- serbianx presents ... "Stay with Me" (often credited as "Stay with Me Baby") is a song co-written by Jerry Ragovoy and George David Weiss. It was first recorded in 1966 by Lorraine Ellison. "Stay With Me" has been covered by numerous musicians. These include The Walker Brothers, David Essex, Ruby Turner, Rebecca Wheatley, Janis Joplin, Genya Ravan, Terry Reid, Sharon Tandy and Les Fleur de Lys, Natalie Cole, Jimmy Witherspoon, Kiki Dee, Shirley Brown, Whitesnake, Bette Midler, and more recently Duffy. Duffy's version was the only newly recorded song on the soundtrack of the 2009 UK comedy film The Boat That Rocked, even though it was the original version that appeared in the film.

Duffy sings with so much passion, soul, emotion and feeling, her voice is like an orchestral play! This has always been one of my very, very favourite songs and I didnt believe Lorraine Ellisons version could be bettered...I was wrong. Duffys loss to the world of music was truly tragic just as she was set to have an amazing career before falling foul of a scumbag who abducted and abused her. I believe this remarkable young lady is looking to resume her career and I look forward to her new work.

I am a 58 year old woman, with a indominable love of music, in general; and in R&B in particular. I have listened to all of these versions of this R&B song. I am a flat -out child of the 60's, and Janis Joplin was THE Blues Mama. Janis is a Legend, Lorraine Ellison's soul is grand, however, excepting Janis' version, Duffy does a superb rendition of this song. It totally arrested me. Give THIS woman her due. Each era produces it's own preferences. Isn't that good enough?

I think Duffy does a beautiful cover of it. A fresh voice always brings a new life to a song - it doesn't take away from the artists who've done it before. I wonder who Duffy heard sing it before she ever performed it, hmm? Don't you think she had to have loved that version a little to give it a try? She's not usually one for cover songs from what I've seen.
