I actually know how to hypnotize chickens. If you lightly pinch right below their ears and flip them over and lay them on their back they will just stay there. They can look around but will not be able to actually get up. We used to do it as kids on the farm and were always told not to leave them like that or they might become easy prey for a predator.
This makes sound Werner like a Psycho but let me clarify: during thr filming of Fitzcarraldo Klaus Kinski ( the real psycho of this story ) grabbed a Rifle from one of the guards and shot multiple rounds into a Tent full of Extras who were native to the area and apparently even injured one, it was then that Werner tore the rifle out of his hands and threatened to shoot Kinski in return.. Werner Herzog told that story in a Documentary about the two called Mein liebster Feind = my dearest enemy. The documentary unfortunately is in german only but i guess there are subtitles somewhere to find. And by the way supposedly one of the native extras even asked Werner if their tribe should take care of Kinski what Werner declined. Kinski was a Monster who constantly lashed out violently at others and allegendly even r*ped his Mother, Sister and even daughter... so yeah i just wanted do clarify that Werner is not at fault here.
He technically is, Werner would way too often give Kinski the carté blanche and would often hire him despite knowing of his problematic history simply for surface level existencialist BS.
As far as what makes Game in the Sand so different... Children are sacred in Germany. You don't mess with children - not just in the Jimmy Saville way, but you protect children from harm in person and psyche. Whatever disturbed him about this film would have been even further heightened considering he brought children into this. If he was disgusted, he would have understood how that disgust is amplified by experience of childhood. If it was too much for him, it would have been thought as ruinous for the kids. Depending on the content, publication or distribution could even be illegal simply because children are involved.
Funny that, when you mention real life media that's gone lost in the beginning, my mind immediately jumped to the Grizzly Man tapes, and Werner Herzog is one of the few people who've heard them.
@@ihatemyname2816 probably because he's one of the most respected filmmakers in the world and was granted permission when he was making the documentary.
@@CinnamonGrrlErin1 I second this. He’s often sought as one of the greatest directors, fitzcarraldo, Aguirre the wrath of god. And much more. He also did a documentary on the grizzly man. He most likely was given footage to help with the film
Yes, chickens eat chickens. I was raised on a chicken farm and we fed the dead chickens back to the live ones. They are raptors and they do eat other birds. Yes, chickens attack children. Especially roosters. I have scars, both physical and emotional, from being stalked, chased, knocked down, and ruthlessly pecked by roosters. I can laugh about it now, but when I was 5 and not too much bigger than a rooster it was traumatic. No, chickens aren't stupid. They have their own kind of intelligence. They are very social and can remember people. They can remember if you are kind or mean to them. I have a feeling the chickens thought Werner wasn't very smart, either haha. Like the saying goes, if you judge a fish on how well they can climb a tree, they aren't going to seem very smart. If you judge a chicken on their ability to be directed in a film by a human who may or may not have been cruel to them, they might score pretty low.
Werner felt like a guy who's felt incredibly smart comparing himself to chicken... fuck... I just can't imagine bragging about some animan being "fiendishly stupid". No wonder that safe regulations on his sets are shit
Nahhh man, he definitely had those kids kill that chicken and filmed their reactions. It was probably meant to illustrate the danger of childlike stupidity/ignorance. That's why he refers to a chicken's stupidity as fiendishly terrifying. Also would explain the title of the movie. The kids were playing a "game" with the chicken, killing it in the process. Probably couldn't release it due to his guilt over traumatizing the kids and for animal cruelty reasons.
When I heard the description of what we know about the plot, I immediately thought of one of the more obscure Grimm fairytales "How Children Played At Slaughtering", where a game if play pretend goes too far and one of the children ends up actually being killed. (It's much more of a modern urban legend than a fairytale actually) The storyactually ended up being removed from later editions, because it got a lot of negative feedback for being too violent. (Saying something considering other Grimm fairytales aren't exactly harmless) So maybe Herzog used that idea (whether he got inspired by the tale or came up with it himself) Children see someone killing a chicken and in an attempt to work through their feelings about it end up killing one of their friends? I don't think one of the kids in the movie got actually killed, but maybe having them pretend to kill another child in front of the camera was already taking things too far and they were traumatized? Or maybe I'm thinking too complicated and they just killed the chicken. Seems extremely plausible actually.
I appreciate all the research you do in your lost media videos! I know that covering the same type of “this one episode or series that wasn’t even very good is missing” content can be tedious and burn someone out. I’m glad you’re doing so many other topics! I can’t wait to see what else you do next.
Werner Herzog is honestly incredibly funny in all of his interviews. He has a dry, absurdist humor where he can say nutty shit with a completely straight face. Like the chicken quote.
if the reason it was never released really is due to trauma involving roosters and kids, i think it was probably out of respect for the children and not necessarily because of the rooster. or if these children really were hurt on set perhaps it was even about saving face. definitely dont wanna be known as the guy that traumatizes kids just for a 14 minute film.
When I heard about this one I assumed the children had killed the rooster, intentionally or not. The thought of the rooster injuring the children wasnt something I thought of, but can see that happening as well. My grandma owned chickens when I was younger, and they had a very vicious rooster who attacked pretty much whenever you got near him or his flock. She had to get stitches to close up a wound he left on her leg. Regardless of what happened in this film, if it even exists, its certainly an interesting topic.
You actually see some guys do the chicken hypnosis trick in Herzog's 1979 Kinski-starring film "Woyzeck." It involves holding the chicken's beak to the ground, and then drawing a chalk line on the ground outward from the beak.
i've seen a few channels mention this one in passing but i haven't seen anyone really dive into it yet, which in hindsight is crazy because you definitely showed that there's a lot more to it than meets the eye. man, Herzog's obsession with the chickens is fucking *weird*. i get that he's a weird guy in general, but still, there has to be a reason why he's so adamant about discussing the stupidity of chickens.
Been having a really rough time of it lately, and your videos have been the only thing that's helped me to relax. I managed to get some sleep last night listening to your Mandela Effect video. Now poking around your channel, I noticed that you made a video about my personal favorite lost media mystery. I've always suspected that one of the kids got badly injured during filming, and Herzog didn't want to have to deal with the full ramifications of that, but you make a compelling presentation for the other arguments. On another note, mad respect for choosing to not delve too deep into the more graphic side of mysteries. True crime/tragedy channels are a dime a dozen, and IMO they usually tend to just be depressing. I prefer mysteries that are eerie and thrilling and make me want to speculate on things we don't fully understand over stuff that serves as a reminder of how miserable and hopeless the world can feel. You did a great job at treading the line between potentially upsetting and actually weird and intriguing. Thanks for putting out such great content!
Awesome!! I watch a lot of lost media channels and have never heard of this. Thanks for making great content, it really feeds my lost media addiction lol
I'm the opposite with chickens. I feel like chickens are more intelligent than people give them credit for. My aunt owned chickens, and I would observe them in her backyard. They seemed like they knew what to do if there were predators around, they'd run and take cover (I saw them do this by going underneath a trampoline) and then go back in the clear if it was safe. It seemed like they followed a leader too, almost like dogs or wolves. I'm sure chickens could be trained like one too. If chickens could br trained to fight like dogs, maybe one could be trained to be a guard animal, or trained to do tricks (the chicken in the dwarf movie most likely was trained to do so).
When I clicked on this video, I had no idea of what I would learn. This man must have the most bonkers career of the last four decades. If someone told me about Mr. Herzog before this, I'd assume he was a character from an over the top novel. Great video!
Actually some chickens are really really smart! Not like smart like a pig or cow or dog etc, but definitely a lot smarter than you’d think. Like smart enough to trap bugs and other animals and create escape routs on the spot. I love chicken and their so cute to me I’m sorry 😭
Werner's very presence truly does seem to passively conjure bizarre happenings. I went to see him talk at Indiana University around 2011. Before the talk could end, a man in the audience collapsed and died of a heart attack.
An infamous lost short film more people should know about is SEX AND DEATH by Teemu Maki. He made it in 1988 as a student in Helsinki. In the art film he kills a cat with an axe and masturbates on its corpse! The film hasn't been shown to the public since 2004.
It's Jason Robards, not Justin Robards. And the chicken "hypnosis" Herzog is referring to is depicted in his films Signs of Life and The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser. Neither the dancing chicken in Stroszek nor the cannibalistic chickens in Even Dwarfs Started Small could have been under hypnosis, because all it does is make the chicken lie still. So whether or not he used the same trick in Spiel im Sand, it wouldn't have had anything to do with his decision not to release it.
I think the reason werner doesn't want to show rather because werner showed the children "losing innocence" or showing a horrible aspect of human mind. it would be honestly good to see the film in a social aspect kinda of way, what kids can do when bored or looking for fun its honestly horrifying what we do as adults, but what if a kid isn't so different afterall?
First theory i don't buy. Seems messed up but not so messed up that someone like him would dispose of. I think maybe one of the kids after burying the chicken got second thought and tried to grab the chickens head and pull it back out maybe leading to ripping its head of or something. Which still seems not bad enough for a guy like him to take so bad. Idk or maybe someone ran over it with a lawnmower. Idk.
