Helicopter pad on that ship. . . Hate to think what helicopters would be like in this game. Probably armed to the teeth and good for Mach 1.2
When I was new to this game I only knew Flamu. And then I sank a player named Flambass and I thought for a moment he was Flamu that's why I remembered him.

"based on bloody what are these things turned there" , i'm pretty sure the answer is the exhaust funnels point in the opposite direction of where the guns (and hence rangefinders) are pointing, up to a maximum of x degrees (looks to be about 45?) from the ship's bearing of 180. the idea being to eject the smoke in a direction away from them. there seems to be a limit (again not sure) so that they don't turn all way way around and try to eject exhaust into the direction of travel.
Decided to play a game in my mid-tier MM T6 Fuso last night, Flammy . . . Went to a weak flank just to help out 2 other ships (C & DD) - the other 9 went to the other side, lemming style. They both died but I still managed to kill 1 & cap - a few minutes later as I was heading to the centre cap, the next thing I heard was: "You Are Our Last Hope!" . . . The other 9 were also dead - and there were still 10 enemy ships left . . . needless to say my chances of winning at all on just 1/4 health remaining by then was highly improbable - and then, the focus firing from maybe 8 of them came in, and I was on my way to the bottom to shake hands with Davy Jones . . . And strangely, I still ended up top on our sides board.
Sometimes it happens.

I don't play subs, but can't you just use homing torps without pinging the target ship, the same as unguided torps if you need to? Like any old DD torps, you know.
i mean you have almost all the advantage with the sub, how do you fuck that up? and he had time to plan accordingly

Why are all these sub players so bad? Don't they understand the concept to stay at range and spot? Or hell just simply not use pings at such close proximity? Why no one bullies these last surviving BBs with non-guided torps? Honestly seems dumb to me. Even without pings you do damage, decent damage are you not? And with the recent change that torps need a minimum arming distance, you would think staying at range would be a must have...

You can't say it's the U4501 nor the Halland's fault. OK, they did weird moves, but clearly they were potent allies. It's a survivor bias, you better question the U2501 with 200 base exp or the Daring with 300.

Your sub should have ran and hid. This proves sub commanders are the worst WoWS players. They have no game understanding of the mechanics.

Things on top rotating are optical Range Finders. They are on top of the construction to optimize their performance: finding the range. Together other (optical) instruments for the bearing, temperature instruments, air pressure instruments, etc all data is feeded into a mechanical computer to “calculate” the ballistic curve of the AP/HE granate. Top secret stuff before even a electronic computers exists.

The rotating items you are referring to -- not the rotating funnel -- are actually called gun directors, and they are, for all intents and purposes the "sights" of the fire control system. They integrate everything: target bearing, course, speed, range (from optical and radar if available), etc. and send all that information to the (back in the day) analog/mechanical fire control computer, which would then calculate azimuth and elevation for the guns, or in more modern systems, actually aim them automatically. USS Kidd (DD museum ship in Baton Rouge) has a Mk 37 gun director high in the superstructure and five men had combat stations inside it. The gun director kind of looks like a turret itself and has optics and a radar antenna on top. Until I looked it up I had no idea that there were actual several crew stations INSIDE the gun director. The Mk 37 controlled both the 5-inch gun battery and the searchlights.
Flambass, on the thing turned there. Theoretically, it would be so that the smoke doesnt cover the rangefinders for the back turret. It's aimed to the opposite direction compared to the gun
