Nice review, showing all of the many possibilities of the unit. Functionwise very well done! Only thing to criticize: The video doesn´t do the "noisefloor" of the A2.1u-Pedal justice, really. I get a strong, clear, low noise signal out of this pedal using my old Fender Strat! People complaining about issues with sound or noise: - might never have powered up the unit in "Hi-Gain-Mode" for passive instruments with low pickup output - might never have adjusted the unit for the pickup used and amp used (global mode) - might never have adjusted the six bands of eq - might never have used the noise gate - might never have used XLR Output & the groundlift switch - might never have used an insert y-cable for the jack output for getting stereo effects like reverb and stereo chorus - might never have read the effing manual. @@AS-do3vj In Soundcloud I was writing my information of the whole signal flow for you. I guess, you could not see or read it. I was using a "Fender Stratocaster Electric Guitar". When you want to use the Zoom A2.1u with a real Acoustic Guitar with "active" pickups (battery in the guitar needed) you can use the Zoom like me with my Fender Electric Guitar (although it´s has got a passive pickup). But if you want to use a real Acoustic Guitar with a (outputwise weak) "passive pickup" (no battery), then be sure to read the manual and learn how to specially switch on the Zoom in "Hi-Gain"-Mode. This will activate an internal preamp in the unit (or so) to enhance the weak output of this passive pickup for a healty signal and will help to avoid exceeded noise floor.
Ohhh thanks for this review,.....I just picked one of these things up & have no idea what all it does,.....I did find a drum beat, but suspect it was added from other equipment,....Hoping you explain more of the features...
This is a lot better than the video shows. Micing the guitar is the best way to go, but this allows me to get pretty close to a miced sound without being anchored to a mic.
Good pedals are good no matter how ong they have been available. I have been using my A2 for a few months and just upgraded to the deluxe version for regular use. No longer need the volume pedal and DI box, but still use a control switch for bypass switching. Made my own simple pedal board to hold them as a unit.
Yeah... I've had the A2 for a long time and could never get a decent sound for guitar out of it. BUT... what I have used it for is an emergency mic pre-amp with effects. If you use an XLR to quarter inch adapter - the ones with the transformer in the housing - you can get enough clean gain to use this (or the A2) as a nifty voice processor. Throw it in your bag for the coffee shop with your vocal presets ready to go.
Thanks Gearwire for posting your review! it's quite better than other reviews :) anyway, i just purchased this box and i hope it'll be great. i'm using fishman chorus ryt now but when i saw this one, i'm having nightmares dying to have this :) i will receive it in two weeks. thanks!
This zoom is very usefull, economic, but very very very DELICATE .. i bought 1 years ago and now is broken . I have G2 too .. and now i use it only with batteries
I disagree Jeff. An electric acoustic with an under saddle pick up straight into the board does not sound very much like an acoustic guitar. The beautiful guitar sounds you hear on your favorite recordings use top of the line microphones to capture the resonance of the acoustic. It is necessary to use at minimum a great preamp for some tone control. At best, something the models a more natural live acoustic sound well can make a huge difference.
You could plug it in but I doubt it would sound very acousticy...There's always the ZOOM G2.1u for electrics! Or if you're going for a acousticy sound on your electric then the best I've found so far are the Boss AC-2 and Ac-3 stompboxes! Hope that helped a little. :)
@DarkEyedJunko you can use both, ofcouser it will sound 100 times better if you have it plug in to an amp ( if you know how to get the best sound out of it). Direct connection to a PA will get a more clear tone.
Maybe it's just because of the amplifier/ monitor used, but i personally love to hear Fishman Aura Sixteen much better then this one. Maybe you should try to connect directly to the mixer's line in instead of picked the sound out from the amplifier used, to get a more direct sound out from the Zoom?
I am bidding on one of these but not because I really expect its models to sound like guitars but because this unit can add a variety of effects to an acoustic show. It would probably tale a serious investment of time an imagination to put this unit to use live but thats what I want....variety.
I have the Zoom A2..., pretty much the same as this one minus the pedal and a few hardware differences. It sounds great too. The Ovation presets are useless to me because my acoustic is OVATION :)
I like Zoom gear but what if I want my acoustic guitar to sound like my acoustic guitar? My experience with the G1XNext, which is a cool pedal is that you can't bypass it and just use the expression pedal. Am I missing something?
Well... came here because I have the same hiss problem with my pedal and wanted some help with that. Apparently the reviewer has worse noise problems with added distortion, and is oblivious to it....so there goes any hope for help. Off to ebay it shamely goes.
Too late answer from me. Sorry for You: You should then have given the unit one more try by switching it on in "Hi-Gain-Mode". In my own unit I never get unwanted distortion either, that has to come from somewhere else. This Zoom is not to blame for it, I think. :-)
