Controversial for its time, The Catholics stars Trevor Howard in a powerhouse performance as the Abbot in charge of a remote Irish monastery in Mork, Eire. In defiance of an edict from Rome, the Abbot and his monks, elect to travel to the Irish mainland in order to celebrate the Mass in Latin. Refusing to bow down to Papal pressure and use English for their Mass, the monks of Mork soon become celebrated amongst orthodox Catholics and Eire turns into a place of international pilgrimage.
Alarmed by the Abbot’s populist move, Rome acts to quell the dissent when The Father General (Raf Vallone) sends his representative Father Kinsella (Martin Sheen) to force the Abbot to cease the Latin masses or be transferred to another position. When the two men argue against each other's religious beliefs and interpretations, the Abbot discovers that it is not just the teachings of his church that he has come to question, but the very basis of his own belief in God.
Staring: Trevor Howard, Martin Sheen, Raf Vallone, Michael Gambon & Cyril Cusack

I saw this when it was first broadcast nationwide in the Fall off 1974 on tv. Its true title is Catholics: A Fable. Every copy of it since that time has changed the title and I don't know why. Every copy has also eliminated the first scene that takes place in Rome at the headquarters of the Religious Order between the Superior General and Martin Sheen, his emissary to the monks in Ireland who continue offering the Latin Mass which goes entirely against the new ecumenical Church and its plans. It seems this copy has restored it back into place. This all takes place at a point in time after Vatican IV and before the year 2000. This was an electrifying and deeply insightful look into the new church post Vatican II versus the Faith and Worship of the Catholic Church of All Time. Look for it under other titles: The Conflict or Catholics.

For anyone brought up in the secure embrace of Holy Mother Church, encountering the ultimate crisis of faith (owning up to one's unexpressed doubts, portrayed so brilliantly by actor Trevor Howard) is unsettling to say the least. I was set out of kilter watching this movie, just as I was watching Bergman's horrific "Hour of the Wolf."

At the end of this splendid film the old Abbot, with tear-filled eyes, asks if the prayers of humanity are being heard.
This film asks the soul-searching questions that confront each of us--Do we humans just talk to ourselves when we pray? Is God listening? Does God even exist? Do we need to have FAITH in order to live in this world without going mad? Are there really miracles?
Do we humans need ritual like the Catholic Mass? Does ritual propel us into an altered state of consciousness that helps us connect with the spirit world?
Let us face it, the Latin Mass might as well have been recited in Greek and held little meaning for participants (that includes we altar boys). Should laypeople say their prayers in a language they understand?
What about the crippled people who had journeyed to Lourdes seeking a miracle? The Abbot, played by Trevor Howard, thought the poor wretches had been duped into praying for a miraculous cure that would never come.
Unquestioned tradition butts heads with the questioning mind of humanity. Trevor Howard and Martin Sheen give stellar performances in this excellent drama.
This wonderful film ends with a prayer.

That's what the missal is for. It is our responsibility to teach those that can't read so they, too, can follow in the Missal. I can't believe people still come up with these types of comments. Won't even comment on Lourdes. If you don't believe, there is no point to it. Bye.
