In June 2016, a once-in-a-generation hailstorm struck the small city of Darwin in Australia’s Northern Territory. Better known for its hot and humid weather, the first June thunderstorm of its kind in 20 years discarded 62mm of rain and “pea-sized” hailstones on the Red Centre. The NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services assisted by Bushire NT volunteers, responded to 86 calls. Two large storms that followed the initial hail dump brought many trees down causing power outages and building damage.
Desert Life Church has been a dependable community fixture for over 40 years, serving and ministering to the Darwin community, and unfortunately, could not escape the damage. The church suffered partial flooding and roof damage, the stormwater infiltrating the inner sanctuary of the church as a literal wall of water, damaging electrical wiring, expensive equipment, destroying the carpets and compromising the structural integrity of the building. The damage was estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Pastor Ben Teefy speaks of the process of the church’s insurance claim through ACS Financial as being a blessing in disguise. When the storm struck on a Friday afternoon, ACS had an assessor out at the facility over the weekend, assisting the church with recovery and assessment of the damage.
