So very glad that keyboardist are realizing the value of these great instruments. That unmistakable Hammond sound breaks on through to the other side.
A great vid that demonstrates why the M is a capable combo organ stand-in for its bigger B-style brethren. With a street price rivaling a few Happy Meals, you can chop it, mod it, add a Leslie and take it on the road without sacrificing any of that iconic Hammond sound. Toss in foldback and a competent bass amp, and you can laugh at the console snobs all the way to the bank.

Thank you for doing this video. I bought a 1960 M3 with a Leslie 145 because of your advice and analysis. I had the seller put in a 1/4" out kit on the leslie connection and now I have an awesome set-up. I use the 1/4 out through a tube amp to get that Jon Lord Growl...sing SMOKE ON THE WATER with me!
😎
Hi, what tube amp are you using?
What many people don't know is if you set the vibrato depth or the vibrato/chorus selector tab half way(in the middle) you get a vibrato unique to the M3. & with one of tabs (I believe the vibrato/chorus on/off tab) if you set it 3/4 of the way off you get a chorus that sounds almost leslie-esk. Problem sometimes with the latter is keeping it in this position, but I had great luck with it for 3 years, until I got rid of the M3.
Fantastic video. I was just gifted a M3 today from a dear friend and this video has really helped me understand the characteristics of this beast.
Thanks for sharing this.
Your voice is so Soothing I listen to this video to help me fall asleep. Your really relaxed with your tone and your whole swagger if you will.
I've plugged in a Laptop Hammond vsti clone to the RCA input on the M3's volume pedal and now the clone plays through the Leslie. It's easy to use the clone to replace the missing low end keys on the M3. This combination is incredible. Thanks for your help!
M3 - $400
Used Laptop - $250
vsti software $50
Leslie 145 - $700
Connection kit $150
For $1500 I have a REAL Hammond...beats paying $2500 for the New Hammond Clone!
That sounds interesting!
Nice Job. I have seen many M3's for cheap these days and since the B3 is way out there in price range The M3 looks better and better every day !
I used to play a M-3 for a long time. What i really liked about it was the bass - it didn't have vibrato in the bass like the B-3 and to me I could make it sound more like a bass guitar. The M-3 also had a little slide switch on the volume pedal that would hold the bass pedals in a long fade until another was pushed... really good for making them smooth as you go from one to the other. I added a device of two rotataing knobs on the right lower panel that duplicated the presets of the B-3.
I had a B3 and was on the road, gigged without for 10 years. There is no better sound the B3, it's the standard. With hand trucks and the organ it weighs 475 lbs. That is alot to move around and unless you have people to move it for you, it can be alot to move around and for rock or blues, or jazz, you really only half the organ. The M3 witch I have weighs 245 and it has just what you use on the B3. You don't have the presets to quick change sounds but you can adjust and with a Leslie 122 or a 147 you basically have the same sound
@angelissynth Yeah, the title says "features and functions...". It is exactly what it says it is... a video of the features and functions. Frankly it's a wonderful tutorial and I love it.
Thanks a lot for this!
I am new to organs and thinking of picking up one of these, and this was a really informative and clear overview.
Great video. Very thorough and helpful. I appreciate it! I'm thinking about purchasing one...
For years M-3's were being given away, just take 'em! even now. I picked up 2 in the last 5 months..like it used to be with the PINTO automobiles. If it wasn't for the county, I'd have 2 dozen of each..with Leslie's! (hooked up to my in-dash 8-Track player). That demo shows that the HAMMOND sound all by itself is as close to having a Leslie hook-up as many of these modern digital boxes; although it seems that instrument has had an electronics face-lift, crisp and fresh as it is. You can tweak connections and bring back some of it - I just did that and and it got fuller tones and eliminated an awful hum - but re-build the amp with new capacitors and now you've got it. Also you must ZAP the dendrites.
There are mods to add the bass pedal drawbar to the lower manual to get an extra octave and allow for kicking bass. The reason I got rid of my M3 for a Crumar Mojo (besides reliability and portability) is that the C/V isn't the same. The common C3 setting is different from what you get on an M3. It may be out there but I couldn't find how to mod that. I gave the M3 to a gospel church organist buddy to have at home where I know it will be played and loved.
So much cooler than that red board... ;)
Thanks for the video, I wanted to know the difference.
I like that percussive stuff you did at the end.
Damn geography and time! :)
I have a 1959 M3 that I need to have some minor work to the tone wheels, (about 98% functional).
I love how much like a B3 this thing sounds like. I use a Roland VK8m for gigging. I wish I had a Leslie cabinet or at least the Bos RT-20 rotory pedal.
Great demo, really gave me some ideas on tweaking my own sounds
I really don't understand why Spinets are nearly worthless (monetarily) while B3s are thousands. I'd almost expect it to be the other way around. A spinet fits in a house so much more easily, is so much easier to move, and does 90% of what a B3 does. I'm glad they are so cheap though! I have an M100 and an M3, and got both for free, working, with bench. Cheapest B3 I've ever seen in even halfway decent condition is over $1000. A lot of people probably don't realize a lot of classic 60s and 70s songs everyone assumes are B3s were actually played on Spinets.
thank you
Nice video. Now I know what to expect from my $100 M3 (and what not to expect). Considering that I am a bass player, and mediocre at keys, it's a good start for me.
Man for the price (200-500) you can't beat the value. I'm going to pick one up next week.
Thank you for presenting each function. Would have been nice to hear the pedal tones. Are they strait as the B3 or do they have a sustained voice?
Damn! I was surprised how much like a Connie this thing can sound! I'm sold on this!
Foldback is pretty standard for the M3s nowadays, I didn't see a single M3 on sale in the last few years which didn't have foldback.
Did you know if you go between soft and normal vibrato switch you get an amazing chopping effect not found on any other organ including B-3? You have to center it between both and I guess I did it so much on mine it created its own gentle notch. Thanks for video David Bantle
Thanks - Great Overview
Just saw them again last night with Umphrey's McGee! Great Music all night, plust next door, 4finger5 (another michigan band) that rips it up! Heard some Hammond music in Umphrey's of course..
But you are comparing an M3 to a nord not a b3 even tho you might be on the b3 setting on the nord
@ThatsABiggon also the m100 series has the same one unique (half)vibrato.
Great video too!
Very helpful. Thanks for posting this. Did you chop this organ yourself?
Awesome!! Thanks!!
Where are the tone generator hold down bolts, and what Leslie can i use with it?
Thanks!!
Thanks, good demo
The thing about an M3 is that there are these tiny white wires that are soldered to each key, giving it it's distinctive tone. For some reason, they soldered the last 18 wires containing the high frequencies to a ground lug instead of the keys. So, the frequencies are there to have fold back. You have to unsolder the wires, seperate and use a multi-meter to see which wire goes to which key. It can be done, Also, when you play the 1st D key on both manuals, the bass drops out. Is that just me?
Thanks for explaining everything on this organ! I actually have one of these... but I can't believe people gig with this thing! I think its very heavy and cumbersome! Mine hasn't been operated in years, do you know where I can find oil for the motor? I'm hoping go get it fired up! Thanks!
I really enjoyed this video.. Question (if this reaches you).. I want to purchase one for our studio. How would I go about setting up for line level output as well as Leslie
Nice Video!
When we really love the Hammond organ and we are a musician, out of respect for Mr. Laurence HAMMOND, we never compare with copies.
In addition, this copy Nord does not grow old well in intensive use. The best copy HAMMOND organ wheel tone is simply manufactured by Hammond (series SK and XK and new B3) Only Italians Crumar with the MOJO arrive at a sound very close to HAMMOND.
*Laurens* Hammond 🎹🎹🎹
Great video! Wish I could've heard you jam out more! I am a guitar player who loves organ, and I have my eye on a 1958 M3 that is for sale for $300. I was thinking this would be something good to learn on and record with. What do you think?
He thinks that even after 11 years, he's not going to tell you what he thinks!! Did you end up buying the '58 M3 ??
@@klyvemurray sure did ! One of the best decisions I ever made. Spent many hours learning parts for my first album. Had it in my home for many years with a Leslie . So fun!
@@sances2007
Yep!! Leslies are great fun, especially when
moving it from the van to the stage! 🤣
My first rig was a used L100 & new 147.
When I first started gigging, peeps would
ask me what the thing spinning fast & slow
behind me, was.....
I'd tell 'em it was a four dimensional cooling fan to keep me and the
other chaps cool on the hot sweaty stage.
😎
That was back in '74 😲
.
@@sances2007 I have seen an M3 at one of my local thrifts paired with a leslie "Orpheous" 25 amp and they are asking $200 for both and nobody has picked up yet.
It's a great deal! I was fidling with the organ and it sounds great! To bad i don't know how to play and i don't have the space.
@@klyvemurray Not so much fun as lugging a B-3
Nice tone play green eyed lady
How do you replace a top key, take apart the keyboard so you can get to it?All I can find is how to do it on a B3.
@ThatsABiggon Also on the m100 organ
How are you connecting to the Holy Grail / Amp? Did you have a 1/4" jack installed? Thanks!
yes exactly. it has a 1/4” kit installed.
Can you recommend any sources for explaining how to do that? I just got my M3 today! Awesome video, keep playing!
ayy macpodz wuddup!
Looks like we have a lot in common!!!! I saw the babe on your "strap on". We have a 3 year old, and 6month old twins. I have the SAME setup as you, except for the nord. I've got a freakin' 88 key Kurz laying on top, lol. Too big, it overlaps the organ. Ha. Cool to see others out there that have this in common. Take care man,...
ist da leslie dabei oder ohne leslie
Any way you can answer a Hammond M3 question for me?
How do you hook up a volume pedal instead of using the one in the organ?
great vid!!! 5*
I'd love to hear a ballad. No Rock. Just music. No banging & clanging
are you playing it through a leslie or the built in speaker?
ps.... i had my little M-3 hooked up to a Leslie, a Hammond Reverb unit, an old large cabinet made by the Hammond Clock company, and also to a Hammond PR 40 (actually didn't use the PR 40 much).... the others when balanced and positioned right sounded great!! :)
do you play this through a leslie...??? or through a ventilator or what...???
Dear, is it possible to put more drawbars at M3?
Have one more question, does it have built in Leslie? Or no?
johnnovie it does not. You’ll get a speaker inside but not a rotary type of speaker. You can get a 1/4 out kit and the. Get a pedal. I would recommend the Mini Vent.
@@pjkatzmusic thanks again!
We have a model M3, Where can i get the pedals fixed? or are they just there for looks?
I know its been a while since you've post this video, but I'm looking to buy a black one for around $150 question I have for you if you dnt mind, were you using a External leslie on this video demonstration?
Thanks.
johnnovie $150 great for an M3. I was using a motion sound external Leslie for the Hammond.
@@pjkatzmusic ok that explains why it sounded big! I have a motion 145 pro leslie hopefully I can figure out a way to run it with the m3 thanks! And Hey! thanks for a quick response 👍
@@pjkatzmusic Aha! sounded too good to be 'naked'
I have a friend that says she wants to get rid of hers and I told her I'd take it. I've always wanted one, but I sat down earlier to play it at her house and the bottom set of keys was very very quiet. Is this operator error or something I should have looked at?
Check your db settings?
is that a macpodz tee?
You using a Leslie? What model?
Im having trouble with mine
Do you have a leslie?
most people dont know the vibrato s
This video shows you how to do a foldback. ruclips.net/video/LRp95Wr3Rmg/видео.html
M-3 good shape for sale
to much talk and his played to poor i can´t lestening the diference of b3 and m3
he spend my time he never play nord lead b3 .
@angelissynth - too much poor grammar in your criticism of this demo! If you knew your Hammonds you would appreciate his discussion of the differences between M3 and B3 without 10 minutes of someone just playing to understand this. Oh, and by the way, your self-indulgent instrumental keyboards leads with the SY-77 are weak and completely boring. You might want to title them "Experimenting with the Mod Wheel". Finally, someone should spell check your video credits before you post those videos.
Where's the B3? This is a comparison of a Hammond M3 and a Nord Electro - CHANGE YOUR VIDEO TITLE!
much talk much talk
DUDE, play the organ and shut up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Really!!!!!!!
"Hammond M3 vs B3 - M3 Features,Functions,ect"
You yalk to much, sorry people love the sound of a Hammond
If you're supposed to be comparing the M3 to a B3, where's the B3? The Korg is a poor substitute.
*****
Might well be. I look at an electronic keyboard and my eye says "Korg".
I'm getting careless.
the Nord definitely has better Hammond sounds then any Korg I know.
Huh, never knew Korg bought Nord. Time Flies.
Blalablabla... That's why girls always leave you. :)
So much talking, so little PLAYING.
