One scene I found so interesting in this movie was where the guy torturing Paxton hesitates once he starts speaking his language. It kinda shows how easily something like a language barrier can alter your ability to connect and view another human being as an actual person.
One of the best methods of connecting with someone is speaking their language after all. Another thing I noticed about that scene is that the German guy gets angry when Paxton starts speaking to him in German to the point of gagging him to keep him from speaking at all. I think the reason the German guy got angry was because when Paxton spoke to him in his language, he inadvertently made it harder for the German guy to torture him. It's easier for us to kill an animal than another human because we can't understand animals the same way we can understand humans, but if we could understand animals the same way, we'd have a harder time killing them. The same principle applies in this situation. The German guy couldn't view Paxton as glorified livestock anymore because there wasn't a language barrier between them anymore. He could no longer ignore the fact that he was harming a fellow human being.

Poor Kana. It's fricking tragic what happened to her. Loosing her friend, getting her eye torched and then taken out, and then committing suicide. It makes it ten god damn times worse because she was completely innocent. Poor girl.
It’s always funny to me how Eli Roth makes his characters unlikeable frat bros, and then you see him in interviews and you’re like “oh that’s just him”
No joke. The more I hear him talk, the less I like him. He just seems like a dick trying to play up fear to make money, instead of having a point to it.
This is why I love these kill counts, this type of horror movie is not for me but I still get to watch what all the buzz is about without being traumatised 😂
@@NYY300Precisely, also for me personally, when there's movies like this that have that extreme type of dark themed-horror, it's nice to see behind the scenes.
I got squeamish regardless. Despite all the blurring, a picture is still painted in my head and it's horrifying. James is so talented at delivering such descriptions.
I remember watching this and towards in the end when Paxton grabbed that guys hand in the bathroom stall I lost my shit . “YESSSSSSSSS GET HIIIIIIIIM.”
The scene of Josh falling over is permanently tattooed in my brain. I didn’t find Hostel to be super hard to watch, but that one scene really got me. It comes back into my memory randomly every now and again. Makes me wince lmao
I have such a fear of injures to the achilles to the point I start to panic if I so much as scratch it. That scene is one of the worst I've ever watched.
Paxton also gets credit for going back to save Kana since he didn't know her. He had never met her until that moment and only knew she existed because of a picture her friend showed him. So to risk capture by going back for her was a huge act of redemption
The scene where Paxton talks about hearing a girl drown as a kid was actually included to set up his decision to go back and save her. While Paxton isn’t a particularly malevolent person, him risking his neck like that for a stranger while he’s wounded, being actively hunted, and doesn’t know where to go would be something that most people would avoid doing in a situation like that, but since he has that past trauma of not being able to save someone who needed him, he has the motivation to do such a dangerous task, and the audience understands why he’s doing it and doesn’t see it as a forced and poorly written plot moment.
I have to thank James so much for bringing to light that czech and slovakia are not this messed up. I grew up in czech before moving here in my childhood and it was such a peaceful time for me. I liked hostel bc of the violence, but I hate the cultural representation. So thank you James.
Hostel is one of the few horror movies that I think really sits firmly in the pure brutality section of humanity. Saw this once as a younger man on IFC (same week as midnight meat train) and was perpetually haunted by the Josh scene. There’s a level of pure reality and bleakness that I don’t think any mainstream horror release has since covered.
It’s because it was inspired by real life killing and torture videos, and there’s not much more bleak in the world than that. One of the only things i’ve seen in my life that i wouldn’t recommend even to my worst enemies.Roth really made the most of seeing these horrible things.
I’m somehow heartened that Eli Roth, the man who comes off as the consummate frat boy, paid for a string quartet to play Vivaldi for people’s mental health during a tough shoot. Perfection. ✨
To be honest I always liked Paxton. Yeah he can be a frat boy douche but he's still got plenty of humanizing moments. Also going back into pure hell to save Kana despite having a clear shot to safety was the definition of heroism. Overall people are complex and have good and bad qualities, and for Paxton I think the good outweighs the bad. I consider him something of an unsung horror hero.

I am Slovak and I found this video done very well. I never expected I would see a horror movie taking place in my country on DeadMeat. Also great work with the pronunciation and history James.
There are two moments of this movie that has been burned into my brain after only watching it once 10+ years ago and it was the eye scene and then her jumping in front of the train. I was really on the fence on watching this video but I'm glad I did since the video is really damn good per usual. Great job James, Chelsea and Dead Meat
Rick Hoffman’s cameo will always be my favorite part of this film. He played a 3 minute villain that not only makes you laugh, but scares the shit out of you.
hearing james step fron the sponsorship to the set again and hearing the sound quality difference is amazing. just makes me appreciate the work they put into the kill count set.
Eli made a good point on the audio commentary; at the beginning of the movie, they’re laughing at the prostitutes from the hallway, and then when they’re taken to the Elite Hunting Club, they become the prostitutes getting laughed at from the hallway.
I once was roommates with a young Czech guy in 2016. Super nice. If you brought up this movie though he’d pretend to not be saddened but at one point he told me in private he wishes the movie didn’t exist or was set somewhere else because he was worried I’d be afraid of him or report him.

This kill count was actually posted when my boyfriend was visiting. Hostel is one of his favourite movies, and we were extremely excited! We watched the movie together first (I’d never seen it) and then the kill count. FANTASTIC movie, a new fave of mine, but it’s definitely not for everybody. That being said, I will absolutely recommend it to anybody who listens, if I know they could handle it.
I like the bit about the string quartet… lol I saw something similar in the bts for a horror movie when I was younger where the crew got puppies and kittens that were up for adoption that lived in a room on set for most of the shoot, and anyone was free to go and play, pet and feed them and adopt one if they wanted. I remember they said they adopted a bunch of pets, and raised a lot of money for the shelters on the shoot. Imagine being stressed out filming death scenes, screaming and running for hours and then getting to lay in a puppy pile or play with some kittens! Haha I remember seeing a shot of a scary creature carrying kittens. I don’t remember what movie it was, I just remember very vividly the sight of a monster holding kittens and giggling. I should try to figure out what dvd/Blu-ray that was…
It’s so funny seeing Jurassic World having the same kill count as Hostel. Also I love seeing James and Chelsea in the beginning of the video just like Nicole Kidman or Maria Menounos at the movie theater
The joy I felt at the end of the video. My friend and I quote “Of course, my horse!” at each other all the time since we’ve watched the movie together.
I’ve always found the premise of this film really scary compared to most other films. Like with the Saw films for example, they got so outlandish that they weren’t really scary anymore because it just sort of feasibly wouldn’t happen. But the idea of something like this happening feels very real and that’s why it’s so scary to me
Hostel 1 and 2 TRAUMATIZED me as a kid lol my mom never told me horror movies were fake and this was one of my first horror movies growing up, now it's one of my favorites but man it scarred me lol
This is one of the worst first horror movies you could pick... For these kinds of movies you should be at the very least 16 years old IMO. Its hard to digest, even as an Adult who watched many horror movies and played brutal video games before.
Wow. James finally did it. Hostel is officially a kill count legend now. Awesome. This channel has come such a long way. I still remember and regularly watch the first ever 7 minute kill count on Friday the 13th. Thanks James. We support you supporting the actors. ✌️
I love Hostel. Eli Roth is a master of that genre and I believe it’s one of the most effective horror movies ever. It goes really far but never too far.
Describing the movie as "like softcore porn" followed by an unexpected tradesman discussing his manscaping then going "...so i came over here for nothing?" had me for a second 😅

When I first saw it, I was a teenager and just blatantly disgusted with its overt misogyny and excessive torture. But it's one of those movies that has weirdly gotten better with time, precisely because of what you state here in the opening. Hostel just works.
Big fan ever since the beginning of your kill count series with Friday the 13th. Took me until the tenth film to hit the sub button but all in all it was worth it. Over the years I've watched you not only grow as a channel, but as well as people. Your attention to the feelings as well as the public eye as far as suicide prevention warnings before the Hostel video, and the SagAftra strike messages at the beginning of each video recently is just one of many things that make you guys and girls stand out from the rest. Keep up the amazing work!!!!
I'm not sure if it counts as horror, but I'd love to see them cover Parasite. It is a fantastic movie, and, by the end, becomes an edge-of-your-seat thriller. Just would be interesting hearing james talk about it.
I think it has a lot of the same issues as other Korean & Japanese films he wants to cover - distribution companies are real trigger happy with copyright claims

I watched Night of the Demons when I was 8 & was scarred for years. I finally watched it again around 17 & all the memories I had repressed came flooding back. It was great. That lipstick scene at 8 years old was something I never forgot.
I remember it took ages to get the eye scene out of my head when I first saw this, definitely a testament to the makeup and effects crew that worked on the movie; it's probably going to take just as long to forget it again.
One of the scariest horror movie by concept because unlike some of them this one is not only very likely to happen but you can be 100% sure similar stuff is actually happening somewhere.
I remember searching up child’s play content when I was younger because of how curious I was with horror movies. And I found your first child’s play video the day it released and it was exactly what I wanted. And I instantly became a fan. I always felt like Hostel part 1 and Part 2 always resonated with me because it feels like it *happens* *in* *real* *life.* Yes the dialogue is clunky at times, but the concept is absolutely thought-provoking and that's what makes it really my favorite horror series overall.
That banana peel sound when James slipped was great. I actually didn't hate them enough to like any of them dying, except the murder employees\ customers. they were assholes and needed a lesson taught to them but not tortured or killed.
That and compared to the frat bros They obviously are acutally torturing and killing people in horrible and cruel ways Like I get the frat bro guys are assholes, but I really think anyone would honestly enjoy seeing them get tortured like that
I remember watching Hostel in the theater about a week after it opened. There is certainly a lot of glorious gore but those Achilles tendon cuts... man, those were gnarly. I think those were the most realistic injuries I had ever seen in a horror movie at that time.
Honestly James never fails to keep me entertained with these skits he has for the sponsors in these videos 😂 I remember it was so good one time ago I even tried to convince my parents to buy me a manscaped package
I just realized that this is the movie I watched when I was so young I couldn't quite remember the whole thing. All I remembered from it was the sign and the eye scene.
Hostel is so nostalgic for me. I saw it in theaters in high school when it came out and it is such a product of its time. It’s a fun ride of a movie if you can stomach it.
God the heel slit still stays with me to this day. I had and incident with some tight ass shoes when I was younger and mine were cut. That feeling of burning and pin stabbing every time I took a step is ingrained in my mind forever.
dawg i never had mine slit but i did have it scraped once by a glass-screen door closing on it and it felt shitty enough. i never want to experience that pain
I actually had only seen the alternate ending! I could have been totally misinterpreting it but I saw it as him considering killing the businessman, but instead took his daughter to keep her safe because her dad was super dangerous and part of a very influential murder club. Defo an upsetting scene either way. I was glad to hear about the real ending, I had no idea.

Paxton also gets credit for going back to save Kana since he didn't know her. He had never met her until that moment and only knew she existed because of a picture her friend showed him. So to risk capture by going back for her was a huge act of redemption
Mama is the girl who showed them the photo of their friend
😢s
The scene where Paxton talks about hearing a girl drown as a kid was actually included to set up his decision to go back and save her. While Paxton isn’t a particularly malevolent person, him risking his neck like that for a stranger while he’s wounded, being actively hunted, and doesn’t know where to go would be something that most people would avoid doing in a situation like that, but since he has that past trauma of not being able to save someone who needed him, he has the motivation to do such a dangerous task, and the audience understands why he’s doing it and doesn’t see it as a forced and poorly written plot moment.
kana is the one who showed the picture, yuki is the friend in the picture who dies at the same time as oli

Ahhh midnight meat train! Hope that shows up on dead meat
Holy crap Midnight Meat Train, I forgot about that one. Love Vinnie Jones!!!

Perfection. ✨
