I've gotta suspect it was something to do with the actual dolphin researcher(s?) who had sex with actual dolphin (the sex wasn't supposed to be part of the research and when people found out they were very much in trouble). Interesting story about Tim McGraw: when my sister was born before Christmas, she and my folks had to be flown from our military base to Vanderbilt in Nashville due to complications during her birth. She and my parents stayed at the hospital over Christmas away from me, my other sister, and my nana. They were there for some time until she was well enough to come home, a couple weeks at least. However, on Christmas Eve, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill came to the NICU to deliver presents to the children and their families who weren't home for the holiday. My parents met them both, and they were very kind and generous. :')

Spoilers: The Animorphs end up having to involve David by happenstance because he (long story short) gets his parents taken and house destroyed by mind-controlling murderous aliens, and instead of being a helpful part of the team of heroes, he's a coward who almost gets them all busted and killed several times, then ends up murdering one of them (sort of) and trying to kill others. The heroes ultimately decide to trap him in rat morph forever and ditch him on an abandoned island to live out his days as a rat, because they decide it's kinder than killing him. (Unfortunately that's not the last they see of him, either.)

Some notes to answer your questions:
In the rat book, they morph into rats to trick a rogue Animorph into morphing a rat while in a trap so that he gets stuck in morph for the rest of his (short) life. The “screaming rats” bit Karina says at the end is in reference to the fact that they leave him on a deserted island and fishermen report hearing screams coming from the island sometimes. He comes back in a later book and begs them to kill him instead.
In the caterpillar one, that morph is definitely not advantageous. Cassie does it to prove to a yeerk, one of the parasitic alien villains, that she would rather live as a blind, helpless worm like them than force a living host into slavery. The caterpillar morph acts as a bit of a deus ex machina, as it saves her in the end when she turns into a butterfly and resets the morph counter.

There are discussions of chemical warfare and genocide, and none of these poor tweens come out of it free of PTSD or with a clear conscience. No, Animorphs pioneered the use of computers morphs. Sure, there were earlier covers without them, but they actually created software that would blend between two images, and started using those for later covers. I'm sure they were touched up, but they weren't created from scratch.

"Long shall he live, the student who owns his dinner, but the student who owns his wine must perish."

"You can take the word out of the ray of sunshine, but you can't take the ray of sunshine out of the word."
"As soon as you forget how to wear him, you forget how to terrify him."
"Paying a guy to live like a robot is the definition of traumatizing."

To be fair, he also tried to murder them all. Its a messed up situation, but the inverse was being dead and humanity being doomed.

I've always been confused about how serious and dark the Animorphs books actually got. For whatever reason, grown adults read some of these stories, looked at each other, and then decided to make a silly looking transformation from a young human to an animal with no context be the cover.

@Ian Rose the cover artists definitely didn’t read the books. They got maybe the blurb from the back cover, probably a few guidelines from the publisher, and possibly some examples of covers from earlier in the series.
      I
Despite growing up in the 90s, in the glorious peak of Scholastic Book Fair era, I have never read an animorphs book. The covers disturbed me too profoundly.

@@LupineShadowOmega he only betrayed them because his entire family was murdered and the Animorphs immediately adopted him into the war as a soldier. Though they didn’t have much choice, unlike the disabled children they actively recruited and used as cannon fodder to distract the enemy while they prepared a sneak attack. I believe that culminated in the genocide when Jake ejected a few billion yeerk civilians into space but that might have been later.

Oh no, Julia mentioned the caterpillar one D: That one scared me when I was younger, because that girl was trapped as a caterpillar because she was like put in a glass or something and couldn't change back in time? So she had to live as a caterpillar and turn into a freaking butterfly before she was able to change back to human D:

@@obviousalias132 If you see feet mentioned in the bible it means literal feet nothing else. Feet washing was done because most people wore sandels and their feet would get covered in dirt and dust so they would wash them or have servents wash them when they entered a house.

Episode idea: each host picks one of their own personal/off-show/pre-drawfee works and describes it to another artist, and then compare the results (kinda a combination of the sketch artist challenge and drawing fanart of each others work, plus we get to see off-show art)

SO The story about the girl turning into a caterpillar is actually kinda sad and that's why I remember it. One of the girls (Cassie, I think) gets overwhelmed with her new powers and is convinced by someone she thinks is a friend (but isn't) to transform into something small and insignificant so she can escape. She passes the two hour time limit as a caterpillar and her other friends freak out since it's the first time any of them dared to be so reckless. It ends up working out because caterpillars have a natural transformation which manages to reset her two hour timer once she becomes a butterfly, so she is able to become human again and everything is fine.
As an adult, it's kind of a silly story, but as a kid, it was actually traumatic.
