    As someone on the autism spectrum a big reason I personally dislike movies like riding the bus and fanatic is because it enforces this stereotype that disabled people lack any abilities to take care of themselves, basically turning them into large children. Forest Gump never upset me in this way because he was a perfectly capable person, serving in the army and becoming a ping pong champion, the movie focused on his achievements more than his faults.

    • @Brianna-eo8nu

      Also, one thing that I think sets Forest Gump apart is the way they frame Forest as a protagonist. The movie throws him into a ton of crazy, almost folktale like situations, yet through t it all, forest is just… some guy. He’s the everyman the audience can identify and relate to. By framing Forest as the everyman in this wacy world, it helps humanise him and his disability.
      Unlike most special needs oscar bait, Forest Gump remebers the “person” part of “special needs person”.

    fun fact: this phenomenon goes back as far as the 60s. There's a movie called Charly, about an intellectually disabled man who undergoes an experimental surgery to make him smarter. It makes for an interesting plot, but the actor playing the main role won the Best Actor oscar that year for a performance we would now see as stereotypical a la The Fanatic. It's a TOUGH watch.

    • @cliffarroyo9554
      @cliffarroyo9554 4 месяца назад +23

      Not really Oscar bait. Charly was based on a short story then novella "Flowers for Algernon" which a.... whole lot of American jr and sr high school students had to read at one point. It was a prestige product. I think even Forrest Gump wasn't Oscar bait as such (again based on a famous book and praised for special effects as much as anything else when it was released). I think of Oscar bait more as obscure original screenplays intended to provide a 'showcase' for an actor (think Nell for Jodie Foster).

      If you want to go back a bit further, Walt Disney really wanted to get an Oscar for casting a black actor in Song Of The South, eventually convincing them to give the black actor an honorary Oscar.
      Not being disabled, obviously, but that was a pretty blatant attempt at race-baiting to win an Oscar.
      Going back earlier, Best Picture used to have two categories with one being the popular choice among the public, the other being what the academy decided was the best. I think they ended that early because it came across as "This is the movie that stupid people think is the best, and this is the movie that smart people think is the best."

    Not only does it fit in the WWII setting where the Oscar Bait supposedly takes place, but it also takes a jab at those that exploit marginalized groups (such as disabled people) while using unintentionally offensive terms and phrases.
    Thereby it doesn't feel like it's overused for cheap shock and offense factor like a lot of other portrayals saying words as such.

    Showing all the audiences of the world crying their hearts out to the screening, and then you got Tehran laughing till their ribs hurt 😆

    I would actually trace the trend back to ‘Children of a Lesser God’ in 1986 where Marlee Matlin won for playing a non-verbal deaf person. It was pretty daring, but it paid off.

    I don’t think you can ignore the writing that these fake films are parodying. Yes the actor gets the most attention, and that’s somewhat intentional, Ben Stiller is playing the actor, but in American Dad they focus more on the fact Tearjerker also wrote and directed the film, it was his bad concept and bad writing that I believe, even more than the acting, makes the role distasteful. The character he’s playing is just a series of stereotypes and that’s on the writing more than the acting, and I think that’s the case, to an extent, in the real films you referenced as well.

    I find it genuinely hillarious, and fitting, that Tropic Thunder has aged so beautifully.
    Even better when you remember that Ben Stiller's character , by the end of the movie, became a better person and actor by letting go of his ego and treating roles like Simple Jack with the respect they deserve.
