yes sir very excited for El Legend, MANY have requested him :))) Great questions, I LOVE them: Moeller whip - The technique uses a specific "whipping motion", that uses gravity and a dual-fulcrum motion to do the work, allowing the drummer to play faster, and louder, by staying relaxed. It has been promoted as requiring significantly less effort and carrying less risk of injury than other methods. Ghost notes - Musical notes that have a rhythmic value but no discernible pitch. They are often played quietly and quickly, and are described as being felt rather than heard. Ghost notes are used to add texture and rhythm to music, and are commonly used in jazz. thank you for the rec for Danney Carey, added that drum cam vid to my list!
Mario actually started as a jazz drummer, he was even studying at jazz school for 7 years as a kid/teenager. Then he, and his brother Joe Duplantier (they play in Gojira together, Joe is a lead singer and guitarist) discovered metal by Metallica, Black Sabbath and other legendary bands and they switched more to metal, then as late teenagers started Godzilla, later renamed as Gojira. You can actually hear a lot of jazz influence in his playing, theres a lot of odd time signature patterns, very jazz way of playing around with accents during fills, shit ton of tasty ghost notes. Very original and distinctive music, no other band sounds like Gojira and no other drummer plays like Mario. Gojira is also one of the best live bands I know of, you can check out The Gift of Guilt live at Brixton Academy, flawless performance by whole band (including sick drumming by Mario, as always)
holy smokes that is insane that you know so much lore about Mario, I appreciate this comment so much!! Added that Brixton show and one more drum cam vid of Mario to my reaction list!!!!
@@DrumRoast Yeah, as a drummer myself he is a true inspiration. Not only insanely talented, original and creative but also one of the most humble and hard working musicians ive ever seen, as a routine he does 3-4 hours of practice every single day with 1 hour of constant non stop double bass at 180-220bpm. And that hard work pays of cause he basically never makes any mistakes live, he is incredibly tight and accurate. Looking forward for more Mario on your channel! Another awesome and incredibly original drummer is Brann Dailor (funnily enough, his band Mastodon are best friends with Gojira and they tour together all the time, also Brann has a jazz background too), his playthrough of The Last Baron is mindblowing
The song is "the art of dying" from the same band try "into the storm", "esoteric surgery", "the gift of guilt" or "the heaviest matter of the universe" for crazy drum patterns, and "Born in winter" or "Low lands" for beautifull dynamics variations / ghost notes stuff
@@DrumRoast Superfan ? Maybe... lol. Their whole discography is amazing, depending of what youre searching for. It's always a pleasure for me to share about music ;)
One of my favourite drumming videos on RUclips is the video of Luke Holland (a great drummer) playing Mikasa simultaneously with Sam Applebaum (the actual drummer from Veil of Maya). It is so fun to watch. It could be enjoyable for you to watch and react to, too.
man I am slowly getting deeper into the hole of intense metal drumming...I knew at some point someone would've recommended Chris Turner...added to my list, man I am legit excited...thank you for enabling me Nathanael!!!
