- On September 18, 2012 Gypsy Swing guitarist Joscho Stephan sat in with Colorado Jazz group Swing Je T'aime at the Rialto Theater in Loveland, Colorado. The resulting performance was one that left us speechless and in awe of the mastery displayed by not only Joscho, but also by the members of Swing Je T'aime. Enjoy their rendition of Luiz Bonfá's famous jazz standard, "Black Orpheus," the third song performed during their first set.

~ Joscho Stephan ~
Just 20 years old when he released his first CD on the highly regarded label Acoustic Music Records, his name was already known to insiders as a force to be reckoned with on the acoustic guitar. His debut was named CD of the month by the American magazine Guitar Player and critics waxed eloquent about this virtuoso young musician working in the swing tradition of Django Reinhardt. This authentic European jazz form with its charming mixture of joyous enthusiasm and relaxed coolness offers the ideal platform for Joscho Stephan's remarkable technical abilities. This fact is underlined by the high level of attention accorded to his CD releases.
~ Swing Je T'aime ~
With a refined sense of style, and a broad palate of experience and background, Swing Je T'aime is an upbeat jazz group from Colorado that redefines the common conception of jazz. Drawing influence from Brazilian beats, gypsy swing, pop ballads, jazz standards, and all genres far and wide, the coalesense of style and virtuosic technicality blends seamlessl into a musical experience that is unparalleled.
Joscho Stephan. What an amazing talent and what a great group musicians.
How could anyone give this a thumbs down? 31 people are miserable with life!! THIS WAS BEYOND PHENOMENAL
I think it’s the violinist to be honest.
@@paulsurbitonryan9632 Yup, also the bassists intonation is off.. Probably it's not even the violinist but the soundtech.. I just don't like his sound...
The violinist is very fine. There's nothing wrong with the arrangement either. The bassist and drummer are doing their job well, which is to provide a good rhythm w/o going nuts. RUclips doesn't provide high-quality sound b/c of bandwidth and storage constraints.
Nice arrangement, lovely violin.
Pathetic recording of an outstanding bass solo. When will the sound guys ever, ever learn?
what should the sound guy have done differently?
WTF! so glad dedicated musicians like this are around to share their gift.
support the arts.
Merci à tous ces musiciens, pour cette virtuosité musicale sur ce grand thème de black orpheus.
World class playing by world-class players. Einstein was not alone when it comes to genius; it's simply a matter of fields. This is breathtaking virtuosity.
Joscho Stephan monster player
Always love to listen to this Black Orpheus
These people are absolutely superb.
Das ist was die Leute sagen , außer halb unserem Land. Beyond the Scenery.
fantastic guitar playing - absolutely love it
Josco Rocks - well backed up by the band - excellence in the highest form
Wow! Joscho was at his best that Ive heard!
That was REALLY GOOD !!
Climbing inside your instrument with passionate dexterity, spirit & soul like the late Bill Evans & many others on display here & Black Orpheus (Bonfa' & Jobim) is a Rembrandt in & of itself
They are special kinds of guitars Gypsy Swing Guitarists like to use. They were originally designed by Selmer to be an alternative classical but the classical guys didn't like them and the gypsies did so now they are associated with Gypsy Swing. They generally have the classical headstocks, and the strings are kind of half classical half steel as they are silver wound like nylons, and have a springy feel but are technically steel.
2:55 is the first line of "Speak Softly Love (Theme from The Godfather)", interestingly enough. :) 4:17 He reference Tico Tico. A fine performance all around. I heard this piece played for the first time on the violin, and came for that. Joscho is on the list of must-hears as well.
well you should check out the version w itzhak perlman then
So beautiful
That classical sounds amazinggg.
Joscho Stephan=WIN!!!
Manha de Carnaval!
Wow. Loved listening to this. ❤️❤️❤️
show de bola!!!!! beautifullllllll
Beautifully played! 😀
Znowu fenomenalnie!!!
The great guys at Wildwood (they are the freakin' coolest) provided Joscho with that guitar which is a very nice Dupont D-hole, which are some of the nicest guitars made now, and Joscho plays it like no one else. It takes a lot of technique to coax that kind of sound out of even the nicest GJ guitars. You use super thick picks with an aggressive rest stroke. In the hands of Joscho, you are dead on - sounds amazingg. Check out the book "Gypsy Picking" by Michael Horowitz!
Класс! Bravo!
Just sublime I am in awe.
Ok I am a chatterbox and must have had some wine that night on my 1st comment, sorry. My father would love this violinist, as we shared great music always, he was a great fiddler as well. So once again, arrangement is beautiful, phrasing superb💖
violin is over-hovering. And has a shimmering soul.
That was great.
insane picking by joscho....damn....
Had me up and wiggling! (danza) ☺
Bravo!
G ood jam session😙
Guitar.Violin and Bass guitar are great
I always listen to it
I wonder if the violinist is Japanese
It's cool😆👍
Wow on that guitar solo 👏😊
Amazing.....
There isn't a single classical guitar in that video. Those are Selmer-Macaferri style guitars. Search for Gypsy Jazz or Django Reinhardt here on RUclips if you haven't already, wonderful music.
pretty damn good
Gostei. Gypsy Bossa!!!
Pretty surprised to see any negative comments, here. I think it was beautiful and impressive playing, all around. This is not easy stuff, and you guys sound great! Let the haters hate. That's often all they're good at. ;)
Can it get any better than this???
Where is the Aaron Walker guitar solo? I waited and waited . . .
I would have liked to see Robin Nolan and Joscho play together here.
As well, Joscho's solo should have come AFTER the bass solo.
To me these are excellent musicians - undoubtedly - but as i often do i wish they'd stay more to the "original" (Manha de Carnaval). i realize there are many arrangements and different versions of those arrangements and so on but i guess i would prefer such talented improvisation be applied to their own original work? There's always the delicate balance of art and ego - i'm not a hater, just a lover of the Muse. This is certainly entertaining but i wouldn't call it haunting, like the original. Manha is unforgettable to most and stays with one forever, likely the reason this group, like so many, had to have a go at it.
Yeah Yeah Yeah.
Man... time to woodshed it with my guitars...and still never be that good.
where did this phenomenon come from... or where was I...???
🇧🇷 Muito Bom 👏
VIRTUOSOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does the pitch of the violin sound off by a tiny amount?
❤
I wish Josh solo was slower, great player.
Meravigliosi
did anyone pick up Godfather theme and Tico Tico references in the guitar solo?
Some fiddle playing!!!!
Apropos of nothing: Joscho's the only guy with a full head of hair.
Who is that violinist
Il violino è l'unico strumento che può piangere.
曲芸 サーカス?
You are wonderful musicians, but you are number one abusers of any melody, the one you abused this time you’re number one in the world!
Congratulation, good luck !

I really do not enjoy when virtuosity overwhelms the general musicality and dominates music, especially with pieces that have a sensitive, touching or romantic vibe.
"Black Orpheus" did not need this kind of guitar show off, period.
joscjo doesn't usually try to show off as much as he does here. not enjoyable.
Joscho is a virtuoso but he is such a show off. It’s fun to see once or twice but then it’s not enjoyable anymore
Самое ужасное исполнение прекрасной мелодии. Эти ребята лишены всякого джазового чувства и играют как трактористы в советском ДК.
