    Nice job.
    Nettles are actually pickable and strippable without gloves if some care is taken. While most of the plant contains stings they are concentrated on the leaf edges. Leaf upper and lower surfaces generally do not sting and the stem stings very little. I usually strip base to top with a pinch action. Garden varieties exist known as ornamental nettles which bear no stings at all but still produce cordage grade fiber
    Occurs to me that some folks could have allergies I guess, I take a few hits per stem but it often fails to get me through callus.
    Fantastic plant, makes a great green tea and can be substituted for spinach in any recipe. Packed with iron

      Great information is always welcome. Thank you for that. I always thought the reason why they have stingers is because they're about the most nutritious plant in existence.

      Hi, I've been settling into my new life after retiring from running a nature preserve and am currently working on going into bow making full time along with getting the tech and learning how to really amp up my production quality so hang in there.

      Hi, time to get back into bows. These lower tier woods fascinate me; making a working bow out of something people usually overlook.

      I have a good patch of nettles so my next one will also be 100% natural. Maybe chokecherry.

    John, the strands are shorter than normal for a full string. You did say "added fibers". Could you do a video putting this nettle string together? I know how to make a flemish by hand, but would be interested in seeing you add strands to increase the length. Or, on second thought, being on RUclips, I could just look that up, too. LOL

      I have to wait until my nettles get taller but that's a really good idea; how to add fibers and keep a consistent diameter. Thank you for coming up with that.

    Good video John. I just posted a short video of my Mollegabet bow build I'm making for you.
    It's certainly not going to be as good as you can make, but I hope you will enjoy it a little bit as a little gift from me. It will still be a few weeks easily as the really difficult tillering and final wood removal will begin soon. Once I'm out of work for the summer, I will be able to spend more time on it.

      Oh man, Joe, I'm looking forward to it. Please sign it. If you know anything about me, know that there's no reason to put yourself down as a bow maker. The spirit of bow makers puts us in the same place; there's a big measure of equality and your bow will mean the same to me as any other working bow.

    I wonder if a thick 60 grit sandpaper would take off the stingers help you get through first layer? Probably but your gloves work just fine looks like. So why make it complicated, Cause I’m me…lol

    • @johnjriggsarchery2457
      @johnjriggsarchery2457  Год назад +1

      You make me smile. I've tried 60 grit but for some reason for me, I can remove wood faster with a good quality 80 grit on a soft sanding block.

      @@johnjriggsarchery2457 yeah you make me smile yo with your inuendos, N the relationship u can create through video, m I didn’t even need acting lessons cause o think you r the type of person that is the same McDonald’s and a family event it wrong n wedding, You are one, I have achieved this as well. Feeling like I have to put on a different face or behave a certain way. That is rare in this world. Wonder if u could get seeds from Osage, black locus so I can plant on my property, I researched it, Apparently they will grow and survive. I’m just looking for different medium. And thinking bout future bows that are going to be crafted. I’m waiting for bear season to harvest some guys to use as a string, as well someone teaching me how to brain tan, Cause I owe this guy some leather brain tanned, N the amount I had was not a full deer more like baby goat. The rest are commercially tanned but nice. Plus surprises, Only needs little correction but shoots great I will sign it, Then you can shoot me an email no tell me how many stars I get. Learning how to serve a string now as a result of Japanese bow. Knocking it and making arrow more secure as I use thin strings maybe 12 strands. Made a beautiful scalloped long bow and added the Penobscot design after my poundage was to weak that fixed it right up. So many different ways to string it, but finding the way that shoots the best will be a process. Take care hope to meet you soon.

      Love Manitoulin Matt
