- Agricultural robotics and artificial intelligence are changing how we farm, from day-to-day practices to selecting new crop varieties. In this talk, Katherine James gives an overview of how agri-robotics is changing the way we interact with crops, how this will change the crops themselves and, ultimately, how this will allow humans to focus more on things which require the ‘art-of-being-human’.
Katherine James is a computer scientist whose research centres on machine vision solutions to biological challenges, spanning both the agricultural and conservation sectors.
She grew up on a farm, spent a lot of time behind the scenes in a natural science museum, yet was always curious about figuring out how computers work. Perhaps, from this upbringing, it is not surprising that this led her to a project where she is trying to describe plants using machine vision technology. She is currently pursuing her PhD at the University of Lincoln in high-throughput robotic phenotyping. She values science communication and has been the recipient of two conference awards, published several academic papers and been involved in teaching in various capacities.
Through her research, Katherine is working toward creating intelligent robotic systems that will help to facilitate better robot-crop interactions on next-generation farms. Katherine James did a great job of explaining how robots can be used to improve efficiency and reduce waste in agriculture, which will ultimately lead to more sustainable and affordable food production.
One thing I found particularly interesting was the discussion of how robots can be used to help farmers make better decisions about when to plant, water, and harvest crops. By analyzing data on weather patterns, soil conditions, and plant growth, robots can provide farmers with real-time insights that can help them optimize their yields and reduce waste.
Another area where agri-robotics is making a big impact is in the area of food safety. By using robots to monitor crops for pests and diseases, farmers can catch potential problems early and take action before they spread. This can help reduce the need for pesticides and other chemicals, which is better for both the environment and human health.

Reminder : it exists fantastic (ancient but more and more reused) methods of cultivation that absolutely don’t need electricity, chimicals or huge water quantities. And guess what ? You feel so much healthier when you eat these kinds of fruits/vegetables.
When are you gonna focalize on people who are working on these realistic methods, tedx ?

Long-lasting change comes from little steps, repeated regularly, over time. The little things you do, as tiny as taking a sip of water or stretching more often or going for a walk. These all add up to something much greater than the sum of their parts.

Mas obrigada mesmo, porque me fez perceber tantas coisas do que via no passado, o que vi no desenrolar da vida e o que percebo agora com relação a comida, plantações e as mudas… sou tão grata ao agro negócio… eu tenho tentado tanto plantar sem muitos sucessos… o trabalho e árduo. Imagino que tec no agro deve agregar e não substituir, se for por este propósito creio termos uma boa combinação no campo!

I'm sure there are some cool things that this accomplishes, but more technology isn't always the answer. Newer tech isn't always good or better than existing, more appropriate technologies like the ones used to grow food for ages, before the introduction of industrial agriculture. Humans need connection to the land and to their food. Both are already sorely lacking and I don't think widening the disconnect with technology is healthy for any of us. What we need is to decentralize food production and get more people the time and resources to grow their own food in their own gardens or in community spaces. There is so much more potential benefit that way for better food, healthier people, closer communities and greater sustainability. I guess it's not as good for the profit of tech companies though....

interesting technology but the question is who will do what with it? So far, for the last 100 years, man's ever growing use of technology in food has not done well. We have created food that is nutritionally deficient. tasteless, and heavily contaminated with harmful chemicals all the while damaging our environment. If the people who use this technology use it to give us BETTER food, that would be a great thing.

My diet consists of zero plants, so I don't care about agri-robotics.
I'm sorry, but I don't understand how having robots phenotyping plants would allow humans to have more time for humanly things. As a species, we've become so far removed from our biological needs and requirements that this is somehow seen as a "success." The reality is that there aren't enough humans willing to farm anymore due to the ease of technological jobs. Is the natural progression of humanity really being fully dependent on robots for sustenance? I think not.
