- In this video I show the latest section of track to be laid and take you on a quick a tour of the layout with my Class 47 in Scotrail livery. I also give information on the DCC wiring equipment I use. Apologies if it appears a bit shaky, I had a lot of different parts of the layout to cover in a short time as I was low on battery!! :-) Feel free to comment or give your suggestions.
I have followed your advice and bought all the wiring and clips etc from Express models, they are brilliant and make connecting droppers to the bus wires so easy. For anyone who has previously laid on their back soldering droppers to the bus wire, and having hot solder dropping on them, these things are a revelation. Many thanks
Clear, concise instructions - a really helpful video. It makes a huge difference to the presentation when the maker of the video has prepared, organised and familiarised themselves with the names of the components. This will be a regular reference for my own wiring.
The starter kit from Express Models is FIRST CLASS and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Your layout is really coming on a treat. I must say you have a really relaxed speaking voice, very easy to listen to, am thoroughly enjoying your vids, keep them coming.
Ian
Thanks for all the info. Re the wiring kit from express models was puzzled as to how I was going to get started...All now ordered thanks again. Looking forward to the next video....Geoff.....
Hello DaveI've just started to follow your progress with your model railway build, I took up your suggestion and sent away for 30 meters of the blue and brown bus wire, as you suggested its good quality material and arrived very quickly. looking forward to your next update, keep them coming. Regards, Davy.
Great directional video!!! Love your clarity and advise... Very tidy stuff!!!
DCC Pack from Expressmodels only £29.75. It ischeaper buying it in a bundle than all of the components individually. Great value in my opinion. I got extra bus wire as my layout is 20m all the way round and got a extra roll of the thin dropper wire. I would also recommend buying another bag of the blue crimps and red splices for connecting wire. It has been a great help to me, being new to DCC. This way of wiring makes it a doddle to do!
Hi, I started building in October 2012. But the loft was converted and floored starting last January 2012. I spent a lot of time sketching and pondering my plans. Things of course change a bit but if you have an idea in your head, scribble it down! I am lucky with my loft, the house is a simple roof design. Some houses, especially some modern ones have awkward roof designs. Believe it or not, I looked at the roof shape when looking for a new house, I always had a loft layout in mind lol.
Hi Dave it is nice to see your layout from the beginning mate clive
Nice update ... Love the long sweeping curves.
Hi.just got order from Express models thanks for the tip again...Happy Xmas to you and your family
Its a great kit to get you started! When you need to order more of the blue crimp slices and red crimp blades let me know...I got a bag from Rapid Electronics which works out a lot cheaper for these components. But I am so glad I got the stuff from express models fist to let me see what is needed. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Dave
Yeah I am going to do this on the upper main line tracks. This double cork technique was showcased in Model Rail Mag some time ago and I remember thinking at the time that this was a quick and easy technique! Perhaps this is where Everard got his idea from. Another solution is to use a thin strip of styrene at one side, its the same principle. Thanks for the comment, much appreciated. More videos coming very soon. Cheers. Dave
I understand. Wives are hard to win over sometimes. Stay warm, and thanks for the great videos.
Hi,
You simply stick it in to the end of the crimp blade (the red rubbery plastic end) and get your pair of pliers, which I think I show in the video and crimp it shut with those. Its easy, quick and no soldering. If you decide to change the track formation or re wire, all you do is pull the crimp blade out of the crimp socket, cut the wire off which connects it to the track and throw the old crimp blade away. Its easy. I found I could make wiring progress fairly quickly using these items.
I actually don't show the pliers as I thought...see express models for their dcc starter pack, it shows the pliers. You get the pliers in DIY stores, online electronic stores such as rapid electronics etc. They are handy, as they are wire stripers too! Hope this helps?! Dave
It looks really god. some nice long trains there.
The tangle of wires for points and accessories is why I have decided to go with the merg cbus system, just needs 12v power and 2 wires to each module around the layout, a lot less mess.
Have to agree with Ian below. Great videos, useful and superb layout both in terms of space and future plans.
Cheers mate, it really is gret to know my videos are not rank rotten lol. I really appreciate your kind comments. Dave
Thank you, I was unsure whether yours was Heljan or not. Anyway thanks for supplying the email!
The layout will have an upper layer. It will go all the way around the back of the layout, with a large 2.5m long TMD at the opposite side from station. Raised area will incorporate the upper main line (electrified) and several tracks of depot, servicing sheds, inspection pits, etc.I may need to wire in points before fixing the board down as I will find it hard to get into do the wiring, as clearance will only be 80mm (the height of the retaining wall I will use in that section. See my video 1.
Cheers, keep watching, I will post updates when there is something to report.
Hi,Ok,the diamond crossing!,its an insulfrog so its not as complex to wire as you may think. If you have it coming from turnouts, like on my layout you solder dropper wires to every rails at all four of the 'corners' of the diamond. So basically each dropper wire is connected either +/- to all of the 8 rails coming from the diamond middle. I also added insulated rail joiners from each of the 8 rail ends to avoid any chance of short circuits. Its simple but time consuming to do! that helpful?cheers
It is easy, just take your time. Any further questions just get in touch, I might be able to help! Cheers.
Looking great!
thanks, yeah I didnt want too many tight curves, they tend to look unrealistic, but sometimes they cant be helped!
very good video on wiring mate as dcc and wiring is a very grey area and i have been using dcc for years and i have picked up some tips from this video.
the layout is coming on nicely now tho, will that outer line for coaches be hidden and as you have a flat layout will you be able or want to be adding bridges for the locos?
also how much was the starter pack from express models?
terry
I have bought this kids on your recommendation cheers thanks Dave
Cool, its good value if you buy the no solder dcc starter kit. However if you need more of the plug clips and red socket things go to rapid electronics. You get a bag of a 100 for cheap! Dave
Hi Dave, great video. Can I check one thing, however? When you connected the dropper wires to the spade connectors, did you crimp them or solder them?, cheers, Stewart.
+Stewart Fraser Hi Stuart, its all crimped. No soldering under the layout. Cheers. Dave
+DaveClass47
Hi Dave, thanks for that. It’s really great news, as soldering under the baseboard just isn’t my idea of fun!! Have a really great Christmas and a very Happy New Year, cheers, Stewart.
Im trying to watch your vids n pause it when i get to the section :0) .
With yourself & richard youve both gave me ideas even the mrs is having a go.
:0)
Hi thanks for getting in touch. I am glad my videos are of some use to you...and your Mrs! lol. Dave
Cheers, I do like a train with a decent amount of coaches! Sometimes size matters lol
just wondering, how long has it taken to get to this stage! I can really see this looking really good in the future! your beams look quite organised unlike mine in my loft!
Dave, I've just finished wiring my tracks with the help from this video. My only problem is when I was parking the loco in the siding I couldn't stop the loco. What have I done wrong?
Thanks for the help!
Phill
Cheers so confusing but ur vids r helping me just this bit confused me many thanks.paul
Cheers, I am really keen to make a good job of it.
Where are you in the house - the attic? I see insulation on the floor under your layout. Aren't you hot up there?
Hi, yup i'm in the attic.
Gets warm in mid summer and cold in mid winter. However I don't model up there in June-August and have a heater for the colder days. I have since insulated the loft with silver foil stuff that keeps the heat down in summer and the cold out a little in winter! If I had a big space like this in the house itself I would use that, but my wife wouldn't like it! lol
No I am not disturbing the fibre glass in any way, taking great care not to do so, but if I am going to move it I do put a mask on.
Hello Dave. Thanks you for your great videos.
I've been waiting patiently for time and space but still only have room for a small 5x12 setup.
I currently am working my bus line wiring feed underneath ez track and wanted to know if I need multiple feeds from my controller to run 3 mainlines?
I'm told I only need one set of wires for everything. Is that correct? Thanks.
Hi....you need one bus wire (one + and one - line). From this you can take multiple feeds off to your multiple tracks. I have one bus wire around my layout which must have over 50 feeds coming off it to power the 5 mainlines, station, sidings, storage yard, depot etc. The best way to do it is install the bus wire (you don't have to complete the loop....it can be an open ended wire.) From your controller take the two leads and connect it to the bus wire. Then take feeds off this bus wire up to the tracks above. I hope this makes sense? Cheers Dave
Cheere Ian, I will have to tell my wife someone likes listening to my voice....she is fed up listening to my chat about my train layout lol.
Hi dave ive been watching your updates & videos fantastic as a fellow scot would love to do the waverly station been few time ive tryed a few to map out the track cant seam to get it right . I no its a BIG ask but could u let me know how youve done it pls ? Cheers
Hi, my layout isnt really accurate Waverely!....its a condensed version lol. I dont have a track plan I can show you right now, but I may have in the future. Cheers. Dave
Dave,
what cork are you using and do you glue it to the baseboard OR do you rely on track pins holding everything in place. I cannot determine whether glued or pin held cork is quietest when running, do you know? regards Bruce
+Bruce Henderson Hi, I used 1/16" for the station, 1/8" thick for the mainlines, as this gives a nice realistic shoulder. Not glued down, I wouldn't.. Once its ballasted it holds in place and is invisible. Cheers. Dave
great video i just started out i mean basics level i got the hornby elite controller and how do i program the dcc chips as im having major issues on it would there any chance of a video to cover this topic if poss in more detail
hi, ok...I shall take a note of it and put that in my May update video due in 2 weeks, or if it merits it, I can put it in a stand alone video. Leave it with me, it is easy to do on the elite. Dave
Hi there ! How do you attach the thin wire from the track to the crimp blade ?
Thanks
Tim
Hi. Can you tell me how you stop the peco cable clips from becoming unstuck from the baseboard. Every clip I have used has become unstuck.
Hi. Oh they are a pain!....I eventually pop a tiny bit of glue onto the pad and stick it to the baseboard underside. They come loose after a while if not glued. I was forever going and pressing them back on to the base board, only for them to come loose! Cheers. Dave
Dave can IAsk please Can you tell me do you wire the program track Is it the same wires as the bus bar
Hi, I have wired my programming track from the back of the Hornby Elite controller which has separate terminals for powering this.
Hi, I recently bought a Heljan Class 47 and I'm having a bit of problem trying to fit the snowplow, the instructions that come with the loco are unclear and was wondering if you could help me?
hello dave did you do a complete loop of the main bus wire or is it open ended
hi, well for the first 3 years it was a complete loop, but then I heard that this was a "no no"....but it never affected any of my stuff. Its now open ended as I had to make alterations and split them when I was under working on the wiring.. they don't have to be complete looped. If you read online there are arguments for and against both. Dave
thanks did you have to put in the resister and capacitor in the ends ?
no. none of that!
Oh ok mmm im still installing mine the droppers are very time consuming
yes they are, I have one every couple of metres.....more in certain areas, ie around complex pointwork as the as required. No need to put them on every piece of track, remember the fishplates will carry the current too. Enjoy! lol. Dave
Good luck, any problems give me a shout.
which decoders do u use
Hi, sorry but I am not 100% sure how the the Heljan class 47 is put together. Can I suggest you contact Heljan directly. I ended up doing this for the class 26! I contacted them on heljanuk@yahoo.co.uk - hope this is some help! Cheers
Dear Mr.Dave
