Who lives in any of these cities?

    • @larsedik

I live in Los Angeles on the fashionable West Side near the beach, and I also have a house in Palm Springs. I guess that according to you, I must be wealthy, but I never thought of myself that way. However, we did buy a house in 2009 when the market was down, and now it is worth more than twice what we paid for it. One good thing - because of the mild weather, utilities are very low because we need almost no heating and very little A/C. I do not own winter clothes and wear shorts most of the year. I am also retired, and that makes it even better, as I can avoid driving in traffic.

Brentwood, Tennessee (just south of Nashville) has housing costs that are 58% above the national average. Cost of living is lower than the national average so I guess it makes up for it. I don't understand why it is so expensive to buy a home here.

Houses in the Marble Hill, Manhattan neighborhood are pretty affordable for NYC standards. The only problem is that it's now located in the Bronx thanks to the Harlem Canal making it an island and then eventually landfill physically attaching it the Bronx.

Well when it comes to places like NYC. Remember, if many people want to live in NYC, a city with limited space. Then the prices will go up because of the demand. This is absolutely logical. If you do not have a sufficient education to buy yourself a good apartment then move to a smaller city.

Tons of hiking, camping, swimming, boating, etc. Tahoe, Yosemite and the rest of the Sierra's not too far either. AMAZING job market with probably the highest wages in America (along with the rest of the Bay) .... San Jose is on the up-tick and I don't see it slowing down any time soon.

First I’m a Miami dolphins fan, second I love mild winters, I adore the mix of cultures from the Caribbean, central and Latin America, and being in FL no income tax(yes I know other aspects of of cost of living will play a role). If I were making the income to live decently in Miami, out of the cities listed this would be the one I would do.

I grew up in Los Angeles (just North of it) and still have family there so visit at least twice a year. You mentioned celebrities you need to define that. Do you run into A listers often, nope but I have, but you do run into TV sitcom celebs (2 went to my high school when i went many years ago), newscasters, and lesser known actors, and reality stars quite a bit. Here a couple of my experiences. A long time ago i went to see a movie in Westwood and Mimi Rogers sat next to me and Tom Cruise next to her. Another time about 5 years ago family picked me up at airport and on way home we ate at Jerry’s Famous Deli and Matthew Broderick was seated in booth next to us. There are some certain higher end but casual/low key delis and seafood markets that if you go to on a regular basis you will definitely see celebrities, sometimes more than one and of course you will see in the airport and the nicer shopping malls.

Total tax burden in MA is 20th. It's really not as high as most people think. Boston is absolutely ridiculous. Lived there for a few years. It's one of the nicer big cities, but the expense was brutal.

Our former run down 1,200 square foot shot gun shack 🏚️ rental from 1966 in the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles, California is supposedly $1M+ We bought a 4 year old 5,000+ square foot home in Ohio for well below $800k.
But yes, weather sucks here 🌧️ ❄️ ⛄️

Maybe I'm being dumb, but I don't get these % above the national average prices for housing. How is Seattle over 200% the national average but Aspen only 160% when their average housing costs 3x that in Seattle?? Are these housing costs adjusted for the average income in each city?

Ugh...San Diego. I was born and live in Oceanside (NW San Diego County) pretty much all my life. I hate it here, mostly because of the number of people. I want to move....but it's taking a while to save because of the cost.

  • @phunkymonkiee

In some of these cities, youre basically paying a shit ton for a home that would cost you a fraction of that in most cities. At that point, "the rich" or whichever exclusive club theyre a part of, is just paying a premium to be around people like them.

I live in the SF Bay Area and the 408% figure just made me laugh and laugh. I guess when it is too painful you do that. Been here since 1969 and the last time it was considered reasonable prices was in the mid 1980’s. It just gets crazier and crazier. At this point it’s just a sick game to tell people how much it costs to buy a home in another city.
