All the best race moments and career defining runs have been called by Rob since the freecaster days. All my favorite memories of Stevie, Sam Hill, Danny, Gwin, Greg etc all are accompanied by Rob screaming into the mic. Will be such a loss to the sport coverage not having him.

Commentators can make a sport. Warner is probably the reason I continued watching DH when I first found the sport. They've kept him on a leash since the Freecaster days, but it's still far better than any other commentary we get. The World Champs are broadcast on the BBC here, and the commentary is utterly dreadful, they have no idea what they're doing and just reading off a sheet.

Get ready for them to lunch GMBN+ and asked for your cash to watch any amount of coverage just like they have done with GCN+. Either they're going to let DH die and don't care, or they're trying to build it up into a real sport with bigger sponsors and more teams and actual prize money for placing, unlike the fuck-all they are paying out now. If the latter is the case, they already have somebody on salary in mind making millions to do the job regardless of their experience in the sport or not, and figure to pair that person with a retired name in the sport who is looking for a foot in the door to commentating/play-by-play that will calm and appease the rabble. With the changes to team fees I would expect it to be the latter. I would rather give up Rob and let these guys and gals (the riders) have real success and make real money either from prizes or sponsors, than keep Rob and keep paying them shit until they get pissed and form a union and ..... oh wait they already did that. Have a drink or six in Rob's memory and get excited about all the sponsor painted bikes that are going to be flying down the hills. 🤪

Maybe someone of his pedigree might pull it off but some random TV manicured presenter just won't cut it. This might also be a opportunity for another series to grow. A couple of years growing with the feeder teams and as those riders get fast have grown enough to pay them and keep them

Isn't the simple fact that Redbull are paying him more to stay with them than discovery are willing to pay him to jump ship, and as such he isn't willing to move - from what I understand a number of the existing team will be moving over. RW may have been the voice of the sport for the past decades, but someone was always going to have to take over, so whilst we should celebrate what he has bought to the sport, bigger concern is who they bring in as the main presenter. My money is on Steve Jones - already part of the GMBN network, huge history in the DH scene.

Rob Warner - the word you were looking for was "encapsulates" the sport.

I agree partially. It will be very sad to see Rob go. But I have never really enjoyed Eliot weather it was in the booth or even on track side. If Rob is a ten Eliot might be a 5-6. Does he deserve a chance as the lead commentator? Perhaps that could make a difference but I would be surprised if it did. He just giggles to much and he may know the riders and history but has not been part of it long enough. Rob has been involved since the beginning and it shows in a good way. I see things happening like the Olympics where someone is brought in that is viewed as a commentator but has no history with the sport and talks about things that the real spectator has no interest in. Is Discovery trying to take it mainstream? If so they will fail. Kind of like BMX coverage in the Olympics.

Elliot has only commentated for a short time. He's getting better. His style is very chill and very positive. It complements Rob's energy very well.

... "but has no history with the sport" .. Bro Elliot Jackson litterally retired from the World Cup DH circuit in 2013, solely due to asthma, which he'd had since a child but meant that the few years he competed in Downhill World Cup, he couldn't do 100%. But he was known for his sick whips & style. Before DH WC he raced MX & BMX.. He used to train DH WC laps with Bernard Kerr when BK was coming up.. I would say he would therefore know something about the history & the sport lol, he would have after all raced against Sam Hill on his mighty Ironhorse Sunday. I would assume that to be "history"..

Elliot is not a lead broadcaster, as it took him a good year to be at least reasonable, and the skill Rob has is gonna be hard to beat, he doesn't just commentate, but lives the ride, with the riders as they come down.
I hope they don't just pick a commentator to be virtue signaling, and really try to get the right people.
the big worry is how they change the personal videos and blogs of the race , lets hope discovery don't override everything, and try to own every video associated with the sport.

If Discovery had anyone with any sense for the sport, they would hire him. He might just be playing the game and waiting for them to approach.

You just need to watch the World Championships when the BBC get it in the UK to see how bad it can be without Rob commentating.
Oh - on the last World Cup broadcast right at the end, Rob says about Elliot leaving. Maybe to go to Discovery?

I don’t think downhill is downhill without Warner. Have any of uses watch world champs on bbc before, it’s boring af, same footage, different commentator, boring af. Rob brings something to commentating that I don’t think anyone else can bring.

As soon as I heard RedBull was losing the UCI I feared this. 😭😭😭 Simply stated, Rob is downhill. I would rather watch Rob commentate races from his cell phone on his youtube channel the day after the race, than pay Peacock to watch some stuffed shirt do it live on race day.

You're making a bit of a drama out of this. Rob"s great but a change could be good... Elliott gets tongue tied too often to take over the main job. Bring on the new. Get two women with a bit of attitude to freshen it up

Biggest issue here is that Discovery wont be able to make a production better than the free redbull one. There is absolutely no chance in hell, which turns to no one will pay to watch something thats going to be of lesser value than something that was free.

I'm abit older 65 ..so I seen a lot of commentators in many sports come and go..and to be honest I have heard enough of Rob Warner his commentary is not that good IMO, just listen to him with say Bart Bretjens...he is just not creative,...proffessional commentators will be better for the sport .
