Excellent upload. Sopel is a great example of journalism in a free society. Journalists are routinely jailed in ...pick an autocracy. We are indeed fortunate we can comment here and not expect a rap on the front door early one morning.
I watched the bbc for a long time but it was a bit awkward when he mentioned about cnn being extreme while I know for a fact that the bbc has thrown out some crap
Jon Sopel, notwithstanding his excellent analyses about free speech, trips over the very idea when he tries to make a case for free speech and at the same time subtly hints at some regulation of some kind over what could be classified as “hate speech”. It’s precisely at such moments that the line gets blurred and one doesn’t know who or what one’s siding with.
If one were to extrapolate what Jon Sopel has enunciated, how would he view Salman Rushdie’s “Satanic Verses”? I do recall John Le Carré denouncing Rushdie in a fierce battle of wits and ideas, and saying more or less the things that Sopel has spoken of, in this interview.
Interesting interview, although he doesn't really say where he's going - had to look it up! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Sopel?wprov=sfla1 Looks like he's moving onto LBC. Wish him every good fortune, but think he'll spend his time doing this: LBC + 3 = BBC. 😏
