About the movement changes. Usually in game development, the way that minecraft does movement is widly considered to be a bug. The devs did the right thing, changed it cause its a bug and bugs need to be fixed, then heard the community and reverted the changes. I dont think they even knew that itd be a big deal. Several old games last far longer than they would otherwise because of such things. That's just my opinion though. (Games are meant to be fun after all)

Sword blocking forever brings back a single memory that I will remember forever: Im on a factions server just getting started, and I run across someone where I see them before they see me. I was a kid I cant type fast, so I just waggled my sword until he noticed me and he seemed frightened. Both of us waggling our swords made one of my first faction teammates, and Ive never gotten to use it since. ITS BAAAACK!!!
The way I see it, even if an aspect of the game is widely used by the community, if it's unintended the devs should be allowed to change it. However, they never mentioned wanting to change it or highlight it when they did, which is the main problem. Large changes like that need to be mentioned clearly, so I hope they do that in the future. Anyway, congrats on the marketplace release! Seeing cool stuff like that from Hermitcraft being able to be accessible for viewers is always cool and I hope everything goes well for you.
Wait... if now we can change the texture of an item depending on the enchantments, that means we now can have different enchanted books with unique textures WITHOUT MODS !!!!
It should be noted that not all of the changes were reverted (at least going by what the patchnotes say). Two big ones were, but I'm aware of at least 4 other issues introduced in 25w02a that were not mentioned in this week's patchnotes at all - the fall damage height reduction, the grounded elytra movement and takeoff clunkiness, the removal of the "snapping" of your velocity to a certain axis when the X or Z component of your vector is low enough (which was originally introduced as a feature for other reasons, and which enables certain parkour maneuvers - this one was also mentioned in the discussion post on the official feedback forum that got over 17k votes), and the fact that moving aligned with an axis is no longer slightly faster. I also don't love that the patchnotes left an ominous "we want to revisit this in the future" in there.
I realized from seeing this title that I would be thrilled if we had both sword blocking and shields as options. I was always a fan of the change, but in hindsight it doesn’t make sense to *not* be able to block with your sword if that’s your only option
I feel like blocking can be re-added as a default thing, if they also make the shield a weak melee weapon, or if it works fundamentally differently from the way it did before. Maybe blocking can be specific to sword attacks, where if a sword wielding opponent tries to attack you while you’re blocking, there’s a clink sound and their sword gets briefly stunned the way shields do when hit by axes.
now all they need is data driven items (which are just json files with all the default components like item model and stuff and the file name is the item id). and this can also be useful for recreating 1.8 because we could add a new item called say "diamond_axe" under the minecraft namespace so you can change its attack damage and do that for all the weapons on 1.8 so enabling the datapack modifies the old items
After hearing about the data driven components before it was implemented for enchanting i had thought doing the exact same custom texture enchant thing with combined textures 😮
I did not quite understand the movement reversion, but have they also decided to revert the removal of sprint sneaking and spring eating, as well as the change with elytra sprinting. I think this comes into effect with many things, including riding entities as well. I really loved having it, both as it was a better way of movement in ancient cities, as well as the variety in the movement and possibilities of what you could do in the game. Just the FOV effect of sprinting in a boat is a nice touch imo, and i really hope this change gets reverted as well.
Good to know that they listened about the movement and reverted the change, though I am curious what their plan is for it when they decide to revisit it
It's so interesting how very tiny changes can end up affecting huge parts of the Minecraft community. Last time they devastated the Parkour side, while trying to make the game make sense. This time they pretty much revolutionized PvP for the better by giving people the option to fully replicate the old style.
Honestly the change where you stopped sprinting when consuming an item is indeed how its supposed to be. I do agree with them reverting back the diagonal sprinting.
With the option to block with any item, an Axe can now be able to block! I think if there could be a data pack to add reasonable changes, I think shields should have a bigger durability and use less while blocking and Swords use more durability while blocking, as same to Axes. This would encourage Shields, but give the option of a Sword if the player is focused on building with little means of defense. And with custom textures by name and make your own crafting recipes without mods, making your own weapons and maybe alternate shield types will be a reality.
The movement changes are so easy to fix, just normalize them at the speed of diagonal movement. It doesn't affect playing parkour and it makes movement a little faster for casual players. Win win
You know, people always act like Mojang never listens to the community about anything, but that's not really true. Do they bend to the community's every whim? Of course not, but that would create just as many problems. If enough people have a viable reason to complain about a change instead of just saying "this sucks", Mojang usually listens.

they should add blocking as an enchantment but it stops you from using shields, maybe block 50%/75% the damage instead of all of it. that way you can have torches in your offhand but still have the block functionality
It's interesting that they're bringing back sword blocking as a feature, even if it's behind item data. I wonder if they're experimenting with adding pre-1.9 combat elements back as data or gamerules. If they make a gamerule that can revert the game to those old combat mechanics, I could see a lot of servers, such as Hypixel, to fully update to recent versions of the game. Though I can also see how that wouldn't be a guarantee due to differences in game performance from 1.8 to now. Interesting nonetheless
EXTREMELY excited that Mojang is now re-adding removed features as an option!! Really great precedent! I immediately thought of 1.8 combat when hearing about this, so.... there's a very, very good chance Mojang is also thinking about this :3
I hope there’s a way to make blocking work for specific damage types, because I think it’d be nice if sword blocking worked for maybe melee attacks and not as effective for others, that way shields aren’t entirely useless for those who want them

Watching you is like witnessing a miracle unfold, and I’m begging you-please never stop creating! You’ve set a standard so high it feels otherworldly, and I’m here for every single second of it. You’re not just a creator-you’re an icon, an inspiration, a force of nature. Thank you for sharing your brilliance with us. Please keep blessing us with your presence; we’re not worthy!
they should add blocking as an enchantment but it stops you from using shields, maybe block 50%/75% the damage instead of all of it. that way you can have torches in your offhand but still have the block functionality
I am so glad they saw that huge petition and actually listened to the community.
Diagonal bridgers and parkourists rejoice!
I am going to praise camman 18 audience and chastise the pheonix sc audience depending on their score of protest
MY GOAT SHRIMPSNAIL'S GETTING FEATURED IN EVERY VIDEO🔥
relating to movement, i really hope mojang decides to add crawling with a keybind one day.
i can't believe it, mojang actually listened to the community and they even brought back sword blocking for those who want it.
i do hope we get the ability to make our own items using these components that have their own distinct ids.
Oh that intro took me back in time. I love where the snapshots are taking us. But do they need to break my data packs every update. 😂
It was so over but now we are so back
EXTREMELY excited that Mojang is now re-adding removed features as an option!! Really great precedent!
I immediately thought of 1.8 combat when hearing about this, so.... there's a very, very good chance Mojang is also thinking about this :3
I'm hoping for arrows that place a torch. Maybe crossbow only to give it more use in caving and day to day use
Heck yeah! The revelation of 1.8.9 is back in full swing
I hope there’s a way to make blocking work for specific damage types, because I think it’d be nice if sword blocking worked for maybe melee attacks and not as effective for others, that way shields aren’t entirely useless for those who want them
shields would be direct upgrades to sword blocking bc the latter never had full damage protection
Tbh, I almost don't remember sword blocking at all... For some weird reason I actually do remember moments when I thought "hmmm wasn't sword blocking a thing some day?", but then continued to think that I just remembered incorrectly... Funny to see this was actually a thing.
I love this snapshot so much omg
I never in any way expected them to bring back the "Block hitting" mechanic but hwre we are
We have our friendly signal back(besides sneaking lol)
Texture packs for enchantments are a huge change
Xisuma is awesome
2:52 that just sounds like the underground war
Finaly they reverted the movement changes. Sword blocking will be usefull for viaversion.
I always wonder if the developers watch you guys too, especially these reviews from trusted creators, which usually provide good immediate feedback for them.
SWORD BLOCKING IS BACK?!?!?!?!
