How nice to hear you say out loud that it’s okay to mix styles as long as they are cohesive in some way. What a huge relief to hear. That takes away all kinds of stress for me. Thank you, Valentina. ❤

The personal items and the emotion that accompanies them really do make a house a home. You've blend styles seamlessly. Watching your videos has really helped me to do the same in my home. I've (finally) gotten to a point where I'm being more intentional about what items I bring in to my home.

I have sculptures and artwork in my home that my kids made when they were young. I couldn't sell them for one cent, but they bring so much joy every time I see them. I don't care who says they "don't fit my style," they will ALWAYS have a place in my home.

AMEN! Our treasures are what make our house a home! ✨ Along with a little “curating”. 😉 And thanks to you and your sweet and funny hubby…and *Nick* (he talks about your channel now and again, ya know), I feel SO much more confident in my “un-style” - which I admit is totally intentional - I just act like it’s not. 😂
Oh…and Valentina…I like to listen to you and other RUclips channels when I’m driving (LISTEN, not watch!) and yesterday, I was thinking, if ever there was someone who SOUNDED like she was smiling, while talking, it’s you. You are so full of joy, and I just love listening to you - and watching - when I’m not driving, lol. 💖

I could never understand how my Mom and Grandmother could decorate their homes ONCE and then never change it……NEVER! I wish I could do that but I can’t. Maybe they were that way for two reasons: they lived through the Depression and WW2 and they maybe didn’t have the money. I admit that I don’t follow trends because they come and go too quickly. I think you should decorate the way that makes you feel good. It doesn’t matter if no one else likes it. My exterior architecture is English and I’d have to say my inside decor is English classic with contemporary thrown in. Books, my own photography, and my grand piano are my key ingredients . I decorate with those always in mind.
I also decorate with items I buy in my travels .
Thank you for your videos. I always learn something

So glad to hear you talk about the value of having interiors that are personalized, with mementos, family pictures, heirlooms, etc. Never thought I'd hear you say "a little clutter is ok." Good! Also, I like the idea of supporting local artists and craftspeople -- shopping only HomeGoods is rather bland and uninteresting.

I'm so glad you have changed your mind about photo frames, Valentina. The photos in them tell a story of your life.
Again, though, it's knowing how to display them correctly. Everything in moderation. 😊

  • @sandiwillis3171

I’m so glad you are encouraging infusing your home with the personal things. I have struggled with this and felt I was being rebellious by including my collectibles in my spaces. My husband and I have lived abroad and travelled also and this is a part of who we are. We feel joy and pleasure when we see these things that represent times of our lives as we move through our home and that’s what matters to us. I try to display these things tastefully so they aren’t clutter and they have a chance to stand out. Sometimes it’s a challenges to put together African artifacts along side European culture pieces and Native American pottery but that speaks to not being a slave to a particular design style, so eclectic is my style. Thank you for validating that.

  • @firestick4991

When it comes to “clutter,” aka personalized items, I found that regarding scale helps in finding good homes for these items. For instance, small sculptures or art pieces. They may be too small for a large coffee table, but perfect nestled amongst indoor (maybe outdoor) plants or on a small table, grouped together with other small objects of similar scale, or in groups of three in various heights. Or mirroring identical items, if you have something in pairs.
Large scale objects are sometimes good in smaller spaces, ironically.
Color grouping with similar colors also works when trying to decide what to do with personalized or sentimental items.

I definitely struggle with liking multiple styles! I'm also so glad to hear that you're adding in some personal pics of kids, etc. I've always felt kids are the best "works of art" and pictures of them (not in excess of course) make our home ours.

    • @Heyu7her3

Also HUGE to hang kids' art as art pieces for the home! A lot of these "DIY" art pieces on RUclips look terrible & bland, whereas I'd rather patronize my child's art _(if I were a mom)_ or a local student artist. It just shows you care & appreciate artistry!

Love your videos. Your home is simply spectacular.
You give me great inspiration for my home.
My question is about your style. You said your home is 75% Classic, but I see your home as more Modern with
Scandinavian and Contemporary influnce. I thought Classic equals Traditional.
Can you explain why you said 75% Classic. It will help me greatly to understand the different styles.

If you want to display photos, but the colors and sizes are all over the place, try printing them out as black and white photos, rescaling the sizes to be more uniform, and using identical frames and matting to present them. That makes them more cohesive to display.

Val tysm for your perspective. Good to hear that clutter is not really clutter if your heart and soul are in it. In the same vein, it would be good to understand what “acceptable messy” looks like. Especially what does a messy room, bed or kitchen look like in Val & Jack’s home!

Thank you for affirming a home needs to reflect our personality and using items that speak to us individually. I have a few treasured items from my family I cherish such as an antique clock, a radio from the 1940's, and some quirky lamps.. the key is restraint so it isn't a mishmash of things. Decorating should be fun. So looking forward to more videos on this subject!

I’m still a firm believer that if you love everything in your home it will all go together. But I disagree with the “you will find a place for it” idea. Just because I love something doesn’t mean I get it, I also have to budget it in and know exactly where it will go and how it will be used. I’ve gotten used to acknowledging that I love some linens, or a vase, or whatever, and then walking away because it just doesn’t fit my life right now.
And I’m so happy that people are recognizing the value of personal items again. The difference between a house and a home is the dog toys, kids art, vacation mementos, family photos and the stories behind what was chosen for the space.

Yes, I agree. Love your discipline and looking at the whole room before making a purchase. I adore ornamental designs but realised if I only buy patterned items there’s nowhere for the eye to rest. Valentina has taught me the value of plain textiles and seeing the value of looking at the room as a whole instead of a collection of individual items. Have a great day!

*Evolution of Style* . My style has definitely evolved over time. Stage of life, income, bones of a house, all of these factors come into play. Deciding upon a cohesive color palette was a huge game changer for me. I love warm and earthy. Another thing that made a huge impact was finding the right balance of masculine and feminine pieces. I have found that I lean more towards rustic masculine but I love my vintage finds and there are some lace doilies around. Lighting would be another area that I feel can have a huge impact. It all takes time and I would much rather spend my money on quality items that bring me joy and thrifting has worked out great for me.

Any videos on where to start on a starter home? I’m overwhelmed looking at paint colors but after one of your videos I’ve decided to sample 3 whites. The only exhausting thought is that I’d have to do samples on the ceiling as well as the walls because I’m in a big Crest toothpaste tube. Walls and ceiling throughout, toothpaste color, I had hoped it’d be painted by now but things come up financially like new appliances etc. Do we need to start with window casings and blinds first since there are no casings and most of the blinds don’t open and shut properly or only hold up crooked? Or painting one room at a time is okay and just do touch ups later? I’m wondering if blinds would make a better impact though since they’re tan wood-like blinds and I want white with nice curtains one day. Or just paint the ceiling and then work on windows? Overwhelming. And it’d still be a mostly empty house with a dining set and a couch. I buy candles and fresh small bouquets occasionally at least for my kitchen to lift my mood.

I tend to trust more taste than style. I also consider a space and it surrounding. For instance, when we move in our new apartment situated in a 70´s building, I knew that contemporary will resonate (a chalet style, would be out of place 😂) and I progressively replaced some furniture in that sens. I can add some classical pieces, some ethnic ones, collected with time, as by their uniqueness they bring contrast. It is different of what we are experiencing throughout social media, as it has to mature.

    • @fionaschiffl8065
      @fionaschiffl8065 8 месяцев назад +1

I started buying some decor a few years back only to find that minimalism is in. Ugh. Then I found that everyone has a clutter threshold and that every house, room, shelf is treated like a container and can only hold what it holds on Dana K White’s channel. The Clutterbug channel is all about looking at how you organise and the four ways people use based on whether you’re a visual or hidden, macro or micro organiser. These two systems are life changing. I’d love to see Valentina’s take on clutter too.

Our home is 12 years old now and some of it (including the cabinets!) fell out of favor soon after we built. They are traditional and cream and white and gray came rushing in, I think, before our home was completed! When you talked about cabinets, I was like "That's me!" It's such a major item to change and I don't think I hate them. I think, more so, I hate that they're considered "out of style." We contemplated having them painted or refaced, but I just cannot justify it yet. Thinking maybe new counters/backsplash, sink and hardware could help. If we change the cabinet style, we'd have to change our railings, crown, island legs, etc. Where do you stop? Not sure, so I haven't started!

Long story short, yesterday’s therapy was about decorating! Now that I’m decorating I’ve been getting anxiety about it. Growing up in undecorated houses then living with a hoarder made me think I didn’t deserve a decorated personalised home. In the last few weeks I’m noticing excitement building in my soul as it’s coming together. Biggest challenge is changing the mindset and Valentina is my Yoda encouraging me to go for it! Change your thinking, and you change your life. Spiritual gurus advise us to use visualization where you imagine the end result of what you visualized, your dreams. Also, make a vision board of what you want by cutting out photos and placing them on your vision board no matter how far fetched it may seem. You'll be amazed at how the universe will be bring you things and people to help you get there if what you visualized is what you really want. And write down your goals and the kind of life you want to be living in a certain time frame, whether it be a year, two years, or five years from now. Know you can succeed!!! Good Luck!!! I'm excited for you!!! 👌🤞

I found myself wanting to move to escape triggers and memories, but recently I was able to recognize that this is my home, my family’s home, the we should not have to leave our home to find peace and joy. So, I am decluttering and redecorating to reclaim my home and my life for this to be a place where we can enjoy being together. I wish you all the best on your journey.

@@rachelturner8286 Rachel, thank you! So glad you’re on a healing journey too and creating something new. I can so relate to trying to escape the triggers and bad memories to do with the family home. My kids are grown so I’m free to focus on me and transform my home. I’ve decluttered over the last 8yrs. It feels weird and naughty putting up art (mainly made by me) but it makes me smile every time. I have a space in the lounge where I dance like no one’s watching. I also wish you all the best to enjoy life, home and your family. I reclaim my home by doing Wonder Woman twirls in every space that my ex-hoarder occupied. As awful as old pink carpet is, it’s cool to see metres of it uncluttered. Sending you a Wonder Woman twirl and a hug from Australia.

The struggle is real with feeling like you have to choose 1 style. As I’ve watched your videos; and you expressed this perfectly in your recent video on the other channel you showed how every part of your home has a feeling of a place you have lived or you love. Your master bath is very different from your kitchen, but your home is still cohesive and blends beautifully. Thank you so much for the insight, and inspiration! ❤❤❤

Wow . . . your cabinet company saying that kitchens go completely out of style every 7 to 10 years!! That's a LOT of landfill. We gotta do better than that, especially when we think about all the incredible natural stone extracted from the Earth that's destined for a trash heap in Biloxi ten years later. Ouch.

It's not just you! I struggle with liking SO many things!! I would say my most loved style is transitional. But I love trends too. I LOVE French country too! Always have.

Hi V, wow this is a happy change of opinion from you, I remember you saying you didn't have photos out as you didn't like the way they looked, sort of messy or something like that I think but your family is so beautiful they'd look great as art! I really struggle with loving so many styles and trying to blend them, I loved this video x

Thank you for saying "the struggle is real!" I love so many different styles and trying to seamlessly incorporate them into my home more than often becomes challenging. Watching you do what you do so well, helps me to attempt to do my home justice. You make me smile & laugh and you help me to try things that I would otherwise maybe not have attempted. Thank you for being your authentic self! Your channel is a joy to watch! ❤

I have lived in 5 countries and visited many more, I love to display the things we’ve acquired these 40 years living abroad and raising our family. It makes great conversation and brings back so many memories😊

We have lived in the USA, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil and now Paraguay. We lived for 24 years in the Amazon jungle with a monolingual indigenous people and ran a medical clinic. No access by road, so we travelled two weeks by canoe or 21/2 hours in our Cessna to get to a town. I worked with linguistics and education teaching tribal peoples how to read and write their own language which helps to preserve their culture. We raised our family in the village completely off grid. It was a wonderful experience for all of us . Unfortunately the politics of the country made it impossible to continue.

One of the trends I've really enjoyed (from this channel!) is adding more greenery to my decor. It makes such a huge difference and with the great faux floral options out there now, it is truly hard to tell from real and I don't have to water any of it :-)
