I totally agree on the mental health vs agency bit and I have one thing to add which is: accepting help is a huge factor there. Like sometimes you really can't take care of yourself, like you need someone to get you started on recovery, especially if you're really physically weak. But if you can't set aside your pride to take someone's support, its like what you were saying, that part is on you

I was 20 in 2004. (England pre internet) Nearly all my close friends were total nutjobs in one way or another. Drugs, drinking, partying, vandalism, dropouts, squats etc.
On a fairly regular basis one of us would loose our shit and do something off the chain. Mostly with the harm turned inward on themselves, or taken outward and smash up anything breakable objects nearby.
We all had an acute sense that we needed each other to hold us down before we exploded, or help pick up the pieces after the fact. No deeper judgement was really necessary as the person more often than not was their own harshest critic, and just needed what they already knew reaffirmed.
We had music to help calm the savage beast, the only thing that worked for me incidentally.
Since a lot of my friendship group have had kids or atomised for other reasons, things have got worse for them as individuals. We've lost our main source of stability, which was each other.
I miss that solidarity immensely, even now. I miss helping my friends, I miss laughing at ourselves and our shortcomings, and I miss the those 3-4 day sessions where we could all transcend our bullshit and have a perfect day together.
Love and violence. "Suffering is pain without love." Spot on.

I get where you're coming from, but I had friends like this and the pushing of boundaries can get uncomfortably physical to the point where it would end up with us throwing hands. The part where you talked about the popcorn on the floor, that's what stuck to me. It's great you thought it was funny and cute but these types of gestures in friendships can escalate into them doing some nasty things if you don't call them out on it. It seemed like Twomad was one of those people that just liked pushing the envelope, and not in a good way. Had a buddy who liked to tickle me, and he ended up doing it while I was WEIGHT-TRAINING. I don't usually get mad, and it's pretty hard for me to get angry, but I was furious when he did that during a deadlift. When I got physical with him, he still thought it was a joke. This is the type of personality I see when I view someone like Twomad. Can't say I feel sorry for him.

9:24 How could we reward people for expressing themselves better ?
I mean, disorganized thought are entertaining and they allow us to project meaning into them, ourselves and see things that may or may not be there.
There's value is partial organisation, see Jackson Pollock paintings (presumably) or even pareidolia.
With that said, organized thought can be dry, boring, redundant, tedious, obvious, artless.
In the case of this person, who is chasing clout, fame and other sustenance. As long as they get brain reward chemicals, the feeling of progress and sustenance, why would they have gone for ordered thought ?

    • @shodanxx
      @shodanxx 6 месяцев назад +2

      The Vile Offspring
The question of how to reward people for expressing themselves more clearly, especially in the context of digital platforms where disorganized thought can be both entertaining and lucrative, is complex. It touches on the broader issue of the incentives created by social media and the kind of content that these platforms promote.
Firstly, it's important to recognize the value in all forms of expression, whether organized or disorganized. Artistic expressions like those of Jackson Pollock or instances of pareidolia where we see patterns in randomness, serve important purposes in culture and personal expression. They evoke emotion, provoke thought, and can be deeply meaningful.
However, when it comes to personal expression, especially in cases where someone is experiencing mental health issues or is in a vulnerable state, the value of coherent communication cannot be understated. Clarity in thought and expression can lead to better understanding, support, and potentially life-saving interventions.
To encourage more organized thought in contexts where disorganized expression is being rewarded due to its entertainment value, several strategies could be considered:
Creating Supportive Communities: Platforms can foster environments where clarity and depth are valued. Communities that encourage meaningful discussions and provide constructive feedback can incentivize individuals to express themselves more coherently.
Educational Resources: Providing resources and tools that help individuals learn how to organize their thoughts and express themselves more effectively can be beneficial. Workshops, tutorials, and access to mental health resources can empower individuals to improve their communication skills.
Highlighting Diverse Content: Platforms can make a concerted effort to showcase a variety of content types, including those that feature well-organized thought and deep insights. By diversifying what is considered valuable content, platforms can broaden the definition of what is rewarding.
Incentive Structures: Rethinking how rewards are distributed on social media platforms could also play a role. If algorithms are designed to value not just engagement in the form of likes and shares but also the depth and coherence of content, this could shift the incentives for creators.
Mental Health Awareness: Increasing awareness about mental health and its impact on communication can foster a more understanding and supportive environment. Recognizing the signs of someone struggling and providing avenues for help can make a significant difference.
In the case of someone chasing clout or fame, the pursuit of brain reward chemicals through social media validation is a powerful motivator. To shift towards more ordered thought, the individual would need to see clear benefits in doing so, not just in terms of social media metrics but in their overall well-being and personal growth. This requires a cultural shift both on and off social media platforms, where the value is placed not just on what is immediately entertaining or engaging but on what is meaningful, supportive, and enriching.

7:15 schizophrenia is NOT *preventable*. It is TREATABLE. It's thought that the earlier you can notice and start dealing with symptoms the better prepared you can be to deal with episodes, but if you're schizophrenic, you are schizophrenic and will be for life (so far in medicine). and as it starts it continue to get worse up until your personal "level" of it.
Ofc people have episodes of it, kt's not at 100% always, some are more severe or aggressive they can go from connected to reality to a paranoid mess, but I just really wanted to clarify to people that yes it is *treatable* with medication, but it is NOT preventable, it is not avoidable, and there is no cure for it. A very sad thing.
If you're finsing episodes of paranoia about other people, the government, spying on you, hallucinations both visual and auditory in your early teens to mid 20s, go get that checked immediately.

The situation felt particularly poignant to me because I remember everything that happened with Etika in 2019 and I could tell that Twomad was heading down that same path. I personally related to Twomad because all of his actions on twitter reminded me of my own: the attention seeking, pushing the envelope and all the mania. I recognized all the cries for help because it was some shit that I would do. For the first time I felt like someone else was going through the same things I was going through and it made me reevaluate my behavior from another perspective. When I think of him, I see a deeply flawed, scarred, hurt and insecure individual that needed the internet to feel any semblance of happiness, no matter how artificial. I'm not defending his shitty actions, but I think he could have had the opportunity to atone.
Seeing people actively celebrate his death was sad.

He’s a very interesting character, aware and articulate but lacking in some fundamentally felt meaning in a way that ultimately killed him. Also has some reflections on young fame and delusion in some interviews I believe.

mhm fr. i'm really going through this myself recently. i think this is really hard to grasp for people who've never experienced it themselves (or maybe someone very close to them did... maybe). even for me, you know those tiktoks and videos of people cleaning the home of someone who is or has been extremely mentally unwell, like the really really bad ones? i've never been that bad, so it's hard to truly understand how someone could live in those conditions and let it go that far. but it surely tells you something about mental illness.
i'm not familiar with artchad, but he seems to have the standard jordan peterson, american conservative type of view. which i don't think is inherently bad. helpful for some, no doubt. but when we talk about mental illness, and very debilitating ones at that - like schizophrenia, major depressive, bipolar, and so on - it's a whole different thing. i'm glad to see you and some comments point this out, because this "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" mindset i find to be harmful sometimes. it makes you feel even worse because you can't to those basic things, even tho you know they're basic, and used to be so easy, but yet you can't, even if you want to or even if you try but it doesn't help.

I mean. Idk i feel like his mental illness, and addiction issues play so much of a bigger role in his death, than internet fame or him feeling he needed to be a spectacle.

This shit happened to one of my uncle, he went psychodic and getting arrested before he really would have fucked up is probably what helped the most (he got an unregistered pit bull and all), but in a country like the USA where judgment is punitive rather than restorative, I don't think this would work very much
On one hand I believe we should arrest every drama youtubers doing shit like chris chan documentary and throw away the key because they are the internet fuel that are causing this, on the other Twomad was a grown man and those are the people who have the freedom to make their own decisions, you can't help someone who doesn't want to be helped and will make up any excuses to consider themselves a lost cause
It's a cautionnary tale that this shit can happen and happen too often than we might think, I've known so many people starting to act weird and psychotic and die within the following 5 years

Notice how bunch of RUclipsrs are about twomad but they don't care about your uncle. The only reason these guys give a shit is because too mad was in the public eye. They don't actually care about people.
I don't trust a single word that comes out of Jreg's mouth when is persona for years and years was based off of not actually knowing what he believes. He speaks out of both sides of his mouth to get attention. This man is a fucking sociopath and no one can convince me otherwise.

    • @ClemiHW

@@Nagasakevideo I think Jreg mostly cares because he knew twomad and tried himself to get involved, he mentionned it in another video that he kind of tried to nudge him in the right way but i do agree there is a lot of survivor biais in what he is saying on the matter. This illustrates pretty well my point that he had several people who were willing to help that he pushed away.
His mental state does explain a lot but doesn't justify anything either. The sign that really disturbed me was seeing my uncle, who used to help me pass hard level on tony hawk, completely lose the mental ability to play videogames and not even realize it. Twomad was still out there playing videogames and streaming shit, he was a grown man who was still able to make logical decisions too, and it's those decisions that led him to die
Honestly the fact that after his death, the first reaction he and others people got was to not mourn the person he was, but rather open a discussion on the person he could have been is enough to make me realize they're aware it was nothing much than a life wasted on hatred, self isolation and internet brainrot. That's just some Dear Evan Hansen shit

12:30 "when someone is being an objectively bad person, and the fact that they're being a bad person is a direct result of their mental illness, what do you do?" Thats a good question and a very very hard one. My personal opinion, comes from the level of both the severity of their illness, and how self-aware they are of that illness, and whether they can be reasoned down to reality from that episode. If there is absolutely ZERO reasoning with them to reality, coupled with them having zero self-awareness that this may be a dysfunction in their connection to reality, then that person is a definitely highly potential danger to themselves and people around them at least temporarily. Because you have no idea how they will respond to any stimuli, no matter how big or small.. also guy on the left, at 13:40 says this guy had SIX different burner phones so he could continuously harass this woman and gey around her blocking him (textbook stalker behaviour) and you then say 'oh but that's not indicative of someone with enough mental oeganization to "DO" something? I'm sorry but areyou insane? He has the oegganixayion to buy and operate six burner phones and stalk this woman, how muxh more organizational skills do you need to hurt someone? Which stalkers usually escalate to eventually?
I'm not shitting on your friend, or his loss, I'm just hearing some wild and quite honestly uninformed takes those with really serious mental health issues

Glad someone else pointed this out. Also the comment about getting multiple messages from an unhinged man not being a big deal…seems obvious to me he (tucked shirt fellow) doesn’t have many close relationships with women. Men who behave like this kill women. It’s terrifying to be a woman and have a man go to such great lengths to keep contacting you and harass you, because often this leads behavior to stalking, physical assault and murder. This is not a dramatic twitter take, It is a fact.

I think it was the pressure of societies malignant super-ego compelling the both of them to conform to standards that were not their own through avenues similar to sweet baby inc.(who i'm sure you'll defend) that ruined them as well as many others. I'm sure other people, including the two I just mentioned, have felt that way about religious social authority and not just about secular authority. My point is; I recognize secular and religious authority as two arms of the same beast putting people through unnecessary stress and putting the blame for it on "the other" instead of on authority.
