How your heartbeat shapes your experience of time | Irena Arslanova | TEDxBerlin

  • Cognitive neuroscientist Irena Arslanova delves into the intricate connection between the brain, heart, and our perception of time. Highlighting the heart's role in distorting time, Arslanova's experiments showed that during heart contraction, time felt shorter, and during relaxation, it felt longer. This suggests a link between the heartbeat's impact on the brain and our overall time experience. Arslanova concludes by emphasizing the embodied nature of time perception and suggests that mindful moments, like slowing down and breathing, can enhance creativity by expanding our temporal awareness.
    Irena is a postdoctoral researcher in cognitive neuroscience at Royal Holloway, University of London. She is interested in how we experience time - why it can sometimes pass with a dizzying speed, yet other times take painstakingly long? Irena examines how our internal bodily signals, like the beating of the heart, cause the time to distort. She designs experiments to link perception to physiology (see: doi.org/10.101...) and use EEG (electroencephalography) to reveal the underlying neural mechanisms. She is starting a Leverhulme early-career fellowship in March 2024. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. What a fascinating talk by Irena Arslanova at TEDxBerlin! The connection between the heartbeat and our perception of time is truly mind-boggling. It's amazing to think about how our internal bodily signals, like the beating of the heart, can influence our experience of time. I loved learning about how each heartbeat can shape our perception of time, making it feel shorter or longer. It really makes you appreciate the intricate relationship between our brain, heart, and time. Such a thought-provoking talk that highlights the importance of mindfulness and awareness in shaping our temporal experience. Thank you for sharing such valuable insights, Irena!

    Our perception of time is deeply intertwined with our physiological states, specifically the rhythm of our heartbeats. This embodied experience reveals that as our heart rate changes, so does our sense of time-speeding up with a rapid heartbeat and slowing down with a relaxed one. This intricate dance between the heart and brain not only shapes how we perceive each moment but also suggests that by understanding and influencing our internal states, we can potentially control our experience of time.

    One question… in a physical fight our heart is beating faster and time going slow… isn’t that contradictory to this study?

    • @neuro_Irena
      @neuro_Irena 3 месяца назад +1

      Excellent question! Things always become tricky when you add additional variables, in this case, arousal. Arousal in itself has a huge modulatory influence on neural activity, e.g., by amplifying attention, that effect may be sufficient to slow time down and it's probably so powerful that it overshadows the effect of momentary heart fluctuations, which may have a larger effect in a state of relatively lower arousal. I am trying to also examine the interplay between arousal, heart and time perception. We actually did manipulate arousal in the paper, but by showing fearful vs happy faces, but that is way less arousing than the excellent example you're giving, so we need a better method of inducing heightened arousal in the lab. I'm trying to do just that in near future.

    Can a heartbeat shape our experience of time ? It can indeed shape the experience of anything : The branch of neuroscience we study is influenced by the heartbeat itself, and the consciousness we possess is sustained by it. Without the body, we have nothing.

    Interesting study. It's surprising (to me) that it was detectable. I wonder what the delta is for the states. I would have thought that the regulation of dopamine would have made our brain's perception of time more constant from beat to beat.
