    I thought 10 bit would be great, even though I make videos for a hobby. The files wouldn’t play in Windows, and Davinci rejected them without converting to ProRes I got way in over my head worrying about something that doesn’t matter in my situation. I’m trying to focus on storytelling now, instead of technical stuff.

    Such a great video and really puts priorities into perspective, really well said! Even backed it up with proof from Hollywood films! I’ve been struggling with this decision to buy an external recorder with the Nikon Z6, which ends up costing $1100 with all the accessories you need to even power the system (ssd’s, batteries, cables, card readers etc) it really turns into a bottomless pit of money (crushes my budget as well), and for me it just begs the question... when does it stop? Seems like there’s always new technology that comes out and we have people advocating for this new tech saying you “need” xyz products to shoot this and that... really just comes down to skill and your own story telling abilities, you made a great point about clients not even looking for or complaining about these “issues” especially when regarding banding, RUclips compression is horrible anyways so unless your clients are viewing on optimal monitors on the highest quality platforms, these “issues” we face really just make no difference with the delivery of the video... cheers!

      That camera is so dope! I switched over from a canon 5d markii to a6300 when it came out and it had everything! Eye autofocus, focus peeking, exposure zebras, aspect guide frames etc. It's been really good to me but it finally began to giving me problems so its time I upgrade. I'm looking at the a7iii now that its a bit cheaper.

    I hear that all the time 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I was considering making an edited video with 8 and 10 bit in it to test it on RUclips as I suspect it doen't matter when uploadign to YT and it's re-encoded. I have a GH5 which does 10 bit and a A6500, ZV-1, and A7RIVa which are all 8 bit.

    If some people made as much effort with their content as they did spouting about which gear is best, we'd all be shitting Michael Bay style videos. The "Shot on iPhone" videos that do the rounds back up your comments that if it's shot well and has a compelling story, nobody is going to care if it's any bits at all.

Our colourist couldn't give two shits which one it is, 8bit, 10bit, 12, 16... because the footage is always coming from people who know what they're doing. The Grand Tour is shot almost entirely in 8bit as was Top Gear.

      RUclipsrs honestly are kinda destroying the film market to me with just gimmicky bs man and making people buy shit they recommend because they are sponsored by these brands. Prime example. Pro res raw is the new over hyped thing in the RUclips world and it's just pointless. You can change white balance which is like the biggest advantage to raw. I mean youtubers are just idk. Dumb

      @@Brookssmedia yea, they hear people doing this professionally talking about stuff, think they need it and tell everyone that they must have it. Then, they can get their kickbacks. When we do tv doco stuff, it's ALWAYS in 8bit and natural picture profiles, never flat. Of course, youtubers say that everything must be flat, then just increase saturation and contrast. It looks horrendous. These aren't minor youtubers either.

    There are other considerations that are more important when choosing a camera.
    Dynamic range is certainly one of them. I've been bitten by that one more than a few times. It's not such a big deal if you shoot in a studio where you can control the lighting, but shooting outdoors like I usually do is more challenging.
    Assist features are also important so you don't have to carry a monitor all the time just to check your exposure. My camera of choice unfortunately doesn't even have zebras, let alone waveforms or vector scopes. So, I should bring my monitor along all the time, but the reality is, I don't because it's just one more thing to carry around and hook up.
    Does that just mean I'm lazy when it comes to videography? Yes. Yes it does. But it's only a hobby for me, not a job.

      I agree, I use my eyes, my camera's histogram l, and my knowledge of proper lighting ( be it ambient or otherwise)and proper exposure. If you know your cameras strengths and weaknesses, and how to compensate i.e. ND filters, proper iso and shutter speed setting. You'll do just fine..

      @@Brookssmedia Ha! I'm fairly new to the filmmaking genre, but as a photographer I've learned a ton more from the filmmaking world than I have the photography world. What I find particularly intriguing about the world of filmmaking is the Stockholm-like syndrome people have with their manufacturing overlords. I thought photography equipment was overpriced... It doesn't take a PhD in economics to understand why the prices are what they are -- and it's not necessarily manufacturing nor r&d (it's a fucking tripod head, not a Space X navigation system). I have a theory that the fast-food approach of Netflix will end up devaluing the price of Arri cameras, tho. Oh god, I've been locked up too long.

    • @Brookssmedia
      @Brookssmedia 3 года назад

      David your perspective is just fucking spot on man. Like seriously 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 you are someone I would watch. That manufacturing overlords comment is hilarious. And think about it that approach is already happening. Arri cameras still have their "specific characteristics " but overall image quality which for the most part is subjective is really close to mirrorless cameras especially being able to shoot raw. To be honest we make videos about which camera is best and here and there but honestly any camera that shoots 4k24 and if you don't have an AC to pull focus you'll need great afc but that's about it. That's why the blackmagic cameras are so amazing. But for one man bands like myself afc is a MUST!!

    • @Dstonephoto
      @Dstonephoto 3 года назад

      @@Brookssmedia Totally get all of that. Just re-read my comment... LOL, such an angry undertone. I think ARRI cameras lend themselves to beautiful imagery, and BM gives them a great run for their money. At the very least they've significantly lowered the bar to entry. Time is money and a major creativity killer as well. Hopefully technology will solve the autofocus problem using SONAR/LIDAR or some other form of range finding. I have so many questions about this industry. Like why isn't anyone looking at GFX cameras for video, etc... Have a good one!

    Absolutely! If you get it right in cam, as trying to fix it in post, 8 bit works fine. This is why I'm not going to updgrade to the GH5 (used), I currently have a GH4. I'm going to switch system and move to Sony and buy an 8 bit A73 because I can't take the low light disability of the M43 anymore as well as the so poor AF of Panasonic.
