe craver and printer, as a modern revisionist who brought so much joy to the world. Gentlemen, ladies, subscribe to him as if u are given a chance to subscribe to Hokusai.
Dave I can not tell you how much I look forward to your videos and stories. I glad to see you are doing well. Best wishes for the holiday season from Charlotte, NC.
There's nothing better than seeing someone, who is truly wholeheartly passionate about something, sharing info about it. I watch some of your videos fro time to time and it fills me with joy. In a world so full of "everything" and that moves so fast with technology, news, apps, etc... and where people tend to be a little lost about what they like becouse they have too many options out there, it certainly is nice to see someone so passionate, well versed and meticulous about what they love, specialy something so artistic. Thank you so much for sharing, for taking the time to set up the camera and record and for letting us know and learn about a technic that may be difficult to know about living in countries other than Japan. (Excuse my English, I'm a Spanish speaker) Blessings and lots of love from Argentina!
Firstly, it's wonderful to see you happy and well Dave. I think this project is so interesting, you've always represented a bridge from the past to the future. You're a programmer, but found woodblock carving. You're using modern technology in your process, but documenting techniques that haven't changed for hundreds of years. It's really fascinating! I wish you and the whole team nothing but the absolute best as always ❤❤❤
Great challenge! I'm sure you and your team will pull this off ☺️ By the way, thank you for documenting your work the way you do: not only is it very enjoyable to watch, it's also a valuable source of information.
He’s back!! I’ve missed your videos so much! Hope you’ve been doing well! :) can’t wait to see what videos you bring to the channel next! One of my favourite creative channels on RUclips!
This is such an amazing project. I am definetly looking forward to seeing the results. Much love for you and your staff's passionate work on bringing beautiful works of art like those into as many people's hands as possible and moreover turning them into a new expression of artistry in the form of your wood block prints themself. PS: highly appreciate the little tidbit at the end ^^
Es muy bonito el arte que tu haces amigo david, mantente joven, saludable para que puedas seguir mostrando este muy lindo talento. Abrazos desde colombia.
It was wonderful coming to the shop and picking up my little bonsai print!... you really are in the thick of it there in Asakusa... terrific. I was really inspired to see Hokusai's paintings when I visited Obuse too together with his amazing Pheonix in Ganshohin temple. It was a wonderful story to hear how he walked to Obuse from Tokyo. Looking forward to walking along with you as this series rolls out.
I was looking at your channel last night to see if there was anything new that I may have missed!!!! What a pleasant surprise to see a new video today!! Glad to see you doing well Mr. Bull! Can't wait to watch this series
I am so happy you are producing another series on RUclips! I can hardly wait to see this project come together. Thank you for sharing your work with us.
I am so excited about this project! David and your team, you are the only ones in the world who can pull this off! Looking forward for the upcoming updates, loved the whole Hokusai Great Wave series 🧡
Such a pleasure to see you in a good health, David! Your stories and craft are kinda safe heaven in todays crazy world. Greetings from Russia, hope to visit you one day in your shop 🙌🏻
Dave, regarding the audio....I think it's just the echo of the room. Perhaps putting the mike higher up on your shirt will help. In your Twitch stream, you are looking down a lot and the mike picks up your voice perfectly. I think in this case, it just needs to be higher. Otherwise, there's nothing terrible....we just love your voice so much that it's the only thing we want to hear!
Wonderful ! this is fantastically exciting ! Looking forward to seeing more videos and ... the PRINTS !!! Good Luck and thanks for making this possible !
I WANT one of Mokuhankan's prints. The next and first time I'll be visiting Japan I'll buy some and hopefully see you! In the meanwhile (beeing a student with no money for luxorious prints) I'll try to make my own prints instead. I have carved my first ever woodblock print on some plywood! The block is all bendy and not suitable, but it actually worked and i have a print of the keyblock!! Next is color 😁 Thank you and your community for beeing awesome and sharing your process and visions! 🥰
Enjoy these videos so much. I hope you are in good health and cant wait to see some more print videos. Happy Holidays, wishing best of health to you and your family.
Thank you! I am very excited for your new project and the videos--the Great Wave videos were wonderful as I waited for my prints! I'm looking forward to more challenges and discoveries in your next adventure, including seeing the staff and neighborhood again!
Ahhhh man! Was just watching your video on The Meaning(s) of Life last night, and wondered when you'd release something else. My prayers have been answered!

He should do the story about the block maker/planer as well

Love to hear it

Everybody gangster until Sensei Bull drops another vid!
That’s amazing that you’re collaborating with the British Museum, congratulations!
Never clicked faster!
Probably never found that one special porn from the past 😂
I can't stress enough how much I love following these series of printmaking. There's nothing like it, and I'm glad you share it with us all!
And all of a sudden Im really interested in this random topic that youtube showed me😊
I went to visit this exhibition earlier this year after getting into Japanese prints precisely because of this channel. Now mokuhankan are producing these very same prints. Full circle! Thank you so much Dave!

David is one of the youtube GOATs, every video is so good
You have spent a lifetime studying, practicing, trying to save a beautiful art form; now, you've become the treasured.
Just seeing David’s face makes one happy without reason. Great news of my day is this. New video 🎉
This is amazing news! Can't wait to see the end result (and of course the process)
Wouldn’t normally respond like this. But let’s f**** go, really stoked for this

aw that's so sweet. I like that you went to his memorial. I look forward to getting this subscription!
David, I have every confidence in your team's ability to complete this project wonderfully.
Dave I can not tell you how much I look forward to your videos and stories. I glad to see you are doing well. Best wishes for the holiday season from Charlotte, NC.
As a Canadian this must be even a bigger deal for you! So excited for you Dave! Can’t wait to get my hands on one of these!

Exciting news! It was a pleasure and a privilege to pop in a few weeks ago when in Tokyo and be able to say a quick, "Hi".
It was wonderful coming to the shop and picking up my little bonsai print!... you really are in the thick of it there in Asakusa... terrific. so happy to see you again!
So good to see a new video from you :) Hello from Canada.
Wooohooo! I saw the Hokusai exhibition of these drawings at the British Musuem - so exciting to imagine twelve of them as finished prints
Dave, regarding the audio....I think it's just the echo of the room. Perhaps putting the mike higher up on your shirt will help. In your Twitch stream, you are looking down a lot and the mike picks up your voice perfectly. I think in this case, it just needs to be higher. Awesome news Dave 🎉❤
Can anyone explain the festival and floats at the end of the video? I’m afraid I’m not well versed enough in Japanese culture
Ahhhh man! Was just watching your video on The Meaning(s) of Life last night, and wondered when you'd release something else. My prayers have been answered!
