- This more of a "how to" style crabbing video (how I do it at least). It was a very crowded day on the bay, but we still ended up with good cooler full. Thanks for watching
That looks like a blast and good eats at the end. If I ever make my way out there I'd love to see it in person. Thanks for sharing.
I came to a conclusion on my own that you guys like to eat crab lol . You did have some competition out there and still did well. Realy nice video and till next time be well and stay safe.
"Nuthin' to do now but drink cold beer and wait!"
Dude, you are definitely living la vida bonita (the beautiful life!)
Thanks for checking it out...and most days are pretty good in my world :)
Hear that too. My cousin just opened a brewery called 7 Devils Brewery, right on the 101 In Coos Bay. If ya, stumble across it, let me know. Pretty neat old bldg. Peace
Cool video bud...so many vid's on here just make me hungry and these crabbing vid's are on the top of my leader board.!!!
great video. well put together
That's was great...I like how you gave an explanation of what you were using and how it was used...I always wondered how those round traps worked and kept the crabs in them...Lots of competition and you guys still did really well...Beer looked great as always and I bet the crabs tasted good...Great video, Take care, Gonzo...
We do like the crabs, and we freezer a bunch for crab cakes. Someday I will get around to do some food videos. That's what I should be doing for videos, I'm a classically trained chef but the outdoor stuff is what I passionate about. I was thinking about starting a series called backyard eating, ....maybe someday. Take care until the next time
Thanks, if you are ever going to be in Oregon I would be happy to take you out. It's one of the few things fish and wildlife doesn't gouge out of staters on, a one day permit is around $10, not a bad deal for a dozen crabs. Have a good one!
Thanks, busy day but still caught enough to justify battling the crowds. I'm heading out again tomorrow, gluten for punishment I guess. Have a good one!
Thanks for watching, this was in Waldport, about a hour north of Coos Bay. I've been there several times, there's a killer camp ground at sunset beach. It's one of the few bays in Oregon I haven't crabbed in, but I hear people do quite well. Take care!
Thanks, I keep hoping that they're getting better. This was a bit of a challenge to film with all the ropes and floats out on the water. Take care!
Ya it was a zoo, I didn't get quite enough of all the yahoos so going again tomorrow. Thanks for watching
I should go more than I do, fresh crab and it's a real easy going outdoor activity, can't hardly beat it. Take care!
That's cool stuff. Thanks for the view all the way thru, very interesting. Yet another thing on my "to do" list. THANKS!!
Thanks and they are always great! All crab is awesome, but Dungeness is pretty amazing. Have a great weekend
Thanks, I might shoot another one tomorrow heading back out to battle the masses again. Thank care brother!
Thanks! It a good way to spend a morning, even when every other yahoo on earth is there to. Have a good one!
You got a good setup there. I don't think I could ever get sick of doing that. Looks great.
Thanks for checking it out,.....beer and crab, breakfast of champions. Take care BLT!
Fresh crabs & cold beer, what a way to end a great day on the water ..!!
Awesome video buddy, My Brother hank bes at the carbs two here in nfld he gos after the deep sea one they are big crabs buddy, that beautiful crabs you are getting buddy.......
thanks bud, I can't wait till summer to catch some more
Nice cooler of crab....bet they tasted great!!!!
You just gave me a reason to go back to Coos Bay! Take care
fresh crab, boating, beer equals a great time!
Very true! thanks for watching
backyardmeat y man
Busy day on the water, nice vid.
You helped me out before and I appreciate it. I have another crabbing question. How much rope do you put on your pots? and do you use weighted line? I will be going back to Alsea bay.
I have 50 feet on my traps, I don't use weighted line..... not that there's anything wrong with it besides the cost
Thanks for the vid. Any chance you can post a more detailed vid of how you "clean" and cook the crab please? Haven't been crabbing since I was 10 years old but have great memories of it and would love to get back into it once I learn as much as I can.
Thanks for checking it out, I have plans to do a stand alone video on several ways to clean them. I've struggled with wind noise in the past, but I just got a new camera and mic so hopefully I will have a detailed video up in the next few weeks.
I read your comment on how you're worried about what someone else may have used as bait as a reason for not eating the head fat and guts. If you ever decide on eating the "guts", then try it the way Koreans eat it.
Eating it hot right out of the steamer, if you put a little white rice, sesame oil, butter and mix it all together inside the shell, you get an awesome meal. Give it a shot!
:) I'm not anti guts, I wouldn't even think about it twice if they where ocean crabs. I've just seen some others using some really gnarly bait over the years
You are so lucky to have this resource! We can hardly get Dungeness in North Carolina. ( even frozen, my favorite crab)
They are pretty awesome, they are still my favorite by far!
Thanks for watching, have a good one!
Couldn't have said it better!
What is the ideal bait? I love in central California and chicken seems to work out. Not many dungeness out here though
Fish is the best, but we have to many seals and sea lions. I use almost all chicken, turkey is great too. I usually pick up couple turkeys this time of year when they are super cheep or free, I cut them up and freeze them for later.
OMG, I love these Crabs... Their meat is sooo sweet :)
It's always great and thanks for checking out some videos!
Nice hoist. How did you make it; materials. Is that 304 SS tubing? Looks like a stainless steel exhaust pipe fabricator can put that together. Let me know, I'm going to build one. Please.
just wondering, why do you guys break in half before cooking? just to clean it?
The main reason is that it's the fastest way to get them clean. Another reason is you really don't have to have water to clean them this way, which is great if there's no cleaning staition. You can hit them on the top of the shell and they stay whole, but you have the spray the guts out. Thanks for checking it out!
Nice! Hey man, ever been to Coos Bay? Bunch of fam.there. Have a good weekend!
Chuck
I live in Oregon as well! Where do you go crabbing? I go to Rockaway beach (:
I mostly crab in Newport and Waldport, but I haven't found any bays here that you can't catch them in....thanks for watching!
น่ากิน
great vid and of course LIKED it, but why do you rush thru the clean and cook part. Sure we have seen it before in other video but give us a little bit more. Thanks.
Nice..I just moved to Waldport, I have a crab licence I haven't gone crabbing yet, but I learned alot from you, your the crab man!!! Awesome!
Thanks for watching, if you ever have a question I would happy to help! Have a good one!
Thanks id love to go crabbing with your family sometime I love here in Waldport for now.
I only crab in Waldport Aug-Oct, if you still there next summer, I'll have to take you
Good stuff, and I'm just catching up with your posts. Are you guys east coast or west coast? I'm half-way thru, and those crablook like dungeoness. so I'm assuming west coast. anyway, keep up the fun posts.
Oh, never mind, just saw the tag line.
:) thanks for checking it out!
we only had three rings
I hope you went this year, they were bigger than ever!! FYI that is us next to you at 3:09 in the video.
I've been a few time and done well on 2 out of 3 of the trips. One of my buddies caught 60 yesterday in Newport. I have at least to more trips planned for Waldport this summer so I hope they stick around ......I guess you must be famous now after making a cameo in one of videos :) take care and happy fishing!
that is so cool I wish I could harvest crab to eat but I live in Oklahoma good video.
Not a lot of crabs in Oklahoma :) thanks for checking it out!
I love this video could you make more crabbing videos?
Thanks for watching, I do have 4 or 5 up on my channel but I'm planning more for this summer. If I can, I'm going do some more under water footage with my gopro. take care!
What's the sz. limit in Oregon for Dungies 5-7/8"?? Up here in Washington it's 6-1/4 in Puget Sound and 6" on the coast. I'm killing them right now up here but I can only keep 5 yes only 5 Dungeness Crab per day, what's Oregon's limit 12 a day?
It 5- 3/4 and 12 males per day, I just got out for the first time this year, a few days ago and we got 36.....I should have the video up of the trip later today.
backyardmeat Hey meat is Oregon crabbing open all-year around? In Wash. State we have a split-season, Summer(July-Sept.) then a Winter(Oct/Nov-Jan.) I might want to sell my house and move to Oregon if theres crabbing year around!!
Yep it's open all year, come on down :)
Looks like fun..nice keg pot u got there..
Thanks man! I love this pot, I have a full size one too, but the "pony" sits on the burner much better. have a good one!
Cool video !
Not enough room in the front of that boat. Get a different boat or push the hired help over board.
I take what ever crew I can get
What's the possession limit for Dungeness in Oregon?
You can catch 12 per person per day,....... with a 24 total per person crab possession limit (if you are crabbing over several days)
Good food cold beer, good dog. Life is good!
yeah
Are you guys recreational/sport or commercial? I crab fish recreationally in CA and was wondering if I need any thing more than a fishing license to crab fish from a boat. Also what were you saying about the high/low tides?
Thanks.
Just recreational, all you need is a over the counter shellfish permit. They are good for a year or you can buy a 3 day if you just visiting. On the tides, pick the day with the small difference between high and low and crab the high slack
Monroe Madison They are sweeter and have a lot meat per crab, in my opinion they are the best eating crab.....Side Note: I've never had fresh blue crab (only frozen), so I really not comparing apples to apples
Monroe Madison They eat the same soft, there's just very little meat in them, we can only keep males on the Dungeness so I'm not sure if there is a difference. Agreed on the hot dog eaters :),... If you're ever out west, try out the Dungeness, and buy them live. The ones at the stores are often frozen and thawed out
Great Vid,
Could you do one showing what you look for to place pots, How long you let them soak, Baiting, Time of year, where you get tide info and what to look for.
General stuff for someone wanting to get into it. The Beer part I know. :p
Thanks man, I have couple of videos planned showing where and why I crab were I do, with landmarks in each of the bays I crab in....general soak time for me is 15-30 minutes depending on how many I have out. late summer and fall are generally best or anytime fish are running. The tide table can be found on line by searching what ever bay you are going to. Here are the Oregon ones...take care!

backyardmeat Waiting for those Vids :)
Southern Oregon
IF you were to start from scratch, from your experience how you would build your economical Crab catching machine.
Boat, brand type, size, motor.
Traps , set up,
Fav Baits, chicken,......
Where to trap, Bays, depth, anything else to look for.
How to read tide charts what to look for, ideal conditions
Best crabbin beer, I have my ideas : )
Anything else for a rookie to get started.
thks for any help
ok...here you go.. Boat 14-16 (welded). 9.9 outboard or bigger.. Honda, merc or Yamaha, start with rings and a trap or two, chicken or turkey for bait at 10-14ft depth, crab the selves where it go from 25' to 12' of water. High slack is best, with pots in the water 2 hours prior to the tide, with as little swing as possible. Newport, coos, Florence are year round and Waldport killer from aug- oct. First bait in water always work regardless of tide....I don't always drink beer in the morning, but when I do it's miller lite
And the guts are the best in crabs
thanks for checking it out, I always worry a little about what other people are using for bait. If figure if they just ate someone else's road kill I might not want to eat that. :)
What does "a 24 total per person crab possession limit" mean?
What if you crab and take your catch limit home every day? Just trying to understand the law.
How many traps can you use per person , is there a limit?
What are the best type traps for, non commercial. Rings, homemade, round, square, looks like you use some of each. Preferred brand?
Favorite dipping sauce?
Thanks!
It means if you go crabbing on Friday and then again on Saturday with out going home and get stopped on the way home you can only have 24 per person total. You can only catch 12 per day, that's the most important thing to know, the other sinereo never really happens. 3 traps per person. Rings are my favorite for space and speed. Round heavy duty traps are the best for preformance. I don't really have a brand that I use, But a good rule is, the more they cost the better they are.....dipping sauce,...just butter and homemade cocktail sauce. Have a good one, and if I wasn't clear shoot me a measage back
im from oregon a good place to go crabing is charelston
That's one of the few bays I haven't crab in yet....but it's on the list!
Cool video I always wondered how those traps worked.
you don't like crab butter?
You mean the half digested rotten bait they just ate from some other trap, no thanks.....I'd rather not be eating the road kill that a lot of other crabbers pots.
Awesome video. A couple of questions
Where do you purchase the traps? And are there advantages one shape/material over the other?
Last, how long do you keep the trap submerged?
Thanks for checking It out! The shape really doesn't matter, though seals and sea lions can't get into the traps. You can buy the traps at any coastal tackle shop or sporting good stores, they're also available online. I usually leave mine down for 20-30 minutes. Have a good one!
We were in Alsea Bay last week. We had an awesome time. Your video's and information was spot on. The people we tried to rent a boat from in Newport gave us bait, and the way to use the bait, would not work together. But the people we rented a boat from in Waldport were awesome. Thank You.
Scott Davis glad you had a good trip! I went to Waldport a week ago and we got 36. It should be good in Both bays for the next month+ have a good one!
Awesome video, I'm in Cali and are taking the family out to the pier with a couple of traps for the first time. Hope to catch a few. Thanks for the info.
I'm glad you like it, good luck!
I thinking I went there I user mink
+Cody Stowell it works great for bait
Never ate them. Ive had blue crab, as i live near the bay in Md. Ive had king crab, snow crab and, lobster. All have been awesome and tastey so far, so I gotta try these.
I can't recommend them enough, they are by far and way my favorite!
i really enjoy these kind of fresh catch video; it makes me want to have crabs for dinner. thanks for the educational film. Please keep it coming!
Thanks for watching, It's just about time to hit the bays again, have a good one!
How far out will you take that little boat?
I only run in the bay
i really recommend the big box traps on boats, you'll get a bigger on your pot haul per hour and major satisfaction!
I like how they fish, I don't care for how easily the the seals and sea loins can destroy them. If I use them I never use fish for bait. Thanks for checking it out!
I have a 12' aluminium fishing boat, do you think it will be alright to take it to Newport bay for this?
Mine's 14, but I crabbed all the same areas in 10.5 before this boat
How big is your boat? 14'?
Yep 14'
Most people dont clean there crab first and to me is disgusting, why cook the guts into the meat, good on you, I also cook them in ocean water keeps a lot of flavour in them, good catch guys!
Thanks for checking it out....I've never understood the " crab butter" idea, its just guts and what ever rotten bait the next guys was using ...and who what that cooked in. Atb to ya
What kind of Bait do u use???
We use chicken, fish works great too but the seals and sea loins can make mess of your traps and they don't eat chicken
Awesome video! I always do well there, and up on nahalem!!
Man I What'a go now!! Lol.
Thanks, it's a great spot!.....it sure is nice the days that aren't as crowded as this one was
You know what I want to know? Who was the first guy who looked at a crab and said to himself "I bet there's good eatin' there."
Some guy who was probably really hungry...and got lucky
That looked like an online tide page. Please, where did you find that? Thank you for sharing.
Zanzara2041 thanks for checking it out! RUclips doesn't allow you to add a link in a message .....just take out the spaces
oregonstate. edu/ weather/ tides/ tides. html
Thanks, for the suggestion of where to look, and for the video. Love the crab cooking pot--we were debating just how you cut out the top since it was so nicely done? If you don't mind our asking...?
I had a buddy that works for a metal fab place cut it out. He just used a cutting torch and buffed out the cut lines. If I was going to do it, I would make the the hole with a jig saw with a metal cutting blade, but the torch sure make nice clean lines.
So we speculated. Thanks. Good crabbing to ya'.
nice video. I am coming out to the coast late july of 2014. Will be in the bayou show. Any pointers or tips would be helpful.
What bay? I've crabbed a lot of the bays in Oregon, I might be able to give you some land marks to set gear.... But a couple of tips, if you're in a boat, crab the edge of the channel in about 15-20 feet of water. Chicken or turkey will keep the seals and sea lions out of your traps. regardless of the tide the 1st pots in the water in morning usually are the best, if you can beat the rest of the yahoos out. If you can, pick a day with as little swing in the tide and crab the high slack. Mid week is always better than the weekend (less crabbers). If you drop pots and catch a lot of seaweed, move them it's a mess and usually not very many crabs. Hope this helps, and you're going to be going when the crabbing is good so that should help. Good luck!
backyardmeat Alsea Bay.
Scott Davis We will be in Waldport. Renting a boat and pots. Any advice would be helpful. Thank You
I wish the weather had been better the day I filmed this and you could have had a better idea of where to go. They're are three main spots in Waldport, strait across from the marina on the far side of the bay out to the bridge. The next spot is passed the bridge along the right side ( going out) just off the houses. The best area is from the jaws in along the hwy 101. One tip on rental rings, when you fist drop them hang on to the end until its on the bottom, in my option they never put enough rope on them....I think they like to keep the deposit
I watch you clean the crab then cook them. Is there a benefit or a flavor difference, to cooking them whole? Hopefully I will be successful and can use your knowledge in this. lol
So i fish and dive in Northern CA but never done the crabbing thing before,,, how far and how deep do you find these things? I have seen guys do it from Piers, Kayaks, and i have also seen like the big commercial boats way the hell out at horizon level. Anything particular you're looking for when setting a pot?
Awesome video as usual man. Its doing a excellent job of making me hate California that much more haha
I like 15-20 feet of water and I try to find a "shelf" or flat spot just off the channel. You can get sea floor maps of what ever bay your in too. You can also go out on a super low tide and look for all the spots that looks like tide pools, that were the stuff settles and on a high tide that's where the crabs hang
backyardmeat Awesome man. Thank you for sharing. Would love to give this a try someday. That and the Razor clamming you Oregon guys do looks like a blast as well.
God bless man. You're channel has become one of my favorites to watch. Keep up the great work and living the dream.
*i live in central cal
...:)
Ship me some!!
+dus “dustoin1386” one of the true treasures of the sea for sure!
Nice video!!
ThaOlBoy thanks for watching!
Why didn't you just boil them before cracking them? They lose a lot of sweetness when you do that.
I clean them first because I crab in the bay and see what other people use for bait.....road kill, rotten chicken etc,. So I don't want to cook that into my crab, I'll pass on the sweetness to miss out on the raccoon flavor
Just wash the outside of the crab.. My family fish their whole life. We have never heard of people using road kill or rotten chicken. Fresh bait is best
I agree, but I can't make others use fresh bait and the crabs go from trap to trap
....and yes, I have seen people using road kill
+backyardmeat Well crabs do eat dead animald anyways lol If you have a problem with "raccoon" flavor then crabs arent for you lol.
Awesome
Thanks for checking it out!
Great video! Wish I was on the West Coast!
Thanks, it's hard to beat a good haul of Dungeness crabs!
EPIC.
thanks
So fun! I want to do the derby. lol
It's always great to be on the water!
Where in Oregon? Nice video.
Newport
another day another beer
Cheers!
Where is this at?
Waldport Oregon
Okay thanks I was just wondering
No prob!
Looks so good!
Hard to beat a cooler full of crabs!
Cute dog 😄
Blue Crabs tastes better, but usually smaller.
Bruce Truong I might have to disagree on which tastes better :) but all crab is pretty awesome. Thanks for watching!
Ur dead wrong... Just cuz your from the south doesn't make blue crab better. The three top crabs are Dungeness, king and snow crab. Blue crabs are no where even close.
They're better cause they're sweeter in taste,,,not because they're bigger,,
